Wow, t hanks for posting about HM Nabavian.  Their price for 1/4 lb hanks of Paternayan is better than any I've seen.

Rob,

Yes, they are great.  I usually get the box within a day or two, their delivery time is wonderful.  I also like the australian yarn I get from Shannock looms but their delivery can be spotty.  My first order went astray but my second one came quite quickly.  Anyone know where else I can get this fine woolen yarn?

I also like Fine Fiber Press for tapestry wools. They have a 2-ply Norwegian tapestry wool, that they seel for $4.25 per 1 ounce cone! They havea  wide variety of colours available. Their site is members.peak.org/~spark/FineFiberPressTapestryYarns.htm. The tapestry artist that is a partner in the business, uses 4 strands at 10 epi. So the ability to use a finer sett is possilble. Her tapestries are gorgeous and can also be found on the site. They also sell a variety of tapestry weaving equipment at members.peak.org/~spark/FineFiberPressTapestryMiscellaneous.htm

Thanks for all the other great recommendations.

Cheers,

J:)

Hello All,

I am a complete newbie coming out of the lurking corner.

I just ordered color cards from Glimakra-USA.  I have not seen the colors yet, but this site was recommended on another group.  When I emailed to ask for a catalog I got a very kind and helpful reply from the person who runs the site, Joanne Hall.  She was really generous with her time and answered several questions I had.

They also sell warp yarns and looms and tools and give lessons.

I am hoping to make it to one of her classes some time.  I live in Northern CA and her studio is in Montana.

Anyway, the site is www.glimakra-usa.com .

Welcome Seaphish,

Glad to see a new contributor here.  I will be interested in hearing what you think of Glimakra's wools.  What do they offer?

Isn't tapestry just the best thing ever?

Mary

 Hello,

I've been on Weavolution for sometime but haven't posted but once, I don't believe.  I both weave tapestry and teach it here at my studio in Dahlonega and also in other places (most recently in early August at John Campbell Folk School).  I'll be interested to read more about others' tapestries.

Tommye,

Welcome to our group.  You are one of my tapestry heroes, you know.  I read your blog all the time.  Sometimes I just log on to check out the progress of your tapestry diary.

So who is your favorite supplier and what are your favorite yarns?

Mary

 Hi Everyone,

I'm new to tapestry weaving and weavolution. I've only been a member for a short time but I've already learned a lot. I've been dreaming about weaving a tapestry and I have just warped my little loom and am now waiting for my wool to arrive. I used a photo that my husband took when we went to Italy a couple of years ago. It's a pic of a little town called Burano. Each house is a different color. I used my pc stitch program to convert the photo to a cross stitch pattern and then removed the grid lines. Now I have the color design printed out to use as a cartoon. I can't wait to start. I'v also added a heddle stick with string heddles to make the weaving a little faster. I will post pix as soon as I have someting to show and I look forward to seeing what others are up to.

Hi Mary... sorry to be several days between your question and my reply--haven't gotten into the habit of checking in here yet!

Thanks for the comment about "tapestry hero!"  Hard to imagine!  Thanks for reading my blog.  Tapestry diary is moving along just fine although I'll be gone this week so will have to weave new white "blank days" when I get back.

To answer your question about suppliers:

bobbins:  John Moss

weft yarn: Norsk Fjord Fiber -- I use Vevgarn, the 50/50 wool/Spelsau yarn for almost all of my tapestries.  I also use the 20/2 wool that Kathe Todd-Hooker is now selling (Fine Fiber Press).  I also have used the Victorian Tapestry Wool quite a bit (from Laura Shannock).  And, for small tapestries I frequently use embroidery floss -- the kind that's in lots of colors and easy to find almost anywhere.

warp: cotton seine twine from Norsk Fjord Fiber; also from Joanne Hall at Glimakra USA (in Montana).  Occasionally use linen rug warp--Noel at NFF has one I use and I've also gotten from Joanne.

Looms: I have a couple of Hagen looms (Norwegian), many copper pipe looms of Archie Brennan style that I've built, a Tissart loom, and a Fireside tapestry loom and a Ruthie tapestry loom (similar to larger Fireside loom)

Again... so sorry to be so long to reply!

That sounds a lovely first project, Alice! Please post photos so we can share your progress. Cross stitch programs can be really useful, even if you never use a needle, lol!

Tommye,

No worries about the length of time to respond. I've been busy myself and don't log on as much as I would like.

I agree with you on most of your suppliers.  I love John Moss and his bobbins are always  beautiful. He recently changed the way he gauges the tips; they transition wonderfully from the wood to the brass tip again.

I have used the Victorian tapestry wood from Laura Shannock, it is great, isn't it?  I have recently been using a lot of Appleton wool since it is a  bit cheaper and the delivery is great. I can count on seeing my order in 1 - 2 days.  When you are in the middle of a project that is a good thing.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on suppliers here.  It gives me confidence that I know of most of the suppliers you mentioned.  That, of course, is due as much to this forum as to my brilliant mentors.

Aliced3786,

How exciting, your first project. It sounds like you have things well under control.  I look forward to seeing your piece as it progresses.

I agree that the heddle stick does make weaving faster. I don't use it on my smaller pieces but for the big ones it is vital.  Good luck starting your project, I know you will love the process once you get into it.

Ok several recommendations for John Moss here, I'm just wondering if he has a page where he's posted pictures of his bobbins. I think I might actual own some, bought from Handweaver's Studio in London, but I'm not sure!

I love nice brass ipped bobbins as well, so I'm always on the look out for great suppliers.

I don't believe John has a website.  I'm not sure if he has posted pix somewhere.  E-mail me privately and I'll send along his e-mail to you so you can contact him, if you want to.

John will send you a photo and description when you e-mail him.  His e-mail address is above in this thread. He doesn't have a website.  His bobbins are available with two differently shaped brass tips or all wood.  I was pleased to find out he uses dogwood, one of the most indestructible woods for small things like bobbins and shuttles.  Other woods are also available.

Has anyone used the tapestry yarn from  Weaving Southwest ? They have the same hue in different values (from light to dark) which I really like from an artistic perspective. They sell 4 ounce (100% virgin wool) skeins for $13. Right now they are redoing their colors to ensure color consistency from batch to batch so the older dyelots are on sale for $10 skein. (I'm not associated with them, but I recently called to get info and a color card.) The colors look nice. They also sell rug yarn. If anyone has experience with this yarn, what do you think?
