Beautiful band- the colors are fabulous.  And I love the name of your loom!

Artistry

Thanks rosearbor and thank you for your help. Glad you like the name:)

Going on a 2 day weaving retreat tomorrow and weds. With some weaving friends. Taking twirling girl, and tap. loom. not real excited about what's on the tap. loom, color excercise. However with a couple of days of concentrated work maybe I can turn it around. Beamed the AVL this a.m. For the baby blankets, I'm so late in doing these!

ReedGuy

I'm getting near the end of the heddles.

Be weaving table cloth this weekend hopefully. :) The threading is almost fool proof with the blocks and tabby warp every other between shaft 7 and 8. If I start a block on 8, I have to end on 8. Plus I end on a block color, never a tabby. So if I don't, then I know I have to trace the error right away. Tabby is all one color.

Have a good time Cathie.

Very aquatic looking- beautiful. The different colors make the whole pattern look very different than you first band.

It looks like everyone is being productive.  My dyed towels are fully warped and hopefully by this time tomorrow will be actual towels.  I have another 12" to go on my first tartan scarf.  Once it comes off the loom I get to thoroughly measure, analyze and decide what or if I need to modify anything before I put the next set on the loom.  I need to warp about 6 yards to make the necessary Christmas presents.  I'm moving in about 2 weeks, so that will throw a bump in the road, a major bump.  I'm actually thinking about renting a storage building to move my studio to temporarilly.  There are several weaving deadlines coming up and the move will be a major disruption.

ReedGuy

I got the heddles threaded yesterday morning and reed denting half them.

Doing 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 4, 3   28 epi  with 8 dent reed  Going quite quickly, but needed a break from standing.

Don't hire me to work on a processing line, standing all day in one spot would be the end of me. I'd rather stack wood all day. LOL :)

Love that design Sally! Got back from the retreat . Worked on the tapestry on my portable tap. loom and the tablet weaving. Not pleased with the tapestry color excercise, I choose colors with too much contrast for excercise to work. So, I'm not unweaving it, but going to just go forward with some new colors tomorrow. The retreat was a blast!

Well I am actually up and weaving.  The warp went from board to heddle with relatively few problems.. I rolled up on the back beam with warping sticks to keep the warp good and firm ( I recomend Liz gipsons "Slots and Holes" video for any newbie rigid heddlers out there!) my dark teal scarf is up and running. heres hopeing the next 10 of them go a bit more quickly. :) I'm not quite happy with the salvedges yet but that to shall come along or so I have been told.  I have never totaly finished a piece so this is going to be interesting.(wet finished that is ) I  I got to weave for almost an hour today ...making sure to ware my wrist support and a back support pad at my back.  I don't seem to be able to use a weaving type bench...but need good back support since i am weaving in a chair with my loom against our kitchen table. (thank goodness my hubby is a kind man and moves "his" side of the table to the other side...lol Till my next time ...heres to weaving with you gang!

endorph

so glad you are up and weaving - you will be amazed at how wet finishing can correct lots of selvedge problems! Ask me how I know. . . . your edges will get better with time and practice. I like the "Slots and Holes" video - but really love the Jane Patrick video and book! Good luck and welcome to weaving.

ReedGuy

I also think there is a free ebook from interweave on rigid heddle looms.

Artistry

Weavejoyforall, Congrats on getting to the weaving stage, now the fun begins! Tina is quite right selvedges improve with practice. Advance your warp every few inches, don't weave close to the reed. Lay your weft in at an angle, with the edge just touching the outer edge warp, beat/ place the weft in. consistency is often the name of the game, it will come. Have fun! Cathie

happening in my house at the moment. Well some planning - no execution. I have, however been knitting up a storm and spinning as well. So all is not lost!

Erica

Here you can see one of the spindles, I have 4 going (thank you Abby Franquemont), and the mystery fibre I'm spinning. The mystery fibre eas a gift years ago and neither of us can rememver what it is, but I think it is hemp. I've also been washing a fleece I bought in Gotland a few years ago.I have also been weaving on the herringbone bag strap and the samples for my commission of course. :)I love all the wonderful progress shared this month!

pammersw

Unwound the warp and retensioned it, cut off the extra, and rebeamed it with cardboard.  Paper really doesn't work on long warps! Then when I got back to the scarf in progress, there were still tight and loose threads. So I when ahead to a bit beyond where the end of this scarf's fringe will be, and cut, tensioned, and retied nearly all the ends. There were a few with too little slack to retie, so I twisted them on safety pins to increase the tension.  Wove 4 inches afterwards and it is much better now!

