Happy New Year! Its hard to believe another year is gone - looking forward to a weaverly year ahead. Everyone has been so productive over the last few months - actually all year - good job! Looking forward to all the projects to come in the weeks to come.  Weave on everyone!

Still working on those Christmas gift scarves. The last one I need to "give" tomorrow is half done now. I can easily finish it in the morning.  The bamboo weft with wool warp is coming out nice! It will be warm and soft.  Static is an issue, though, because it is so dry. The weft yarn keeps clinging to the warp anywhere it can.

endorph

got some spinning done - some mini skeins as well as about 2 oz of colonialI still need to work on my plying technique - these were all done on my spindle - tomorrow I play with the wheel.

ReedGuy

Nice looking yarn Tina, keep at it. :)

By the time I finish this current blanket I should be ready to warp my line linen to make some herringbone 'black and white' upholstery webbing. Aside from my chair build, mom has some bamboo furniture that was not cheap, but they used sleezy synthetic strapping in the seats. Very poor choice as it is uncomfortable for starters. Quite something that we have to replace someone's choice of junk webbing. ;)

Well I guess it's the new year. Everyone better get busy or I'll out weave ya's. LOL ;)

Erica J

10 hours into the new year and I have 1.6" worth of pattern heddles threaded. Let the year of the drawloom begin. :)

I love those yarns Tina!

endorph

the dogs let me get about 4.5 hours of sleep - they were upset byt the fireworks in the nieghborhood so we didn't get to bed until after 1 - then they were ready to be out about again at 4:30 but I got them to settle back down until about 6 - now its off to the dog park - once home I will decide if I will knit, spin or warp! - I guess I could do all three!

Thanks for the comments on the yarn. I am getting a bit more consistent in the spinning the singles - plying is another matter altogether - :)

Edited to say - I said good morning but for some of our members it is afternoon or evening - so greetings to you as well!

Erica J

I have nearly threaded half the pattern heddles, then it's just the ground heddles, reed and popping the pattern heddles on the proper bar. :)

I also got day of my first tapestry diary woven! :)

It's not much, but as we know every little helps!

tommye scanlin

Indeed, every little bit helps!
My 2014 tapestry diary will start today; just cut off 2013.  2014 will be my sixth year of the practice.  I have other tapestry work that is ongoing but the daily bit is something I still find to be intriguing.

Happy weaving of all kinds to you!

Erica - the drawloom is looking great.

Looking forward to seeing what you and Tommye do on the tapestry diaries. Cathie are you doing a tapestry diaries this year?

I managed to get my RH warped and started weaving this morning. I got a variable dent reed for it so am playing with that. No real plan on what this will become - just going to play around with it. Maybe use some of my handspun bits and pieces.

The new years seems to be off on a good start. BTW Erica - did I tell you that once I upgraded to IE11 all of my compatibility issues went away?

Erica J

I'm so glad IE11 sorted things out!

Tommye, I am looking forward to the regular practice. I haven't done much tapestry so this one is all about technique. I have to say I likethe vertical loo  with treadles and reed already! :)

theresasc

I have about 2 more inches to go and I will be finished with my first tapestry on the Tissart.  I am with you Erica, the upright loom with treadles is the way to go.  This will be the first time that I will actually cut off a finished tapestry - kind of exciting.  I have an image in my minds eye for the next one as well.  I had put about 3 yards of warp on the loom when it came home in November, so I am planing on cutting off and tieing back on.

tommye scanlin

Erica, what is your upright loom?  I can't see it too well in the photo but what I see looks very interesting!  Theresasc, it's nice to hear you're enjoying the Tissart.  My tapestry diary is on my Tissart and I enjoy sitting down at it every morning to weave a little bit.  I just now finished with the last of the prep work for the 2014 warp and put in my beginning passes for today.  This year my plan is:  to have no plan but to sit down and do at least 5 minutes at the loom each day, using a different color of weft.  When I look at the tapestry in times to come I'll know that each color represents a day.  Simple as that.  Might be a lot of the color or a little.  But every day will hold something different, color-wise.

Happy weaving to all!

Tommye

I was able to buy a Dryad from a friend's work's sale list. I u derstand it's really a rug loom, but it's working grand for tapestry thus far. I'm on the zen diary plan as well. :)

Does anyone have 'The Swedish Weaving Book: Project Planning, Loom Dressing, and Finishing' (2008) by Erikson et al? Only place I see it listed is at Halcyon yarn company. I interested in the 'Finishing' section. The authors have an older book called 'Weaving: Calculations and Finishing' (1998). I figure the newer book incorporates all the info.

I received an interesting gift. It's a calendar printed on a knitted scarf, with today's date printed at the bottom. Additionally, the scarf has a tail of yarn hanging off the lower end. The idea is to unravel a few rows to remove each day as the year progresses.

The gifter told me "creative types have a hard time with deconstruction." I guess she was right. My first reaction was thinking at the end of the year, I would have a big ball of yarn that I could weave up into something and return the gift back to her! ;-)

endorph

idea - to create something to be deconstructed. . . . I guess you would need ot be sure there are at least 365 rows in the scarf!

