My Corner Of The World - Feb 2014

Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month!

The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world. It does not
have to be weaving related, but it could be.

Feel free to tell us about holidays in your country, whether it is religious,
or Independence day, or commemoration days.

Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers are very visual people.

Please remember to downsize your photo before uploading.

Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?)
This forum has members internationally.

Have a good day!

Saint Maroun`s

Queezle

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. In the US, Feb 2nd is the day that a groundhog comes out of hibernation. If he sees his shadow, the story goes, he gets scared, runs back into his burrow, and we have 6 more weeks of winter. I learned from my daughter that this holiday derives from the french "crepe day", or Chandeleur.

sally orgren

In my corner of the world, the (hedge)hog has certainly seen the shadow(weave), so six more weeks of winter (weaving) it will be! For lunch, I will take your advice Queezle and have crepes, although our version is called Swedish Pancakes, served with fresh fruit, a bit of powdered sugar and whipped cream, or, spread with lingonberry jelly. If you are really lucky (or live in Sweden), someone might have a dollop of cloudberry jam!

kerstinfroberg

Sally, sorry to disappoint you, but...
In, hm, ordinary lunch restaurants, pancakes are served every Thusrsday, as an addition to the pease pudding (ok, "pea soup", then). Usually, one is given the choice of lingonbery jam to go with them. IF there is a good "salad buffé" one might be able to snag some cottage cheese, tomatoes or kale to go w the pancakes. Fresh fruit? Whipped cream? (Certainly, but you will either have to pay extra ("business lunch", for instance) or be with your loving in-laws...)

This said, myself I am a "pancake monster", according to my SO... But my best pancakes come w sour cream and caviar, and...)

However: good luck, enjoy them while you can!

endorph

the hedgehog certainly did see the shadow weave! and regardless of what they are called or what is on them the pancakes look delicious!

Queezle

Love the shadow weave and hog!  Daughter is mixing crepes at this moment, and insists that nutella is the authentic filling.  I cannot compain about that.

Michael White

to my part of Georgia, YES YES. Gen Lee (ground hog in GA) is telling me so. Today was the first day in forever that the temp was above freezing this morning. Right now at 5:12 EST it is 64f with rain moving in for the next three days.

Michael

La La

Those crepes look delicious. Perfect for up here in New England where it is snowing again...and they say again next Wed and again next Sat. At least if the power goes out I don't need electricity to weave (during the day)... Cross that out, I don't even want to think about power out, because in the woods that means no water too. Wish I had a big plate of those pancakes for lunch.

sally orgren

And more than I was expecting! At least 5" have fallen, and it's not letting up anytime soon. I predicted it would snow for the Super Bowl, but guess I was off by one day.

Weavejoyforall

Lots of wet snow here over 6 inchs so far but is due to stop in an hour or so...sooooooo.... Its a good day for dressing a loom!  Hope to do so today or tomarrow....   Ct. in winter is a weavers holiday. Snow again in a day then again on sat. to sunday maybe too.

pammersw

No snow or rain in NM for nearly two months now, a winter record. We briefly crawled back to near-normal precipitation last fall, but now we're back solidly in a deep drought.  We're going into the fourth year of drought now, and I miss rain! Snow would do, too. Albuquerque,  New Mexico,  USA.

sally orgren

When I was in Taos, it was snowing the whole time, right before Thanksgiving. And it was record warm in NYC. Perhaps I am the snowmaker? (Maybe I need to return?) I'll be back in AZ in March. (If the rains come, that will cinch it!)

pammersw

Yes, Sally, the ski areas here opened before Thanksgiving for the first time in decades, but no snow to speak of in December and January has many of them half-closed! Come back, we could use the precipitation! ! ;)

pammersw

It's snowing!  We'll be lucky to get a quarter inch, but it's still exciting!

sally orgren

Wednesday, (to exceed a foot), or the storm coming on Sunday?

I really DO wish I could ship some of this snow to the Sierras. We are seeing the satellite maps of last year compared to this year. Wow. I was in California the last time it was way-dry and there was rationing — in the late 70's. No fun.

pammersw

Probably the Wednesday one...but it's just a smattering here. I would LOVE to be able to call in to work "snowed in" but that hasn't happened since a 16" freak snow storm in December 2006. Edited above to add a photo.

sally orgren

Pammersw,

I was inspired by your photo! Was that enough snow to get you out of work?

