I have recently acquired a 16 shaft AVL with Dobby 1. Can anyone tell me how weaving double weave works with this loom? My concern is that the "sticky" front beam would pull the bottom layer more than the top.

I weave double layers a lot - but only with fairly fine yarns (cottons up to 16/2, linen up to 16/1). (Maybe I should also tell that I do not weave for double width - my layers are free at the selvages)

Should I want to use something thicker I would probably try to connect the layers from time to time - say every 15 cm or so. I would then choose a yarn in contrasting colour and material (as smooth as possible, of course).

I have done double width fabric on my AVL but it was fairly fine threads - 2/16 cotton warp, 12 linen weft.  I didn't have any particular problems, just pinned the two layers together at the open side.

Using a much thicker yarn might prove to be more problematic.

I'm relatively new to weavingr but recently purchased a 16 shaft FDL with Dobby 1 circa 1986 last year. I thought it might be kinder to my hips.

I tried a double width replica of an ancient Greek cloak for my partner in 8 ply cream wool for my second project on this loom. I wove a tubular sample in a balanced twill for the  first  8' then left a gap and proceeded with a single selvedge on the right hand side. No problems except  I think I would sley the selvedge side a bit more open just for the last inch on the right hand side as there was a slightly visible seam down the middle. However, none of the Greek re-enactors noticed.
