Hello Weavers!

I would like to ask for your ideas and suggestions on a fun project for my weaving kids please...

The project idea.... 7 tote bags that double as seat cushions, made on a 4 shaft/6 treadle loom, out of a machine washable material, that is nice and sturdy, and comes in lots of color choices. The shoulder straps can be made on an inkle loom. I'm thinking I can make the cushions removable - so perhaps the totes will be the only part that's woven by the kids?

The inspiration... We spend a lot of time (about 6 months/year) sitting in ice rinks watching my two boys play hockey, plus the practices and clinics they attend. We also go to a lot of Jr. A games with the kids. These totes/cushions will get used A LOT. Our kids like to bring stuff to keep themselves busy in case they get bored (imagine!), so a tote/cushion is the perfect solution. Did I mention the seats are ice cold!

My kid's are ready to give treadles and shafts a try, and I've acquired a Leclerc Compact 4 shaft which seems like it will work size wise for them.  I would welcome any suggestions on yarns, setts and structure ideas (keeping in mind the weavers are kids). I might want to put on two different gender specific warps, as the boys will probably want to go with Canucks colors, and the girls would probably love a rainbow of colors.

Thanks in advance! ;)

Just suggestions as I am not an expert here - I would try poly-cotton blend like carpet warp,,that is bound to take most any "abuse" and still be washable. For the small ones to do and keeping it simple is plain weave, 1up 1down. If you are going to sew this material I would consider a front or back "pocket" on the bag that will hold a piece of foam (cushion and insulation) and it may be good to enclose the foam in plastic so it does not sponge up any rain or dampness on the bleacher seats. Please make sure you show us pictures when you get through. That same general idea could work good to make this "fishing cushion/carriers" too.

Hey r1mien54, those are great suggestions, thank you! I'm having trouble finding a source for poly-cotton in Canada? I found US sources that will mail order up, and the prices look pretty good, compared to the 100% cotton equivalents. I'll phone on Mon. and see if it's available here. I saw 4/8 in the poly-cotton, but noticed 8/8 and 16/8 in the 100% cottons -those would weave up quite fast?
The arenas we go to are all indoor, so I'm hoping moisture will not be an issue, but that's a great point! I will definately post pics of finished projects - thanks for asking! Well, I'm anxious to decide on the materials and colors, since I will have to mail order them and that takes time. I described the project to the kids last night and there is already a heated debate on who will weave first! :p But since the straps will be on the inkle loom, at least that will keep 2 of them quiet.:D
