Where, oh where, has the summer gone? In the Northern Hemisphere we are looking forward to cooler (hopefully) temps and the changing of the seasons. Southern Hemisphere is getting ready for spring and summer. I am hoping to get back to my looms - at the very least I know I will be weaving in October because I will be taking a workshop with Joanne Hall - woohoo! Will try and get some weaving done before then - maybe get the dish towels hemmed that I wove last spring! Weave on everyone! Tina

I agree its good to keep weaving...Im still working on my new Warp sticks so nothing yet on my new loom, yet... waiting for a video lesson pack too! Need to smooth out two edges on each warp stick(home depot Pine screen molding) then sand each) which will take a while since each stick is 24 inchs long! I got 12 for 5 bucks less then if i had bought them from a loom company and no shipping cost either... thinking of Renaming myself the thrifty weaver LOL (JUST KIDDING)! Again  I have this loom because of a wonderful weaver here on weavolution... my Fairy LOOM Mother... !!

Where has the summer gone? My weaverliness has been mostly in thought and spirit. I finished a wonderful little scarf in July, wound the warp for another and have struggled with the project ever since. I am just not happy with the product. So what to do with 300 ends of blue 10/2 tencel that is by this point probably about 6 yards long. Yes, I know if I had sampled I would not be in this fix. Lesson learned. This morning I reassembled a barn loom from a show this summer. Pulled the finished product off the beam and washed. This project was mostly sampling and hands on demonstration so nothing really savable but I want to play with the fabric woven. I think I will unbeam from the barn loom and move to a contemporary loom to repurpose the warp. Hope everyone is well.

Erica

Loomladi,

If you're not happy with your first plan, why not sample now? 6 yards seems plenty to play around with sampling now, you will have enough for a nice lriject once you decide what you do like!

Good luck

Erica thanks for the idea, I'm more of a pull it off and move on. But I'll think on it. Of course so many projects and not enough looms! I had thought that since tencel has such a great hand, and the blue is beautiful that I might just weave in up in plain weave and then use it as yardage. Afterall, I live in WV and a beautiful blue always comes in handy!

(No, I don't know why they call it that.) You could double the warp over, weave something twice as wide but only three yards long, so less pain if you really hate it.

You could also divide the warp in half, wind a contrasting color and do a shadow weave or color-and-weave effect. That keeps things interesting! The Powell book has lots of ideas in 4 thru 12 shafts, I think.

What about using a JOY (Just Our Yarns) variegated tencel for weft? JOY also has a lot of samples of Bertha Grey Hayes miniature overshot structures woven with their yarns that look spectacular. (Only need 4 shafts.) It's really fun to take a traditional pattern and do a new take on it!

Also, depending on what color blue, you could overdye sections of it in a darker color. Or bleach out color to lighten sections...

There are ALWAYS options ;-)

the activity that is happening here. Congrats Erica for finally getting the Halloweave projects off the loom! I managed to get six more inches of warp threaded tonight before the back started to spasm. So I am halfway through the threading so hopefully can get it finished over the next day or so, get the reed sleyed and this puppy tied on - I am ready to be weaving. On a non-weaving topic we are getting a lovely rain this evening - much needed rain - The dogs are even staying calm in spite of the occasional thunder roll.

Placed a local order for some Softspun worsted wool. I need another blanket. :) This is a softer wool than Heritage, by Briggs and Little. This will be a later project a few weeks away.

I might have to warp up some 7 inch wide simple scarfs for Christmas gifts... I have enough yarn for several but if I make 4 color warp I will run out before I get all my gifts done this year! So one color warp and another contrasting color weft ...maybe. besides I will give me plenty of practice warping up for at least two at a time. Then after Christmas...I will get creative and do some pattern sampling. I was hopeing to start the more creative stuff sooner but Christmas is just to soon... and I am already worryed I will not get done.  Plenty of practice for me!

Sunday,I get to demo weave at The Wool Gathering in Yellow Springs, Ohio. It will be fun, Come on over! It's a big festival and goes all weekend. Stop by The Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati Booth and meet some of us!

Outside of that it's no weavingville here, too much work. After next weds. yes!

As you can see in the (sorry for the double pic) detail of loom photo I hav used the 5inch strips(made on my little brio childsloom) to make a Heddle and accessory wrap for inside my new loom bag.  (Birthday money and such is now gone...lol) a Kromski carry bag would have set me back over 60 bucks..walmart special cost 15 no shipping cost either ;0)  Hey I'm on a budget ...who isn't these days!

Erica

Well not quite, but today has been a day to work on warps!

Oliwer, my personal loom engineer, helped me sort out the friction brake on my Dryad loom. I started warping it top to bottom. I also wound 2" more on my next commission sample.

Erica

OK now I do feel like I'm moving at warp speed. I got two more inches of warp for the sample on the warping board today. This will make 2 warps wound in the last two weeks. OK one is only 30 ends, but still this is some of the best progress since TJ was born.

Any tips for keeping a toddler occupied while you're at the warping board would be greatly appreciated. I love having him in the studio, but he's like a cat to thread! :)

I have fallen in love with the motion of using the warping board Oliver made for me. The motions are like doing Tai Chi and getting warps wound all at the same time. I'm seriously considering selling my wapring mill now. We did essentially down size when we bought our house last year. Between that and the fact that I can not see using the Mill until TJ is much older I'm seriously tempted.

Well that's all for me today. See you all on the flip side.

my rosepath warp on the loom - started sleying the reed this morning, finished this afternoon - tied on after dinner. The treadles are tied up and I am ready to start sampling weft and getting the treadling pattern locked in my mind. Woohoo!

Tina, looking so good, I just want to hop in that pic and weave! Have fun!

