Another month come and gone. Welcome November - weave on!

It's still October here for another hour!

Artistry

Warped the Mirrix loom this a.m. , getting ready to do to the heddles , heading and will make the first entry today. Here's to early risers :) Happy November!

ReedGuy

I've actually been on my loom as early as 3 am. We have two more time zones here in Canada to the east of Maine. Eastern time zone is a wide span, from Maine to the other side of Ontario. Atlantic time is only about 200 miles wide at most. Then there's those Newfs with their own time. LOL :D

fibrefare

... to build up.  I'm getting rid of a project that is crap and salvaging the yarn for another go. I'm glad to be letting go and starting anew.  Happy November everyone.

Nice to see some early risers or later goers to bed! I am ready to muddle through the next 8 hours here at work then it is home to finish up the dish cloth / wash rag warp on the loom. I am hoping to get started warping for a halvskrabba sampler this weekend. Brought my spindle to work so I can get more spinning practice in. Cathie - can't wait to see what you are working on for this month's tapestry diary! Fibrefare - sometimes getting rid of a project that is going nowhere is the best thing to do. Glad you could salvage the yarn to another purpose.

sally orgren

This is a process shot, but Bandit is now tensioned and ready to weave!

I included a set-by-step photo essay of my warping method with this project post, in response to a question from another thread. I am still looking to improve my methods. This time I premeasured all my warps in advance, instead of pulling right from the package on the floor through the cards.

beautiful coat it is Sally. Bandit looks very handsome. I took a look at you project page - the pictures are great - I am till totally mystified by tablet weaving but this helped get a glimmer of understanding in my weary brain.

pammersw

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that my first thought was'oh, the cards go sideways! '

I had been having a real hard time visualizing how it all worked.  I might have to try this on my homemade inkle loom!

sally orgren

Using the loom to thread, the orientation of the tables is the same as your regular loom. But when weaving, yes, they DO go "sideways".

It's practically magical how the colors come up in rotation by turning the cards. Simple yes, and then maddenly NOT when you make a mistake, or the pattern shows up on the underside of the band. ;-)

Artistry

Sally, Bandit looks dashing as always! I'll be off to your project page, I'll be trying this soon and have been following the threads, it's intimidating but the designs are so awesome I have to learn how to do it! Fibrefare, We are in the same place! I just took off my large tapestry loom a project that has sat there for over a year and half. I was really attached to it but it had technical problems that really could not be fixed. So this week I took it off. You're right sometimes you just have to let go and move forward! Tina, My challenge this month for the TD is making a few colors look like a lot more. We'll see what happens:)

You summed it up Sally!  I've fallen down the rabbit hole with tablet weaving.  It is both simple and incredibly complex at the same time.  Flexible, but with constraints.  I liked your explanation of your warping.  I think I will try and do the same on my next project - take phots and document.

I just put a tablet weaving warp on my floor loom- I found weighting the warp with small weights has made a lot of difference too.  I hope to get some weaving done on that piece this weekend- pics to follow soon.

got e up way to early this morning. They want to go to the dog park - our normal Saturday morning activity - but it will be too dark for another hour or so. Tomorrow morning with the time change tonight will be better! So I am catching up here and on Rav and might wind a few quills so I can get right to weaving when we get home from the park and grocery. I'll worry about house work until later!

pammersw

I've been continuing to work on the Christmas scarves. The second one is about 15 minutes from being done, then we get out the drill to wind bobbins for the third one. :)

sally orgren

I create a weaving calendar each year for the guild sale and family/friends. This is the 7th year in production! It's fun to try and figure out new ways to photograph the same 'ol flat plane...

fibrefare

Sometimes I think it takes a couple of years in a new home to actually get the feel of it, and then I can get things where they belong. That is the bug that bit me and my DH today, so cleaning, organizing, and a trip to Lowe's for a new tool box.

ReedGuy

This winter's project will be a  French Fauteuil (foe-toy) style armchair. I will be weaving the upholstery in wool (Harrisville probably). They recomment about 16 epi, got the reed for that, but I'll likely use my 8 dent. This is a new area of wood working for me, so it will be slow and careful. Never made a chair before, never uphostered neither. I have carved curves and such in wood though. None-the-less, I'll be armed with some good books on both. I have a point twill I drafted up some time ago and posted on here, have to sample it. There are no exposed warp floats on the selveges of the draft. It will be in two shades of blue (navy, and a lighter blue) Different yarn makers like to use all kinds of names for the different shades. That's fine I guess. :) I still have work out in the woods to keep busy at until the white stuff comes. Plus quite a few projects that need to be weaved up. My curtains are on hold for now. I don't know if I want to use packing warp or not in the cord weave, if so, I'm going to have to install a second beam on my countermarch. Not a problem in itself, just need to be made is all.