Took this yesterday morning, but we are receiving the precip from storm #2 today (possibly your snow?) which added another couple of inches to this base, followed by sleet. The news is predicting power outages later in the day due to the heavy snow and ice accumulation...

La La

Well it's at it again. I was out at 6am shoveling a path for my short legged dogs. Hi. Weaveforjoy, I am in Ct. too. Lovely today, isn't it. I am working on two looms now. One is all set for dishtowels, and the other is an experimental warp, that I am hoping will turn into a poncho. It should be interesting, because it is a new kind of pattern for me. The yarn is driving me nuts, however. Sticking together. Today will be a day of playing with the dogs and weaving, and the dogs playing with the loom and bothering me. Stay warm everyone.

pammersw

It was work as usual! Started snowing at 11 a.m. today, is supposed to snow lightly all night, and only a few inches is expected by morning.  That will be a work day for me, too, as I'm giving a training presentation in the morning,  LOL! And I have a class tomorrow night. It's supposed to stat up again during the day,  could be interesting!

endorph

this morning - 20 degrees with a wind chill of 5 - slight chance of snow flurries but so far just windy and cold - gray and gloomy

sally orgren

This was what the sky looked like driving back to NJ from MA through CT. It was a cold, eerie sun, and the monster n'easter was still 7-8 hours away.

sally orgren

MY corner of the world is very snowy right now.

Queezle

Yup, I didn't believe it either, but you can find the rules here:

http://nationalmargaritaday.com/

drink up and enjoy!  I picked up some blood oranges, and so am looking for the appropraite blood orange margerita recipe now.

Michael White

Today 72f and sunny, by the middle of next week 28/40F.

A weaving friend in MI sent this to me this morning. Enjoy.

Dear Diary:

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Mount Wolf Pennsylvaina. It is so beautiful here. The

hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have beautiful old oak tree

in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is

truly God's Country.

Oct. 14 -Pennsylvania is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on

Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all

of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to

walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer. They

are so graceful, certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on

Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can't imagine why anyone would

want to  shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and

tranquility here in Pennsylvania.  I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to the usual wonderful sight:

everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is

magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from

the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a

snowball fight. I won, and the snowplow came down the street. He must have

gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the

end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I

love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little

trick again.  What a rascal.  A winter wonderland.  I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work in

time. I'm exhausted from all of the shoveling.  And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white shit coming down. I've got blisters on my

hands and a kink in my back.  I think that the snowplow driver waits around

the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. Jackass.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas?  More freakin' snow. If I ever get my hands on

the sonofabitch who drives that snowplow, I swear I'll castrate him. And

why don't they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn't stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside

since then, except of course when that SOB "Snowplow Harry" comes by. Can't

go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect

another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it's coming down it won't melt until the

4th of July! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the jackass actually had  the balls to come and ask to borrow a shovel!  I told him I'd broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some

food and a g-ddamn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bastard.

It did $3,000 in damage to the car. Those beasts ought to be killed. The

hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow

into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the

front yard and it went through the roof. I should have cut that old piece

of shit into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

April 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole

underside of the car is rusted away from all of that damn salt they dump on

the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow shit.

May 10 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida. I  can't imagine

why anyone in their freakin' mind would ever want to live in the God

forsaken State of Pennsylvania...

To provide an antidote to all that snow, here are some lovely violets blooming by my front door:

Violets in California!

These kind of violets aren't common in the Bay Area - too dry and sunny - so I've had trouble keeping mine alive. But I persist because I grew up with violets as a child, so they remind me of my childhood on the East Coast. This year Mike has set them up with sprayers so they will not dry out.

Also, all of our trees are bursting into bloom. The plums are midway through and our almond tree is done already. It's been scattering beautiful white-and-pink flower petals all over the yard. Spring is definitely here! Temperatures have been in the fifties at night and the high 60s/low 70s during the day.

And we are also in the midst of a severe drought - so I would welcome rain or even snow! Unfortunately snow is unlikely to happen - the last time it snowed in Sunnyvale was 1976.
