Hello, hoping some of you are still around. I am getting a Herald loom that was part of an estate of a local lady and I was wondering if any of you have a big loom. I think mine is between 40-48 inches wide. It folds up and I noticed a long metal rod on the diagonal on the outside that reminds me of a strut but it doesn't compress. I hope the people who have it at the shop where I am buying it from (antique shop) know how to colapse it for transport. If not, do any of you know how and is it too difficult to explain over this forum?

Long diagonal rod?  On the outside of the loom?  Does the loom have double warp beams?  If so, the long rod is the brake release.

The loom doesn't fold up much.  If you have a solid warp beam, then the back of the loom folds to the castle and that's it!

To make it easier to transport, remove the shaft frames, front and back beams to lighten the load.

today but I will need to get one up here soon. Double warp beams? Uh oh. I am going to have to investigate that one. I think it could be a brake release. I use a Glimakra at school and we have many styles and brands but I haven't seen many Heralds even online. I did see a few negative comments about them but I did see some nice ones as well. I can only find about 5 pictures of them online total and none are as big as the one I am getting.

I know the poster of the negative comments.  I am one of the posters of the positive ones.  I can send/post you some pics later today.  Janet Meany of the Loom Manual Library can get you photocopies of the original manuals.

I did further investigate the double back beam and discovered its uses so I am good in that aspect to a small degree. I do recall after seeing a few photos of different ones that indeed mine might be a double. I do need to get some photos of the loom to post.

posting pictures seems to be hard. I will try a third time here

This loom is just like mine - dated walnut stained 8 shaft - only mine has a friction brake on the second, lower warp beam.  The good news is, you have a crank for yours and I don't!

What I don't see is the second back beam to go with the warp beam.  It's another beam that bolts on so the second warp doesn't ride on top of the first warp.  If I get a chance later this week, I'll try to photograph mine.

This looks like a home-built lease stick holder.  I've always intended to build a jig to hold the lease sticks, but never got around to it because I didn't want to drill a hole in my looms (past and present!).

Still not seeing the 2nd back beam...

hi sequel

has your loom got a metal plate fitted as in the pic if it has all you need to fit a longer bolt and make a lease stick holder

the second beam near the floor on my model? That's what my teacher said it was too. Turns out we have a double back beam model at school in a Glimakra but the second beam is up high in its castle. I never noticed it before.

What you see attached near the base of the loom is the second warp beam, what I don't see is the second back beam...

Your warp winds up on the warp beam, then it goes over the back beam toward the shafts.  I'm taking a pix of mine today, but I need a few missing bolts to get it installed.

so far I can't get it in the door. I will have to remove the front. I got the back folded but it is 3 inches too wide to pass. Lol. Figures. And had shenannigans with the antique store owner. I will never be returning to that store which is sad because I love the place. Anyway, thats another story. I got it home and paid though. Whew. And lots of neat stuff to go with it! The 6 reeds was probably the best score.

it is in my house, not out in the elements...