Busy busy busy. :)

endorph

ReedGuy - will look forward to watching your progress.

Took out what I had woven on the tapestry dairy, sigh! I'm learning a new join double weave interlock but you do it with the front of the weaving facing you( traditionally it's done with the back facing you), I'm doing it this way so I can get this little ridge that forms vertically on the back of the piece. Well went down this a.m. To start work and saw that I had totally goofed up. So you know the rest of the story. Not a bad thing, I think I know how to do it now! Still going round and round about what to use for these baby blankets. I'm doing a fancy twill called hin Und weiber ( that's close) from handweaving.net. Highly patterned, no tabby. I think I'll use 10/2 UKI cotton for warp, because I have a ton of it and the color is pretty. But to soften it up, I think I'll use an unmercerized cotton8/2 Dragon Tales for weft. Haven't bought that yet or used Dragon Tales before. What do you think?

Artistry

ReedGuy, Your winter project sounds like a real challenge and fun too! I find drawing a chair hard, their are so many details, I can't imagine making one! Yeah the people who sit around and make up the color names, what a job:) The names are good for a laugh often times. Life would be much simpler if we all stuck to the numbering system .

La La

That is an impressive and really interesting project for the winter. I imagine it will be beautiful.. I was trying to get the nerve to make a simple upholstery piece for a Victorian Chair, but thought better of it, for now.... Just took a shawl off the loom and it is a disaster. I may just call it a loss, (or a learning experience) and sent it to File 13....

endorph

the dish cloth / wash rag warp off the MW on Sunday but have not gotten around to rewarping yet. I have been playing with my drop spindle instead. I might try getting a warp wound this evening - I only need 112 ends at about 3 yds long so it should not take much time at all. It is a linen warp and with all the rain we have had lately the humidity in the air should help with the warping!

Queezle

Travel and remodeling took their toll on my presence here, but yesterday I discovered that Jason Collingwood was to be here THIS weekend, and a cancellation meant a spot for me!  I am back!

Artistry

Wound the warp for the sample baby blankets. I'm doing 5 blankets, so going to try out all the patterns too. Worked on the TD too. Still have the TD to do for today, the interlocking is slow! And will sweep up the floor loom studio from the last project, So it's semi clean when I start to beam. I now have ALL my tapestry yarns sorted out in clears bins according to color! The bins are stacked and they're drawers. I also got lots of extra stacking drawers for tools, etc. life is so much easier plus it's delightful to open the drawer labeled let's say red and see ALL the choices!

ReedGuy

Yes, the chair will be quite a project. A chair is quite a challenge. None-the-less, I like to be in the wood shop in the winter as much as possible. This should last awhile, as I don't keep any kind of hours. Looking foreward to getting started.

Weave away. :)

sally orgren

Attached is the cover to my 2014 CD calendar. (And of course, there is a bonus month included.) This is like my "tapestry" diary for the year. But heck—you guys have seen the projects as they have developed through Weavolution!

(Pssst, I bet a calendar would be a great holiday gift for the monthly tapestry diary people to produce for weaver friends and family!)

Does hemming count as weaving? I have been hemming oodles of overshot placemats. I was highly concerned about one set of 8 red ones...would the red cotton bleed in the wash? Two of my guild mates have woven overshot with strong reds, only to have them bleed into the white areas when drying...

I held my breath and threw in a WHOLE BOX of color catcher sheets (24) just to be sure (3 per mat). Happily, the sheets only came out a very pale pink, and the placemats emerged from the dryer perfect!

I can't wait to be done with guild sale prep, and get back to weaving!

ReedGuy

Try Eucalan for washing. Or maybe Google it and see what others say.

Nice project photos for the calender. :)

the yarn I am spinning at the moment -

pammersw

Oh, that is a pretty fiber, lots of beautiful colors!

Artistry

Gorgeous Tina, do you have plans for it?

endorph

I might knit up a pair of fingerless mitts with this - depends on how it turns out once I get it all spun and plied.

pammersw

I admire people who have plans for their spinning.

My mom always asks what I'm going to do with it, when I'm spinning.  To her, it's not worthwhile to practice,  you have to be making something worthwhile.  I tell her I'm making yarn. ;) Drives her crazy! LOL

Queezle

is amazing!  That calendar is better than any in the stores!  Just lovely.

Fabulous calendar Sally!

sally orgren

I am actually hemming 18 of these overshot placemats. We completed a guild exchange a few years ago, weave one = receive one. When it was apparent no one was willing to finish this exchange set after two years, so I stepped in to complete the set for the other 7 members. As a result, I got to claim the set that was forfeited by the weaver who did not fulfill her obligation to the exchange.

