I will post a few possible profile drafts that catch my fancy later. In the mean time I'd love to see what you have planned and where you're at. Are you waiting to start winding the warp until May or are you a head of the game and winding now?

Cheers,

Erica

I was asked to design a baby blanket for a friends brother and S&W will be perfect! I was about to sell my AVL but I'm glad I didn't because now I have a great project in mind.  Although I have to wait for my other 2 day jobs to quieten down first!  I'll be starting my warp mid May.

I did Summer and Winter years ago and none since.  So, I'm reading up right now.   I'm not sure what I have in mind will work in a S&W. . .  So that will be the challenge.

Erica

Sally,

Feel free to post your idea here and get feedback. I'm not experienced enough to give my opinion, but I'm sure some others in the group are!

I can't wait to see what everyone weaves,

Erica

weaver I am not sure if I am up for summer and winter yet but I wan'ted to see what everyone is doing and try and learn from others more experience than I. However I might decide to just dive in and see what happens! Tina

Ok, so I have a draft that I like for this project.   But most of what I'm reading seems to say that the pattern yarn is heavier than the tie down yarn.  The yarn I plan to use is two colors of the same weight.   I'm wondering if that will work?   I'm trying to make yardage for a light jacket or vest.  It's a lace weight wool.

I know someone will tell me to sample, but I don't have much / any extra of ths yarn so if I did sampling it would have to be using a different yarn.  I'm not sure how much that would tell me. . . .

(I've been weaving with cotton all winter, so now that it's spring I'm thinking of wool - go figure!)

Erica

Endorph,

I know how that goes, hopefully the WAL will inspire you to give it a try. Do you have any questions for us that might help you get started?

Cheers,

Erica

Erica

Sally,

This may seem like an obvious question, but do you have any yarn that is the same, but a different color, or something in a similar weight for sampling. That would at least tell you how well doubling the yarn would work. It would also give you drape information so you would know if the end fabric was going to be nice for the jacket.

Cheers,

Erica

Getting ready for a new tartan project as soon as my cones arrive to start warping and sleying, 840 ends across 6 yards finished length.

I am reading up on Summer and winter right now and don't know that I know enough to even ask a question. I was going to try and take your class but I am tied up that day on other things so I may jusy go ahead tan take the plunge - The worst that can happen is that I end up with something that is not S& W but hopefully useful anyway! Tina

I've convinced myself that the yarn I had in mind isn't going to work for S & W.  I think the resulting fabric will be too heavy for what I want.  I dug out the piece I did years ago, and it was done with 10/2 cotton and was like a double thick sort of fabric because of the tie down threads.

BTW, there is a terrific article by Lillian Whipple on Summer and Winter weave and the different treddlings at Weavzine:

http://weavezine.com/content/summer-and-winter-taquet%C3%A9#Dukagang

There is also a chapter on it in "A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns," edited by Carol Strickler.  (You don't have to have 8 shafts, but you pattern will be a little more limited.)

Apologies all, I didn`t realize this was a specific group -

endorph

r1mein54 come and join us! Your tartan weaving is a joy to see so I am looking forward to your current project - then warp on for a summer and winter project and WAL.

Erica

I have found a few projects using Summer and Winter

Unfortunately the link I posted for Weavevine no longer works.  (I imaging Syne was paying for server hosting and the contract was up.   Since she isn't doing it any more, it didn't make sense to keep paying for it.   But, this is just my guess.)

You can also find it at Lillian Whipple's web site:

I want to weave some kind of bedspread and think summer & winter might be a good weave structure.  I don't want floats (not with my cats' claws!), so I eliminated overshot from the list.  But I think S&W would work great.  I found a pretty pattern in the Best of Weavers book on the subject.  It's on the cover.  I plan to do some practice weaving of placemats or maybe dishtowels to explore S&W.  I took a 1-day class several years ago and wove a sample during it, but didn't do anything afterwards. I'm not sure when I'll get started on it, but hopefully soon.

I'm looking forward to this!

Erica

Weavezine had a temporary issue with the ISP, but is now back online. Never fear the link still works and content is all still there!

In looking at Deborah Chandler's Learning to Weave (p. 187) she says, "for the pattern to show off to its maximum, the warp and tabby weft should be the same color (even the same yarn); the pattern weft should be another color and a somewhat fatter yarn."  And "If the yarn is soft and fluffy, it can be as much as 3 or 4 times fatter; if it's a hard-twist yarn, twice as fat is probably better."  Of course, she suggests trying "several wefts on your first sample."  Since I'm a true beginning weaver, I think I'll warp the width of a table runner (18"?)  and just play with summer and winter weft variations.

Erica

Chris,

It looks like you've really done your homework! I think sampling during this WAL is the perfect place for beginners to start!

I look forward to seeing your samples,

Erica

Is there a post somewhere with the guidelines for this weavealong?  I know that it starts in May (right?), but when are we supposed to finish?  And is there anything special we're supposed to do about posting our projects?  Or is this just real casual?