ReedGuy

Shipment of Harrisville yarn arrived today. Still a couple projects to get done first. Need to thread the rest of the reed and tie on for the table cloth. My eyes are getting heavy. :D

So far so good!  Thanks to all for help and support I am enjoying this !!Weaving on the loom

ReedGuy

Well I should begin weaving that table cloth today after I get the cords tied up to the harness. I'll soon see if it's fabulous or failure. LOL :D

Gotta get moving along, other 'stuff' to get woven. :)

Artistry

Started the samples for the baby blankets, ' bout time. The weft looks a little heavy, 10/2 pearl cotton warp, 8/2 super soft unmercerized cotton, fancy twill. However have a perfect shaped diamond in the pattern . Will try other wefts, maybe other setts too. Can't wait to wash, the real test!

I saw your post regarding the red overshot placemats. If these are still for sale, please email information at [email protected] We have red and white english china and live in a historic home and love overshot patterns. Teresa

ReedGuy

I also have a red and white pattern. Mine is Mason's (Ironstone) Vista. My uncle passed away last fall and he collected dishes for 40 years.

macontavern

Sally, I got your reply but I am not able to reply to your private message through the website since I am a new member. We would actually be using the towels as placemats. Could you measure them and let me know the dimensions of them so that I can see if they will work with our table. If they will work, I would like to discuss them further. I am interested in all 8 of them. We were looking for 12 but we can make 8 work and just add other solid ones when we need 12. Our zipcode is 23139. I assure you this is not a spam. We live in a historic tavern so our email is the name of the tavern. My email address is [email protected] Teresa

Yes, I will send you the details directly.

details on my prize of 1kg of cashmere from Colourmart all worked out. Now comes the wait for it to arrive at the house - arrrgh! I will be out of town all next week - and probably out of touch in here as well - so maybe when I get back I will have a package to greet me! I am also waiting on some fiber I ordered - it will be like an early Christmas for me. In the meantime I am knitting and unknitting, and graphing out patterns for my krabba / halvskrabba sampler. I think I will take the potholder loom on the trip with me so I can get some weaving done!

Erica

Oliver and I went to two Medieval Re-enactors markets this weekend. My sole acquisition was a distaff! Oliver is going to make me one as well, but this one was really cheap, so it will allow me to wait mor patiently for my swanky distaff. I have my blue faced leciester neatly wound onto the distaff, but decided to take a short break from spinning, so I can weave up a band to tie the fleece/fibre onto the distaff with. I thought I had some old tablet woven bands I could use, but the only old samples/bands I could find are not long enough. I had a lot of plain weave band left on my two harness table top loom, so I'm weaving that off for the new distaff band!

I also thought it might be nice if I hosted a Sample Weavo A Long. If you're interested hop on over to the discussion in the Chat! Forum and let me know what you think.

I brought my mighty wolf to a workshop 1 1/2 weeks ago -- probably a bad idea because of its size.  My girlfriend helped with her large car, but getting the loom back to my house has been a problem!

Nevertheless, the rug weaving workshop with Jason Collingwood was inspiring, though I realize I'm much more interested in using finer threads.  It did rekindle the urge to weave, and gave me a chance to get to know the great people at the local guild.

I will soon be moving and it will be so nice to not live out of a suitcase!  That said I finished my first tartan scarf.  Actually I should just call it a plaid inspired by the family (MacLachlan) Tartan.  I need to twist the fringe and such and then I'll be ready to photograph.  Thanks to some helpful folks I'm going to tie up my LeClerc Counterbalance and attempt a waffle weave on my BlazingShuttle warp.  I've wound a warp for a scarf which needs to be done next week.  Today I found out that my "new to me" 8H 10" Purrington Tabletop will be arriving on my doorstep in the next week - now to figure out what to try first.  I'm looking for a 8H sampler.  I need another loom like I need to gain 50 pounds (NOT!), but it is an 8H and following my move and some reorganization I will be getting an 8H Gilmore out of storage I thought it fitting that I have something to sample on!  I've woven on an 8H for a project one time so this will be a whole new experience.  I'm excited!

loomyladi (not verified)

but you have to work with what you have!  I dreamed of owning a Baby Wolf and then I was introduced to Purrington Looms and it was true love!  My little 4H/6T Purrington is 20" wide and only weighs about 40 pounds.  It folds to about 18" wide and fits in the back of my Subaru Outback with plenty of room to spare.  You can sometimes fines them used (see my note about acquiring a table top - yeah for me).   It's great that you had a great fiber time!