ReedGuy

I'll have to find your project page sometime this week. :)

project page yet on this one - will need to get that started later this week!

first towel - having issues with my ppi on the plain weave but other than that - pattern is on the wrong side of the fabric but that's okay - I will switch out the tie up on the next towel. Feels good to be weaving again!

I got my Mullarkey tablet weaving loom a couple of weeks ago an finally got it warped up.  I think I shall name it "The Thief of Time."

I've decided to do Ram's Harns variations until I can do them in my sleep, I think.  This is the latest, in my new favorite Sulky 12 wt cotton.

Rosearbor,

Your Ram's Horn Variation is just Glorious! Plus I love the name of your loom. I'm still working on a name for mine!

Bad news for me. Wrist aggravation. Wove too long at the demo. It was so much fun, I didn't realize I was messing it up. Soooo, I need to rest it for a while, no fun:(

Weavejoyforall

I have to say your Rams horn is just lovley and its a tribute to your weaving inclinations... Hope my first project on my new loom gos half as well!!  still working on getting a few more things to start. I'm still a little nervous about useing the warping board since this will be my first atempt at it.  I sure I will overcome this..soon...Christmas is comming and I want to make gifts (scarfs) for my grand neices and nephews!!! I have 7 that are at an age to ware nearly adults size scarfs... Again, Bravo Rosearbor! I also love the colors !!

OK, not so much weaving for me last week. Again.

However, BIG thanks to Deb McClintock (TX), Vicky Everett (NJ) and Nora McDonald (GTA) for recommending the Toronto Textile Museum, Romni Wool, and Lettuce Knit when I was in Canada. I was smitten with Toronto, so I MUST go back. So smitten — I didn't get to weave until I was at YYZ (the airport) on Sunday morning.

The Guatemalan band exhibit at the Textile Museum:

Romni Wools bargin basement of coned yarn. (Yes, I bought a cone.)

A very small fraction of Romni Wools knitting yarns. (The place was a labyrinth!)

Thanks for the nice comment, and take care of that wrist!!

sally orgren

Is that an old textile, or woven by you?

rosearbor (not verified)

Thanks for the nice comments on my Rams Horn band, and oh boy, Sally!  What a fun time.  I really wish I could see the Guatemalan bands.  Thanks for sharing all these great photos of your travels- so we can enjoy vicariously.

The textile under my loom is one of the overshot placemats that I got at MDS&W from the National Museum of the American Coverlet booth.  Check them out next year, or better yet- visit them in Bedford, PA!

photos Sally - thanks for sharing - you go to the most interesting places.

Gee Whiz, My brother lives in Toronto, he's into paintings and it's always, Oh, Cath, we have to go to this Gallery. but now it's going to be Oh, Jeff, we have to go to this Museum and YARN STORE LOL. The Museum he'll get into:) I love Toronto!

Weavejoyforall

Cathie... Great excuse to get him into a yarn shop !  lol being a bit of an artist myself (watercolor ) I know how gallerys draw me in...but now..well I would find it hard to chose which I wanted to go first too as well. LOL

Rosearbor, thanks for the concern but I am waring  my wrist support band when ever i do any work that is tough on my wrist ..no more weave stoping problems for me . I hope!

Found some old stick shuttles at a Tag sale got 4 for just a few bucks...anyone have any Ideas about finishing them...they seem to have been stained dark red brown at some time in their 50 or so years of use.The lady who sold them to me said they belonged to an older member of her family she was not at all sure when they were made or bought. They look as if they might have been blanched by the sun at one time as well but they are not warped by heat but are still quite flat. I sanded them down and the stain seems to be most of the way through the wood. They might be pine.   Does anyone know if paste wax is a good idea ? (not a woodworker here!)

This weekend was/is their Coverlet College.  I am SO VERY VERY disappointed that I was not able to attend.  A visit to Bedford is a MUST for anyone interested in coverlets!

It was slow to get going but I am finishing out the month strong.  Old barn loom is now assembled and in use.  It has been sitting on the porch since July, but I've reset the warp it had and will weave a sample this evening.  I'm trying to create some babybed bedspreads for a local woodworking group.  The first sample finished a little too small, so I'm hoping that adjusting the sett and putting in some skips will work.  Wish me luck.

added a Halloweave 2013 group - The Active Arachnids - the challenge is to actually WEAVE everyday - at least a pick or two - for the month of October. Come on over and join the fun as we weave our webs.

Tina, The Tea Towels look great, and the doubling weft is doing the trick. How do you like working with the double bobbin shuttle? Love the Avatar, good luck with your Halloweave Group! I would join you but travelling a lot in October. So I'll have fun making it a daily practice to look from my I-pad:)

so far working with the double shuttle is okay - It takes some getting used to but so far so good.

I picked up a loom from the village we demonstrate at in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area on Friday, so I could dress the loom in preparation for Millbrook Days next weekend. (So finally, a bit of weaving in my life again!)

Sadly, if we have a government shut down, I am unsure what will happen to the event. Two months ago, the NPS appealed to the non-profit society connected to the village to fund some key aspects of the event due to long-term federal cuts. They agreed. The society could probably run the event with their own volunteers, but I don't know if anyone will be allowed into the park. The society has already made the expenditures, so if the event is cancelled, they are left holding the bag. No need to say how frustrating this would be. Fingers and toes crossed on this one — I would like to see the event go as planned.

The project is 6 yards of cotton dishtowels. About 500 ends of 8/2, sett at 24 epi. Since I am using 8 shuttles on another warp at the current time, I had to dig this double bobbin shuttle out the loom bench just to test this warp!

I'm running a sample warp of 16/2 natural hemp.  I ran 150 ends about 2 yards long.  I just want to play with the sett for yardage for a shirt.  Probably just plain weave, but may a simple twill just for some variety. Has anyone worked with hemp before?