I'm fine with either a casual or structured approach.

Thanks!

Erica

Tina,

Thanks for asking. I did not create a special section of the site for the WAL Projects, like we did for Halloweave. This is a bit more casual. I do hope folks will post project photos in the thread I created. I look forward to seeing what everyone creates!

If you can finish by the end of May great, but I honestly understand that some may not.

Cheers,

Erica

reading up on smmer and winter and am going to talk to my weaving firends and see if I can find something simple to do for the WAL to learn on. First I need to finish up some dish towels that are on the loom. . . I keep teling myself that I can do this!

Was out of town a couple days, but I have a plan and I'm ready to warp!  I'm going to do a simple design from "Learning to Weave" page 183.  I still haven't really wrapped my head around profile drafts, but I think once the warp is on the loom things will start to come together.

Erica

Great job Chris! Is anyone else warping. I posted a new topic for photos, feel free to post in process photos, including warps, so we can see what fabulous colors you may be using. If you have your draft in software form you can also post a photo of that as well. That's not to say you can't photograph your paper drafts also!

Looking forward to seeing what everyone is weaving,

Erica

Well, I've wound the warp yarn and have it hanging over the front of the loom, but that's as far as I've gotten so far!  I need a couple uninterrupted hours to warp, so my plan is for Friday afternoon as soon as I get home from work.  I'm so looking forward to weaving all day Saturday, since my husband just said he has to work -- "Oh, that's too bad," I said, secretly rubbing my hot little weaving hands together with glee.

endorph

I am weaving on my current project I am not sure that I will get a summer and winter project started, let alone done in time for this WAL but hope springs eternal.

SallyE (not verified)

I'm not going to be able to do this, at least not right now.  I have a piece to finish, a commission to do, a week long class to attend, just picked up a new student, etc., etc.   This isn't going to happen.   I did do the planning however!   So I can do this later in the summer.

Maybe this challenge should be winter into summer into winter!

Erica

I hope you have a great time weaving Saturday, ChrisWeaveMaine. That is my plan as well! Especially since we hopefully only have 2 weeks until we move house and I will have to disassemble my Glimakra Standard to get it out!

To everyone else, don't feel bad if you won't be done by the end of the month, don't worry. Let's weave a long as long as we need! This is Summer into Winter, so take as long as you want! :)

I really look forward to seeing great projects and pictures in progress!

endorph

I will definitely try and get something done - at least a sample if nothing else -

endorph

the phone this morning I started doodling on some graph paper. I think I can put together something small and simple to use as a learning project. I am really pushing myself with this - new pattern, drafting, unsderstanding blocks. . . This has gotten me thinking about what I want to do for Halloweave this year. . . But first on to summer and winter - I know I can do this if I just put my mind to it - now to weave off the dish towels already on the loom - maybe what I really need is another loom so I can work on more than one project at a time. Is it possible to do summer and winter on the rigid heddle? Tina

Erica

Tina,

I'm glad to hear you found some inspiration this morning and are really sinking your teeth into Summer and Winter. I believe you can do Summer and Winter on the Rigid Heddle, I think you basically need pick up stick for each block and the right heddle.

I think you would basically translate 1,3,2,3 (3 being the block) to slot, slot pattern, hole slot pattern, repeat. However, I would check Betty Davenport's book on RH weaving before I would swear to this.

Perhaps someon else in this group has done summer and winter on the rigid heddle? Amelia and Claudia are also a great resource on Rigid Heddle Weaving.

Cheers,

Erica

I thought I would check out both the Davenport and the Patrick rigid heddle books. If I can do it on the rigid heddle I can get started sooner!

I don't know if I'll get any actual weaving done (travelling almost 2 weeks during this month!) but I did get some design work done today.  I've decided to make some mug rugs, using patterns found in the Weavers book on Summer and Winter.  They made miniature coverlet strips using 20/2 cotton for warp, but I'm using 10/2 cotton to make it bigger for mug rugs.

endorph

threading the loom tonight with an 8.5 wide warp to try out my fairly basic draft that I threw together. Wish me luck - I think I am doing this right. . . .

Erica

Tina & Endorph,

It looks like you're making progress. It looks like many of us will be weaving along beyond May, so this may truly be a Summer into Winter Weave A Long. Hopefully more summer weaving, for those of us in the Norhtern Hemisphere, than into Winter!

I'm still looking forward to seeing pictures of drafts, weaving, etc.

Cheers,

Erica

It took some doing (and un-doing), but I think I get this.  I used the Learning to Weave directions and did a simple two block pattern (A and B).  I was interrupted just when I started to see the patterns emerge, but I'm very excited to get back to it.  I'm going to experiment with different pattern yarns as soon as I can get back to my loom.

PS - in Ravelry's Rigid Heddle group, there are very good instructions for doing Summer and Winter on a rigid heddle.
