I'm starting a new forum topic so that we have a place to post our project photos in one location.  Finished projects, stuff in progress -- as long as it is shibori, post here!

I'm starting out with a photo I took a while back to illustrate the gathering  process for lens article I wrote for Squido.

The design is really lovely.  What was your sett, Neki?

.On the loom. Shibori threads: shoe sewing thread

First attempt in Woven Shibori was following the instructions in Catherine Ellis's book on the subject. Understanding the technique, I dared going for the permanent pleats.

For the weft I used polyester yarn. After steaming I got the following results:

Nicely done.  I am totally captivated by permanent pleating -- just a nice addition to the complexity of the shibori process.

Lovely!  How long did you steam your scarf?   Did you use a regular steamer or something like a pressure cooker? How wide was it on the loom and after wash?  Is the scarf warp cotton?   My next shibory project will be with chenille.  Warp and weft.

I put the scarf in a regular cooking steamer with the lid on for about 20 minutes. The warp is cotton and the weft is polyester. For the shibori pattern I used a thick polyester 3ply thread, one that is used for sewing shoes. I wanted to make sure the thread would not break when pulling. Because this thread was rather thick it left small holes in the fabric after steaming. This gives a nice lacey result in the scalf. Before steaming the width of the scarf was 50cm wide. When it came out of the steamer it turned out to be only about 12cm wide.  I'm curious about your Shibory chenille project. Please show us a photo once finished.

I finished my experiment with loom woven shibori on handowoven rayon chenille.....detail of finished piece pictured below

I like the way this turned out, was surpirsed to see how the dye took to the bound chenille, and will definitely be doing more of this!

This is gorgeous, Su.  I haven't done any chenille shibori yet -- on my to do list.  I'm presuming that the ground cloth is plain weave.  How did you design your shibori thread shots or did you do a random pick up technique?

Su Butler

HI Beryl......the cloth is woven in plain weave with a chenille weft on a four shaft loom threaded 1,2,3,4.   The shibori thread shots are simply lifting shaft 1, shaft 2, shaft 3 and shaft 4 in order.  When gathered, that simple pattern made this lovely design!    I have a lot more ideas for making these pieces, so now I have to get the loom dressed and ready to weave more loom woven shibori fabrics!

The pattern turned out great -- looks far more complex than 1-2-3-4!  I think the combination of shibori and chenille make for real luxury pieces.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of your projects.

I thought this warp was alpaca but it is an organic merino wool.  Probably will not be much different from an alpaca yarn when it goes through the resist process.

This is lovely with all the variations of blue.   What a fun gift to untie -- great idea to get the recipient involved!

This is lovely!  Unfortunately, I couldn't see it very well so... I clicked and dragged your images to my desktop and then couble clicked on them to open them in Preview mode (on my Mac) and then I could zoom in!

I am so inspired to try woven shibori for myself!  Thanks so much for sharing!

 Hi everyone:

I'm new to the group, and would like to show a picture of the work done by one of my weaving classes.  I teach three levels of classes at an art center, and two of the classes have completed their first experiments with woven shibori.

I am looking forward to conversations in this forum!

cheers,

Hi there

I signed up for this forum a while back, but have not posted.  It just so happens that I have a lovely Shibori project on my loom as I type.  I started out by painting the  silk and bamboo warp with Pro MX dyes.  It is going to be a plain weave, but then I will draw the shibori weft threads.  I will then do more warp painting.  This project is for making samples for a study group that I am in.  I am actually ahead of schedule on it!  Here is a picture of part of my 9 yard warp.

Great photo of the weaving in progress.  I will look forward to seeing the completed cloth -- with 9 yards, you will be able to do lots of different shibori patterns and painting!

hi,

to answer a long overdue question :(

the sett was 22ends x centimeter. sorry about the delay, as you can see i don't visit very often.

Finally finished the second woven shibori scarf. I love this technique, but it is certainly time consuming!

That is lovely Evelyn!  Have you posted the projects in your person Projects section so we can see all the details?  I would love to feature this in one of our FB posts.  We pick something to feature on the Weavolution fan page in Facebook almost every day.  We usually choose a unique project from the Projects page or a news item of note.

Thanks Claudia!  I have the basics posted for this second scarf, and more info about the same warp on the first scarf.  I have now posted photos of the finished scarf in my projects.
