When I plan a project, I alwys leave enough warp to do a 6-8" sample at the beginning.  I am planning on doing the same and want to make placemats.  I am thinking they will be nice and thick on the table and have 4 nicely finished edges.  Plus, you can flip them over when one side is dirty and the other is clean and get more wear time.  So, sample and then placemats.

Now, what yarn.  I am leaning to 8/2 cotton because it softens up so nicely when washed and it takes a beating andl, most of all, I have lots of colors to choose from.  So, off to the Weaving Calculator here on Weavolution and start planning.

I took up this challenge because I have been drooling over the idea of doing overshot patterns in double weave. I have this pattern as inspiration... http://www.yarn.com/webs-valley-yarns-weaving-draft-4-shaft/webs-weaving-drafts-53-baby-blanket-colonial-double-weave/

The problem is I don't fully understand how this works, so I'll be doing a sample warp on my little Structo. The real version will be out of 4/2  cotton part dyed by me, part acquired from the mill end bin. I'm having trouble deciding what to do the sample in. The only reed I have for the Structo is 15 dent. I don't know if I want to go with 8/2 and a sett of 20epi (40 once doubled) or go with some 5/2 rayon I have and do a sett of 15 (30 once doubled). The cunumdrum is do I plan the sample as just a sample, or so I make it a useful item.

Well I have my finnweave piece warped and underway. I am getting a head start on the Oct 3 launch as I have added another chanllenge for a tote bag sewing/stripe project.

I hope you all don't mind if I get a bit of a head start. I'll be traveling to the US in mid October and so need to get my dares underway a little earlier.

Here is what I have on my finnweave project so far. It's 10" wide and will be made into a storage bag that will hang permanently off my bed post. I have made several very small samples in this technique and my dare was to make something somehat larger for Halloweave. I am using traditional Huichol and Otomi motifs.

Still going with my head start....

I am not using a reed and now it is apparent that my warps are spaced wider in the center than at the sides. At least the design is balanced as the two sides match (so far!). I am really enjoying weaving this and very happy to be moving beyond the narrow sample bands in this technique.

Thanks Leigh. I am sorry to have this going before the official start but I will be traveling in 2 1/2 weeks and so I have to go go go! Hopefully I can finish it before I leave.

Thanks Claudia :-)

Here I am just starting the final row of swirls. I could squeeze more out of this warp but this piece will be folded in two and sewn into a storage bag and it is already a bit too much on the long side. It will make quite a deep bag as a result and stuff will go in there and get lost at the bottom never to see the light of day again!
