Beginning Friday Oct 30 2009   It looks like we can squeeze in another beginner Weave A Long before the holidays! I'd like to invite Rigid Heddlers to join in a simple beginner project focusing on the scarf!   Scarves are a great project that be woven up quickly with a defined purpose. It's a good way to experiment with colors. It's also a perfect "stash busting" project to use up yarn you have laying around.   We'll discuss planning for scarves and how to warp up your loom the "right" way. (Instead of Franco's way!)   Please try to join the WAL!   Note: Our Weave A Long is not an exchange activity, you weave it, you keep it to do as you like. If you can't start exactly on the date, just jump in when you can. I hope by starting on a Friday we can use the weekend to warp up and get weaving through the following week or two.   Have a good day! Franco Rios Volunteer Enabler

I am signing up to watch-along rather than weave-along. I am backstrapping my 4th sash.

I always learn a lot from these things. Virag sent me some knitting yarn and I am looking for a use for it-a scarf could be just the thing.

Thanks Franco!

You are more than welcome to watch. I will be done with my fingerweaving sash project tonight or tomorrow. Then I will warp up the Cricket Rigid Heddle loom for a scarf with some acrylic yarn I've been wanting to use up.

Have a good day!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you don't mind, but I'm so tickled that I figured out the log cabin pattern.  It's from another WAL that I started last Spring, but was not able to get started on it until August.  It took forever to warp all the treads.  Started weaving and didn't do the first towel right, but the second towel is the real.......Log Cabin Pattern.  I'm so excited!

First try at the pattern

Great stuff! Isn't that "aha" moment so fantastic? It looks good. But so does the experimental bit too - it will have its use one day when you are looking for a bit of fabric that has to be just so.

Franco, sort of count me in! I'll jump up and down and encourage from the sidelines at least, but a scarf should be no problems, I have some very pretty (shhhhh! everyone) a c r y l i c yarn just begging to be used in a project like this.

Okay Caroline,

You are penciled in!

Have a good day!

Peg,

I love it!  You did a great job.  How about leading a Weave-along for log cabin.  People can choose to do a scarf or towels or whatever they want.  It's all about learning the weave structure.  Where did you get the directions?  Actually, log cabin is in the public domain.

You know what they say, see one, do one, teach one.  Give it a thought.  We have a two weave-alongs going at the same time before.

I am in!! I made 3 large dishtowels from the other beginner WAL and am ready to try something new!!

I have heard my empty loom calling out to me the last couple of days!

*Warp me!!! Warp Me!!!*

francorios (not verified)

Well Mary Beth,

You tell that loom "we hear you"

Have a good day!

I would like to join the scarf WAL using my "Cricket" loom. I have not done a weave along before and am looking forward to this one.

Franco, are you going to make us wait until friday to find out what we do, or will you give us a little teaser before then?

francorios (not verified)

I'm planning to weave scarves, 8 inch wide by 6 ft long. I'd like to warp up for at least two scarves (12 ft warp) if not 3 scarves (18 ft warp), but I'm not sure how much warp the Cricket Loom will hold.

We will learn to warp "the right way" and work on warp stripes as a design element with solid color warp or variegated.

Have a good day!

Will that be Rowena Hart's 'right way', Betty Linn Davenport's 'right way', or someone else's 'right way'?  Heh-heh.

I can honestly answer "Yes!"

Have a good day!

If I start by my front door and attach the warping peg to the back door, I might just manage an 18 ft length! so the Ashford direct warping method is out for long lengths - I will have to work out a compromise method that works for me and my size house. Until then, its back to the warping board.

Loominaria (not verified)

Maybe you could warp it outdoors with a peg clamped to a fence post or traffic sign.

I know...what would the neighbours think?

I was wondering what the traffic cop would think of yarn stretched across the road.

*&^%$#  what the neighbours think! Think what fun the nesting magpies would have chasing me off! Hehe! Never mind the cats swinging off it too! I think I shall stick to more traditional warping methods, my neighbourhood isn't ready for warped weavers.

For seriously long lengths might I suggest a combination of the "Right Way" and Peggy Osterkamp's method, whereby you use your warping board or mill to measure out your warp ,"kite sticks", and a raddle. You can see my colour gamp warp on kit sticks  here. You can also visit the Persistent Knitter blog to see the entire process. Or  vist Peggy's site and purchase her book or video! This method is awesome for any loom and especially great for very wide or long warps!

The biggest advantage of using kite stick and the raddle is that you don't need someone else to help you wind the wrap on, the kite sticks keep the tension for you. You can still use the rest of the other appraoches for your rigid heddle loom. I can see hwo the wapring peg would speed things up for short warp, but for long warps the kite sticks and raddle are the way to go for any loom!

Weave A Long starts today!

I took pictures last night but did not get a chance to post them.

I'll post the pictures tonight after I get back from work. That will be in about 12 hours from now.

Have a good day!
