Hi Y'all...

I'm a new Georgian -- as of last January.  We retired and moved to Savannah from Albany, NY and are lovin' it.  I must admit we did take the summer off -- and lived on our sailboat in upstate NY on Lake Champlain.  (I'm not much for hot, muggy weather.)

I quickly joined the Fiber Guild of the Savannahs that meets monthly (with an additional once a month Spin-In) and a-once-a-week informal knitting group at a local yarn shop, WIld Fibres.  (There are 2 new LYS in town - Unwind on Waters St. that also has a kntting group on Wed evening and another shop in Pooler called the Guild.)  I always find my fiber friends some of the greatest people!

I've been weaving for over 30 years and also spin and dye.  After selling my looms and equipment before we moved South, I am in the process of replenishing.  I found an 8 shaft Mighty Wolf and have already woven two 7 yard warps.  My plan was to use up some of the yarns I couldn't part with before I buy more, but I'm having trouble with that plan!!!  So many amazing fibers and yarns -- couldn't believe it when I saw yarn made from MILK!  So... I ordered some milk fiber to spin immediately!  So much for plans...

Some of my other passions:

the Bauhaus, a German art school which existed between WWI and WWII  -- I wrote a book on the Bauhaus weavers:  Woven: a Bauhaus Memoir  - more on my website:  www.suzanneworkhokanson.com

AND wabi sabi, the Japanese aesthetic  -- more on my blog: suzyhok.blogspot.com/  (unfortunately, I'm not as up to date as I'd like to be.)

I'm looking forward to finding more weavers in Savannah!

Suzy, I know you are not missing the weather in Albany this week, even though it is a little cold in GA this week. You can see what a fellow German has to say about weaving schools in Germany under chat with our discussion about Reinebeck, NY. It would like to invite any GA weaver or anyone passing through to come to our next weaving guild meeting on Sunday Oct 25 in Penfield, GA. If you need details IM me.

Michael

PS Did you get the list of SC Weaving groups I sent you?

 Hi Michael:

Thanks for the heads up about the Chat on Rhinebeck/German weaving schools.

Sorry... I didn't get the list of SC Weaving groups.

Sure wish you and your guild was closer.

 Hello,

I'm fairly new to Weavolution, am a member of the Tapestry Forum and now this.  I've been a "Georgia Weaver" for thirty-seven years (that's how long I've been weaving).  Hello, Michael--please give my regards to Cheryl--haven't seen you guys since the old Yonah Mt. Fiber Arts Guild days!

I'm in Dahlonega, work in my studio daily, teach occasionally (John Campbell Folk School class and Penland class both scheduled for 2010).

My website is http://web.me.com/tmscanlin

my blog is http://tapestry13.blogspot.com

I welcome anyone to come up and visit sometime!

Hi Tommye,

A lot of water under the bridge since we last saw you, 20 plus years ago. Cheryl is still weaving, I am still building and repairing looms. Cheryl has a 17 dish towel warp on one loom, in fact the lady that owns Geniune Georgia just called asking for more dish towels. Cheryl can not keep this shop stocked with dish towels. I am building two tables for the same lady to go in a guest bedroom at her house. I am also working on a new vanty for our bathroom. Cheryl and Susanna, the lady spinning on Cheryl's web site, www.handweaver.us are going to SAFF on Friday. This past year Cheryl has moved her studio into a double wide trailed and is filling it up with looms and yarn.  If I can get a loom freed up I am going to weave an overshot rug. To much to do and not enough time for everything.

Tommye do you miss teaching weaving at North Georgia College? It was good to heard from you, tell the rest of the Georgia weavers to come on over.

Michael

 Hi Michael,

Good to hear news about you two!  I'll be at SAFF on Friday afternoon, too--with my friend, Noel of Norsk Fjord Fiber.  Maybe I'll run into Cheryl.  Her friend may know of Noel's spinning--she teaches at the Folk School frequently, especially with dog hair spinning.

I'll check Cheryl's website to see what's up.  My last class at NGCSU was this past spring semester--may teach there again sometime, but there's a really good teacher working part-time now--Jo-Marie Karst.  I'm recommending Weavolution to her and the students.  Maybe they'll join in!

Take care... drop in if y'all are in the north of the state!

Tommye, I do not know. Susanna is coming here on Sunday for a guild meeting. I will give her your web/blog info and ask her your question. It looks like rain is in the forecast for  SAFF, maybe it will hold off. I read your blogs and looked at your web site. Your photographs and stories are superb and I could feel your throughts as I read them. Someday you will weave a tapestry of your father truck, it would be a work of love and I would guess very emotional for you. Your tapestries show your love of nature and all the colors there in. Do you dye your yarns to get the color your are looking for? Sometimes finding just the right color can be tricky. But when it all comes together it is personally satisfying.

Michael

 Hi Michael,

Yes, hoping rain will hold off for SAFF.  I visited Cheryl's site--what lovely things!  And, so many!!  Glad to know you're working on loom restoration for her--do you do that for others?  Occasionally, students and others who I know buy old looms and need help with restoration.

Thanks for taking a look at my blog & website and your very kind comments about them.  You really did go back in the blog to find Daddy's truck photos!  I still have hopes of one day attempting something from that old truck.  It's still there, sinking even more into nature than before.
