General Information

Mainely Weavers Study Group

Mainely Weavers Study Group began in the mid 1980's with a group of weavers sharing ideas and resources. As more people became interested, study groups formed and shaped the group as it is now. The group currently has 30 members
and learns by focusing on a theme or topic, mini-workshops, an occasional exhibit of members work, and general support and instruction to both new and experienced weavers.

Meetings are the first Wednesday of each month in Falmouth, Maine at St. Mary the Virgin Church on Route 88, starting at 10:30 AM. The morning is devoted to small group study, or the whole group focused on a single topic, or occasionally a speaker. Bring-Your-Own-Lunch at noon is followed by a Roundtable/Show and Tell for everyone. Coffee and dessert are provided. Includes Yarn Table - double tag all items.

Be sure to confirm location as one or two meetings per year are NOT at the church.

From the South: Come up the Maine Turnpike and take the exit for 295N which goes through Portland. Shortly after you notice Back Cove (lots of water on your left) and pass the Washington Ave exit, take the exit for US Route 1. Follow US Route 1 for about 2 miles, then take the right hand lane which will peel off as Route 88. Go 1/2 mile. Just after the graveyard and on your right, is the entrance for the church.

From the North: Take Route 295 South, to Exit 10 Bucknam Road, Falmouth.  At the light at the end of the exit ramp, turn left.  At the next light, turn right onto Route 1, South.  At the next light, turn left onto Depot Road. At the end of the road, turn right onto Route 88.  The church is two long blocks on your left.  Turn left onto Waites Landing Road, and immediately
right, up into the church parking lot.

Weavers Guild of Boston

Annual Exhibit and Sale, Nov 5-7

Weston, MA

http://www.weaversguildofboston.org/ExhibitSale.htm

This sale and exhibit are worth a special trip from anywhere in New England.  Over 2000 high quality, juried items are for sale, and you can touch them!   Come to buy your holiday gifts (with selections of both Christmas and Judaica items), cards, scarfs, rugs, or to look at and perhaps buy something woven by a friend or in a special technique or interlacement.  With hundreds of scarves alone (wool, bamboo, fine silk, and everything else) there is sure to be something to please, educate, and inspire!  It is like a visit to a museum of modern handweaving.

We will also have an exhibit of the handwoven and fiberart bras "Supports for the CURE" or "Loving Cups" in support of women with breast cancer.  Both humorous and poignant, the bras are woven to lift the spirits of those touched by breast cancer.  Many of the weavers have personal experience with the disease, others have been touched through family and friends.  This kicks off the first round of public showings of this exhibit, which won the FUZ-E award from Handwoven.

Fiber art is made with close attention to detail but often it needs to look good from a distance as well.  Consider the scale of the design and how this relates to the line, value, and the size of each component of the piece.

MORNING CLASSES:  10:00-12:00

Please contact Jean Therkauf <[email protected] > for availability or to assure yourself a spot.  Or, sign up (first come, first served) at the information desk.  If you are not taking a class, visit our excellent library, enjoy the Weavers Helping Weavers EXHIBIT, or chat with friends!

        1) STRUCTURE and DESIGN:  Supplementary Weft Brocading with Bhakti Ziek.  Bring a loom threaded to any structure (twills are preferred, plain weave fine, others ok) and try various kinds of inlay techniques. A few spaces are available.  This class would help with the ratings requirement for embroidery weave.

        2) STRUCTURE and LOOM MODIFICATION:  Doup Leno with Patricia Morton.  Currently full (if you are signed up and can't come, let Jean know so your place can go to someone on the waiting list).

        3) COLOR and DYEING:  Working with Painted Warps and Skeins with Jean Therkauf.  Bring examples if you have them (not required, but helpful).  A few spaces are available.

WEAVERS HELPING WEAVERS:  10:00-12:30
SPECIAL EXHIBIT of Hill Master Weavers (2009) Dorrie Hunt and Anita Thompson.  Come be inspired by two weavers' different interpretations of the same requirements.  The Hill independent weaving requirements were based on the WGB master requirements, so if you are interested in WGB ratings you may find their work particularly informative.  Both Dorrie and Anita do lovely work!

LUNCH and BUSINESS MEETING:  12:00-1:30
Delicious desserts, coffee, and tea provided.

AFTERNOON:  1:30-3:00
From Back Strap to Digital Jacquard: The Weaving of Bhakti Ziek.  Retired textile professor Bhakti Ziek will talk about her forty year textile journey spanning the range of weaving equipment and techniques from simplest to most complex.