As these are not "my" colors, that is why I am putting it in the sale. (Hopefully someone will see them as GREAT holiday placemats!) Meanwhile, I am now hemming my collection of 10 more in soft green.

I posted my comment in new weavers just now... Been.away too long to be on top of things. Here's my comment: Since I was on last my house has become a home. Living with my looms, and all, was a wonderful choice, but 2 looms have yet to get dressed. I have. A friend interested in using one. Potential student? Over the summer weaving has been a focus. Not so much steady weaving, but classes. I had a tapestry in line class at MAFA from Katherine Todd-Hooker, my guild had a class on honeycomb, I taught a tapestry class to my guild, & I took a nuno felting class from Jean Gaugher at EGLFC. Lots of project to finish. Joan

Artistry

Welcome Joan! isn't Kathe Todd-Hooker fantastic! I'm going out to Oregon to study with her in December. can't wait. Sounds like you enjoy all sorts of differents kinds of weaving. Yes, lots of projects to finish, me too, as well as those to start! Good to have you here!

rosearbor (not verified)

Well I'd buy those in a heartbeat!  Hope the sale goes well.

Artistry

The overshot is fabulous ! rosearbor is right, Those will get snatched up ! We're having ourGuild's big sale this weekend . I'll be helping on Saturday, should be really fun!

ReedGuy

Those are nice placemats and overshot patterns. Nothing wrong with the color. ;)

The weather is a little wet, and roads a little sloppy in the woods. So, looks like time to get that table cloth threaded is nigh.

Weavejoyforall

I want to Thank you all for your kind encouragement!  I'm not about to give up, really.  Tomarrow I will spend more time with my warping board... hopefully I will be a bit more successful in my efforts.  I had never had a warping board before this and its a little different but I do love working with yarn and it will come.  I know ! I was not aware that tention on the warping board was so important ( or lack of it , should I say) Learning is a fun activity for me a bit frustrating but fun. Again thanks for all your help.

sally orgren

Cathie, where in Ohio is your sale? Post photos, and I will do the same!

There are a lot of great holiday guild sales coming up - Albany has a big one, Boston, and Colorado, too. But they are a lot of work, and not my favorite kind of "weaving work" either.

On the flip side, it is fun to have a venue to sell where you don't have to produce a huge inventory solo. And having a chance to hang out with guild mates and see your work purchased, worn, and complimented on is a lot of fun & informative.

Hey, is anyone thinking about entering items at Convergence or Complex Weavers Seminars next year? The specs might be posted now, the (photographic) submissions usually due by Feb, and the exhibits will occur this summer in Tacoma, WA and Providence, RI.

I would LOVE to see some of the work posted here in person at one of those conferences!

Artistry

Sally, I live in Cincinnati , Ohio. So it's The Weaver's Guild of Greater Cincinnati's Fiber Arts Sale. It's THE major fund raiser for us, so many beautiful items. Fiber Enthusiasts, if you're anywhere near, come on over, you won't be sorry! Yes, I'll post photos, good deal!

sally orgren

Pretty good day at our sale today. Weather-wise, it was colder but sunny. There was a short line at the door when we opened and many of our regulars show up early to get the good stuff. It was steady traffic after that, not overwhelming. I think I nearly sold out of dishtowels. Laura Fry is right, if you hang them up (I put loops in them), they display better than folded flat on the table. And I think folks appreciate the better quality materials, like cottolin or finer cotton for towels (i.e. 16/2.)

Also, one of our members has really invested in nice display handware, and that makes such a HUGE difference in a professional-looking show.

Cathie, how goes it in Ohio?

P.S. The red overshot mats haven't sold YET.

Artistry

Hey Sally! I took pictures before people came in because I was working the sale. This was the dye scarf room, most of it silk, also jewelry, a treat for the eyes! We had a steady stream, it was good. The sale started yesterday and continues tomorrow.

Artistry

Actually, lol, this picture was taken after my shift ended. It's about 1/2 the display. I spent most of the time straightening scarves. But this looks pretty dishelveled. They were going like hot cakes!

Introducing Twirling Girl, my new to me tablet weaving loom! This is my first project. My own colors, the pattern comes from Card Weaving by Candace Crockett page 54. This is addictive! Many thanks to the Tablet weaving community on Weavo who have participated on threads, photo essays ( Sally!), where I gleaned enough info to warp my loom and thread my cards by myself, with a few bumps in the road:)

Looks like a handy gizmo for some gimp weaving. :)

I wove about 45 minutes last night, using up another 6 inch bobbin's worth of yarn. One more bobbin of the main color to go, then 4 inches of contrast,  and scarf 3, lime green and ivory,  will be done. I will then be halfway through the women's scarves warped on the loom. Still need to get warp for the men's scarves, so might do placemats next.
