Hello,

I'm just starting to learn back-to-front warping.  I've asked some questions about it before, and was directed to Peggy Osterkamp's instuctional DVDs.  I'm finally getting around to watching one of them, and it is extremely informative!  Thank you for the great recommendation!

Now that I'm really diving into this, I'm realizing I'm not fully equipped.  I don't have any lease sticks or what Peggy is calling an "end stick."  Although these seem simple to make, they aren't that pricey and I'm considering just ordering some.  My question is, what size sticks do I need for my loom?  I have a 15 3/4" table leclerc, so I assume I would need these in that size: http://woolery.com/lease-sticks-leclerc-15-3-4-22-24-27-36-45-and-60.html.  However, I'm not seeing "end sticks" sold anywhere, at least not under that name.  It sounds like the end stick should be wider than your warp, but not wider than your loom.  The one in the DVD looks larger in size than the lease sticks.  Does a difference in size matter?  Can I order three 15 3/4" lease sticks, and use two as lease sticks, and one as an end stick?  Or is the end stick something completely different?

Help!

Thank you!

All sticks should be about the width of our loom. The "end stick" is most likely the tieon stick to attach the warp to the beam - stronger than the lease sticks, but not so long that it will not wind on the warp beam.

That makes sense.  So, could I just make an end stick by getting a flat wooden dowel and cutting it to the right length?  Does it need holes in either end?

Use a flat board as tieon stick so it doesn't bend.

You can use the tie-on bar from the cloth beam as the end stick.  It simply is put through the end loops of your warp.  Before you beam your warp, you transfer the loops of warp onto the tie-on bar on the warp beam.  Some weavers simply tie the end stick to the tie-on bar.  This tie can come undone when you get to the end of the warp when you are weaving your last inches and your tension is tight, so I prefer to transfer the loops to the warp beam tie-on bar.  If you do this, you don't need an extra stick to use as the end stick.  Just use the tie-on bar on your cloth beam.

I've changed over my 1/4 inch rod to 3/8 on my looms. (Nice OLD brass curtain rods) It doesn't flex now. I can tie right on to either loom. On my Structo I use mule tape straps on the warp beam. I have 6 straps, but I only use the ones neceassary for the warp as the outside ones will tend to flex your tieon rod. Peggy Osterkamps has a write-up on this - that's where I got it.

piling onto this conversation a little late but my favorite lease sticks are plexi glass rods or dowel rods sanded smooth.  I have two pair of the plexi glass which are perfect width for my AVL WDL and use dowl rods cut to size for my Cranbrook and Harrisville rug loom.

Here is a link to my old Cranbrook with the older lease sticks which were great.
