Two heddles, one draft and ...

a liftplan.

I'm still working on how to weave a twill using 2 heddles on the rigid heddle loom. A friend suggested I try using a liftplan but this is only something I have heard about and never used. I know they are used for mechanical dobby looms but would it be helpful with 2 heddles on a rh loom? How?

The lift plan for a double rigid heddle twill will be the order the heddles are lifted and lowered, sometimes on their own, and sometimes together, to create the various sheds. It will not be the same as the treadling or lifting order for a 4 shaft loom because there are no shafts involved, and what it is will depend on what the pattern draft is. I guess this is part of what we will be trying to understand and master.

Enjoy your time off! Theres time enough to worry about this once you get back into harness ( pun intended)!

I had a hard time wrapping my mind around twill using two heddles. Now that I understand it, it seems so simple. I too had to think of it as I would on a bigger loom. The hole is your front heddle makes Shaft 1, the hole in your second heddle makes shaft 2 and the threads that go through the slots on both make shaft 3.

So for a straight twill you thread the following

Thread 1 goes through the slot in the back and the hole in the front

Thread 2 goes through the hole in the back and the slot in the front

Thread 3 goes through a slot in the back and the front.

repeat for the desired width

Using this threading your "lift plan" is:

Lift the front heddle

Lift the back heddle

Lift the last set of threads by either

          a) putting both heddles down or

           b) using a pick up stick behind both heddles (so it can stay in place)

I hope that makes sense! There are a ton of resources on this out there, the most important thing is to find the resource(s) that make sense to you, because there are so many different ways of explaining this!

Thanks Erica, that is helpful. I will be working with 4 shafts but get the gist of what you have said and am looking forward to trying it out.,

What resources did you find? Were they online or in the Davenport books or other boks?
It would be great if you could share those and put them in a separate thread for future reference. I could put that thread at the top of this group so we can always find and refer to it.

Now to get home and give it a try. Stuck in Florida until Tuesday. This was not planned as a one week vacation, just 4 days. Somehow I missed the biggest snowstorm in decades in DC. I knew I should have brought my loom along. <g>