I am contemplating a new pattern on my rigid heddle loom ...  One for the ages.... actually, I am going to attempt to weave 3-1 herringbone twill this year.   I recently read an article on the Turin Shroud... and found that it is indeed 3-1 twill and that it has been a known pattern as far back as as they know, maybe even several hundred years before Christ.   It tickles my"Historical"( Can I do this on just one heddle loom?) side.  I just love the Idea I might be doing something this ancent with my own two little hands the reason I think I love the whole Idea a weaving in the first place. Thousands of years ago people were doing tabby weave to make all sorts of things ... I want to try this on my Loom...will give an update when I learn how!!!!!!

Did I make it sound like I could do 3-1 herringbone twill with just one heddle....oh no!  but with another heddle and two pick up sticks I can. Sorry.  Also sorry for the double post. Not sure why it does this from time to time. I'm sure its my fault but I just can't seem to stop it from happening now and again...Double sorry...! Happy New Year all.

Here in lower Ct. we are going to have a minor blizzard for the next couple of days ...what will I be doing ?  WARPing up for another project YEAH!

Congrats on the Tapestry victory!

Finished my son's scarf today, measured warp for my boyfriend's son's scarf, and balled the yarn that will be the weft.

Artistry

Boy, go away for a day and look at all this activity ReedGuy, you're already SpeedWeaver:) Erica, enjoy your Tapestry Diary! It looks like you're off to a great start ! Theresasc , congrats on cutting off your tapestry! Do you know the story of when you finish a tapestry it's the time to have your friends over for the cutting off then Champagne! Tina, I finished the Tapestry Diaries through December 2013 so I did them for a year and a half but I'm not going to do them for 2014. 2014 I'm setting my goals on a larger tapestry ( not real large!) and will of course throw some floor loom weaving in there too:) Meanwhile I wait for my studio to be finished!

ReedGuy

Has anyone came across any projects in their magazine subscriptions for weaving and sewing covers for kitchen counter appliances? At one time toaster covers were a fad. I have a slicer that I would like to make a cover for to keep dust off it. I have no idea when I'll get to it, too much other stuff on the go right now. But would be nice to see some ideas.  Dimensions are irrelevant, just something for ideas. :)

10/2 or 8/2 yarn weight

Good morning (or afternoon/evening wherever you all are) :) I am brand spanking new here to this site (fresh from Ravelry) and am trying to find a waffle weave towel draft for a 4shaft loom (if it is even doable). I am really new to weaving (about 2 months) and someone on Rav mentioned this site so I came here...many thanks in advance for any help...

Erica J

Deb,

Welcome again! :)

I typed waffle weave into the search bar and selected draft and came up with many results including this

You cab do the same thjng selectinv project. This one is pretty, but click through as many as you like for inspiration!

endorph

group and to the site. You can do waffle weave on 4 shafts - I have even done it on a rigid heddle loom. I am sure someone here can direct you to a draft - I am not at home so cant direct you to any resources off the top of my head.

endorph

good luck with the 3/1 twill - I ahve done that on the RH and it wasn't too bad. I have also done a 2/2 twill on the RH with one heddle and a pickup stick - it was a bit labor intensive but you get into a sort of rythmn and it moves right along.

ReedGuy

Your waffle will be much better if you use 5 treadles with the 4 shafts.

DebS

Still trying to weave my way around this site ;), I appreciate all the help though, you all are so nice! Heading to look at the links above...big thank you to reedguy for typing in all the x's and o's! :)

sally orgren

the classic Marguerite Davison Handweaver's Pattern Book, or Anne Dixon's Handweaver's Pattern Directory for waffle weave drafts.

Anne's book is more contemporary with large color photos showing the front and back of fabrics.

Home Weaving by Oscar Beriau also has some waffle weave drafts that are a little different.

Welcome!

P.S. Finished weaving my towels yesterday, hemming and washing today after I vacuum the newly formed felt layer under the loom from this highly linty material.

Erica J

Pattern hedles are threaded. This is my first time with 10/2 cotton so it's not been 100% smooth. Though I timed myselfthe last 10 pattern units (40 threads). I was threading 4 threads every 1-2 mins. Not bad.

Glad you're enjoyinv the site Deb. I think tge Weavolution community has to be one of the nicest on the web!

Congrats on the towels Sally.

Btw today was red-orange and descresing slope on the tapestry diary.

ReedGuy

Warp and weft has 5 variations with drafts and photos of a couple examples. I think an 8 shaft waffle is a minimum to make reversible (both sides good). This is because one side is warp effect the other weft and the waffle tieup will show the whole waffle pattern with a straight draw and not a wedge that needs a point twill.

The more treadles you have the more pronounced the hole is.

Queezle

I am trying to weave more, and toward that end, I am trying to weave several times a week, regardless of how busy I am at work.  Last night I managed to do some more on my twill sampler.

