HI I was wondering if anyone knows about Toika Jaana loom. I have been looking for a CM loom that will fit in my attic weaving room and this one seems to fit the bill. There seems to be very little info on this loom out there in internet world. I did down load the PDF for it (its in Finnish) I don't see any back brake release!  Can this be so?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

YOu'd need to get up to release the warp beam - which is not at all tragic. Most of the smaller looms are not really set up to releast the warp beam successfully from the bench - it usually jerks, lets off too much and makes it difficult to retension - the looms looks very nicely made as pictured. The Toika web site has a button for English.

You have to get up and go to the back of the loom when you want to advance the warp? Really? The loom really looked like what I was looking for but come on how hard is it to put a break release accessible from the bench. Some ot their other looms have a "worm rachet" type.  Wonder if this could be incorporated onto the Jaana. Every floor loom I have used, or seen has a rear brake release, and yes the ratchet type can be a bit jumpy but on my Macomber easily fixed with a spring and cord.

Guess I will save up for a Delta.

It is quite hard to put a release lever on a loom when the pawl has an angle that doesn't release easily. The smaller countermarche looms pretty much have this in common - the Lilla that we sell is the same way. The worm gear is for the larger models built by Toika. By categorically rejecting getting up to adjust tension, you are missing out on the fine tuning that comes from using both front and back tensioning devices to get just the tension you'd like - when the warp beam is full, one tooth on the wheel releases more warp than when it is empty. It is physics, and wanting a nice quality fabric that make what you are looking for in convenience not easily possible.

I was understanding that you have to get up and go to the back of the loom to advance the warp, is this correct. I am confussed because of your statement ”By categorically rejecting getting up to adjust tension.....

I do so want to love this loom.

Do note that this loom is much shorter than the other looms.  Webs might be able to tell you the breast beam height.  It is very low.  I am 5'2" and it was a bit short for me.  I have long legs, but it was short for most of the weavers in the class.

Joanne,

Are you referring perhaps to the Laila loom? That one is like a Wolf Pup with countermarche tieup and works for classes, but is quite tiny. The Jaana (admittedly it has been a while) that I once sat at was more on the size idea of the Ideal or Lilla - compact, but not all that small.

I had one of those in a class that I taught at John Campbell.  It is a nice small loom that easily fits into a car.  The Jaana loom was in a class I taught last fall and it is bigger and weaves wider.  If you look in the Toika catalog, it describes it as a small loom and yes, it is much shorter than their other looms.  It was too short for me and I am 5' 2+inches.