I've never heard of it -- but it sounds just perfect for workshops.  I will definitely keep my eyes open for one.

This past weekend, Sally and Band-it came for a visit to NYC.  Sally wanted some instruction on how to make dog collars out of some of her tablet and inkle woven bands, we planned a visit to the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, and we needed to stop on the way in the garment disctrict for dog collar hardware and commercial woven tapes for loops for her handwoven dishtowels.  Before we left my apartment, Sally said, "Sara Von T is in NYC this weekend, let's see if we can get together with her"  She PM-ed Sara thru Weavolution., and off we went.  WEEEELLLLL, Look who we found on 7th (Fashion) Avenue!!

At first we couldn't believe it was her!  Until we got closer...Sara closeup

Yep, that was Sara!!!  XO Gail, Sally & Fog

I've not been weaving as much this month because I have been writing a novel through Nanowrimo.org (national novel writing month). However,  one of my characters spins, and will teach two others how to do it. I'm not sure if she already knows how to weave, or if they find an old loom and try to figure it out by themselves. The latter would be a funnier chapter. :) However, I have gotten a little weaving done when I've needed a break or inspiration.

Weavejoyforall

I am very nearly done with the dark teal scarf I started first.(Christmas gift for my Sis-in-law Liz) Most likely will take it off the loom by this weekend.    Me Happy !!  Next a mans scarf for my brother Pete.  :)

To the NYC Travellers, You lucky Weavers! What fun to have met each other and to do so in NYC ! I can't stop grinning, what fun! Pammersw, A Novel, how cool is that? What genre do you think? Weavejoyforall, You saw it through, and no doubt learned a lot! Good for you! I've decided that I have just enough warp from my sampling ( which went well) to make a scarf for my tapestry teacher I'm going to see. So need to weave, weave, to get it done. Should be fast, but I want it perfect ! sigh, or as perfect as I can make it :)

and thanks for the close up of Sara's jacket! Beautiful. Hope you girls behaved yourselves!

Do you think someone who wears a lot of purple and dark blue, would wear, a soft yellow and brighter turquoise scarf, highly pattern, shiny? It's really pretty on the loom and I think it would look nice with purple ( blue violet most likely, she has blue eyes) . Ideas from other Fashionistias, or colorists? warp is pale yellow, I have Navy Blue and a purple that leans to the red, an apricot ( Matt ) then the turquoise. The turquoise. And yellow almost looks Indian , very shiny and intricate. Also, there are some areas of plain weave, in this weave, so their is that contrast between light and dark speckling between , let's say the yellow warp and navy blue weft, not too distracting, but is less with a medium value. No time to order new colors. Such a pickle! I should post a pic.

endorph

please post a pic - I am trying to imagine but having trouble doing so - sounds nice to me. . . .

pammersw

Probably it would be considered mainstream fiction. It's a contemporaneous sequel to my first novel, which I started 2 years ago. That one is halfway through the first rewrite. A third novel will also be contemporaneous,  introducing some new characters.  The fourth will bring them together, the fifth will be trouble in paradise,  and the sixth will split them apart again...I'm thinking.

Artistry

This is the front side. it is dangling from the front of my loom so looks a little crooked, sorry, and lots of tracking because of the denting. two different patterns but you get the drift of the colors. the next pic. is of the underside. I'm leaning towards that turqouise and yellow, for contrast with her clothing. But.......

backside of fabric

endorph

so I like them both but the turquoise is really nice. Beautiful patterns, btw

Wyoming tomorrow - going to drive up I35 and I135 to Salina, KS, across I70 to Denver, then up I25 to Buffalo and I90 to Sheridan - any suggestions of fibery places to look out for? I will be visiting Fiber House in Sheridan and Wild Purls in Billings but. . .  Not a lot of shopping time allowed in the trip but I do need breaks every so ofen! I am taking knitting and spinning with me and maybe the potholder loom for a change but. . . Looking forward to seeing family and a HS friend wants to meet and talk about towels and maybe getting me to make her some for her new house. Not sure when or if I will be on here for the next week or so. Weave on Everyone!

Artistry

Thanks Tina, yeah turquoise it is! Have a great trip!

ReedGuy

Looks very nice, Cathie.

I belong to another forum online, and we have an annual gathering in MI at the owners residence, where we roast a pig. Nice to meet other forumites. ;)

I want to do some 8 shaft overshot, the kicker is I need 10 treadles for these, to carry the tabby ground threads on the other two treadles. So I guess I'll have to make a couple treadles sometime soon. :)