Still working on Georgia O'Keefe's Chair, up in my daughter's room :)

I found teapot covers (cozies) in Handwoven 1992 (Jan/Feb and May/June), 1995 (May/June), and 1989 (Mar/April).

ReedGuy

Thanks Rose :) I'll take a look on Interweave.

sally orgren

I posted a teapot cozy here at Weavo on behalf of a guildmate.

Sherrie (Miller) is a Weavo member, and has recently released a book. You can contact her directly if you have questions about her technique on this project.

theresasc

has all kinds of covers - coffe maker, toaster, blender, etc.  I picked the parrern up because one of these years I am going to weave a cover for my stand mixer.  There is not an exact pattern for that, but I should be able wrk it out.

Cathy - champagne for cutting off a tapestry - I .ike that concept alot.

Back to work for me today, so I am afraid that this comment is my weaverly thing today.

ReedGuy

Yes thanks theresa I saw that in Google searches. It goes under one of those 'dummy' books. Right up my alley when it comes to sewing. :D

DebS

Oh duh...now I feel like a doofus, I have the handweavers directory but have not even cracked it open as of yet.  I have been learning all about weaving from Deborah Chandlers book as well as practicing with some twill tea towels...thank you again Sally!

Weavejoyforall

Thanks for the encouragment !  I still have to come up with the $$ for an extra heddle and heddle block for my 24 inch Harp. But this project is on my list for the new year for sure.  My Birthday is in Sept. and I will have the second heddle and block by then.  Sooooo, there is plenty of time for  other more simple sampler type work till then.   Another heddle and a second block will cost about 60 or so bucks sooooo.... hope to save up my pennys doing other things till then. I am planing to warp another scarf tomarrow afternoon.. my Christmas gifts are done and would have been given by now if my Brother and Sis in law had not been ill this Christmas.  We plan to see them in Feb. Can't wait for them to see their new scarfs. (guess I'm just a little kid at heart) ;)

The new year is a blowing!  Snow is coming down and its a brrrr.... kind of night.  I was almost home this eve and realized that I had left the heater on in the bathroom at the studio, its only 5 miles, but it was cold!  Productive day, beamed waffle weave towels (sorry Weavejoy for all don't remember the issue, but it came from Handwoven).  Wound a warp for some twill towels.  Looks like you all are being busy already, hats off to those that are tackling a tapestry diary, sounds cool, but not this year!  Pammersw keep at it - - - you are an inspiration in your quest for more fiber knowledge and experience!

pammersw

Me, an inspiration?  Aw, gee, thanks...!

Imagine what I could do if I'd learned 35 years ago, like I wanted to. There is so much to do and learn!

Please welcome Emmy, my new 40-shaft AVL Ultimate Dobby Loom!

Four of my friends and I spent six hours assembling her yesterday, plus I spent another three hours this morning. I accidentally put in the warp brake assembly on the wrong side, so I have to fix that tomorrow morning, but she's basically done! I'm super excited.

Here's what she looked like when she arrived:

Loom crate being loaded onto truck

The forklift is moving her 800 pound crate onto the U-Haul I rented to pick her up at the freight terminal! I had to disassemble the crate inside the U-haul, as there was simply no way to move something that big/heavy off the truck.

Lots more description (with lots of photos) of the loom-raising party in today's blog post.

Erica J

I must be crazy all the new things I'm trying right now. Setting up my drawloom, using 10/2 cotton for tge first time and brushed mohair!

I have to say I am sampling with these. So I am doing things properly. All part of the learning process.

Artistry

WOW, great photos this morning! Erica good luck on your project, the colors in the brushed mohair are luscious ! Tien, congratulations on Emmy's homecoming ! Here's wishing you years of Joy weaving on her! Today I tackle Geogia O'Keefe's Chair again. It's seems like the most challenging tapestry I've done, very slow going. So much to learn in this piece, even if it is goofy looking:) negative vs. positive space!

endorph

on the new loom - shes beautiful - will have to check out your blog

Erica - good luck with the mohair.

I did not weave yesterday but I finished spinning my first skein on the wheel . One observation I made was that I tended to over spin the singles and under spun the plying! Oh well, I am sure rpactice and time will help with that! But regardless I have a lovely skein of yarn drying in the laundry room, along with a lovely skein of yarn from the drop spindle.

tien (not verified)

Yowza! Watch out for the brushed mohair - it sticks like crazy. If it does, you might want to consider hairspray or something like that to tame the fuzz. How widely is it spaced?

tien (not verified)

Congrats on spinning your first skein on the spinning wheel! I haven't spun for over a decade but I remember how frustrating it was the first time I tried to spin on a wheel. So congrats on that!

Erica J

Thank everyone. Brushed mohair is 3/5  the way through sleighing! It is 10 epi in 10 dpi reed. I am warping front to back in the hopes the reed will seperate all the fuzz before it goes on the back beam. Tien, I had already noticed yhe sticky fuzz, but your advice has lead me to use paper as the seperator material.

I was a bit off in the studio earlier. Started weaving on the tapestry without putting tension back on! Oops figured it out in the end and all is well!
