Yes we need a new thread. The other was getting lengthy scrolling down through. :D LOL

I finally wove my Christmas towel warp off the loom!  (It was supposed to be done by Thanksgiving weekend.)  Ah well, looks like I have a headstart on gifts for next Christmas.  Happy New Year!

Claudia Segal (not verified)

Congrats Monica!  Good way to start the New Year.

Happy New Year all!  Hope it's a weaverly filled one and I look forward to your posts on those days I am frustrated.

I am heading off to wind a warp for the alpaca/silk shawl kit I bought in Nov as a potential Christmas present.  My friend now knows it's coming and won't mind if it's late.  Wish me luck!

Claudia

a little time this morning working on a table runner.Am now getting ready to go to the movies and then will resume weaving when I get home. Happy New Year's all

Grethe

Has sent proposals for dishtowels for my sister, waiting for her to make a decision. Tomorrow I'll make a warp for my sample.

Walkingquail

I am being lazy today by not getting dressed! But I have trimmed the fringe on the two huck lace Jaggerspun scarves I made in December. I have been watching you tube weaving videos with my cat sleeping in my lap the last 45 mintues or so. I think the next project will be a series of table runners in cotton. I am trying to accumulate some stock so I can sell weavings instead of paintings this year at a few fairs and open studios.

ReedGuy

Another forum I am member at, the owner is a very good artist. Not just painting, but wood burning art. He also does custom websites. Not too bad for a fella that sawed lumber for 25 years. ;)

Tencel scarf off the loom and finished today. I was going to originally use linen for the weft, but I didn't like the color. Hence my trip to my lys. I picked up some 10/2 merc pistachio cotton. There is some texture with the two different fibers that I really like. Will post some pics soon. Next on my list are some chenille scarves for my nieces. I never realized they liked my weaving. It was nice to hear they wanted scarves. Happy weaving, C

I'm enjoying the sunshine and warmth (as compared to back home in WV) of North Myrtle Beach.  Skeined off, and washed another 1800 yards of wool.  Most is dry and will get balled tomorrow.  I think I've mentioned that the wool has been around awhile and by skeinging and washing I can check it over fairly quickly. So far, it has been excellent.    There is something magical about sitting by an open patio door and weaving with the surf in the background.  Heading to bed soon, I think I'll finish my 8th potholder of the day first.  My goal is to finish this warp tomorrow (another 8 potholders) and warp with wool for for an order on Thursday.  Unfortunately, back to reality on Friday or Saturday.  It's great to see most everyone is being productive.  Happy New Year All!

When I visit the folks in a few days I'm going to look at some 10/2 cotton my mom picked up at Marden's. A buck a spool, but there is only 300-400 yards each. I did the math and it's still cheaper than anywhere. If it's good stuff I would get a bunch of white. They probably don't have much for colors. But most of my warps in cotton are white. :)

Washed the Tea towels and they are all ready to be hemmed. Warped the small mirrix yesterday to get ready for the Tapestry Diary. Today packing for my trip. A combo of seeing my father in B.C. Who eloped!!!!! He and his new wife are having a wedding celebration in Victoria, where they live. They're 88 & 85. Then off to Kathe Todd-hooker's for three days of Tapestry instruction. So excited! So I'm taking some theory books with me to work on the airplane, network drafting, so I can get something on the Multishaft when I get home , as well as a few tea towels to hem:)

endorph

and safe trip Cathie - Congrats on the wedding of your father - that is funny - my mom is 88 and I can see her doing something like that!

ReedGuy

My grandmother wouldn't. Oh no. She was mad at her mother when her dad died and she got remarried. It was taboo. LOL  I know, crazy thinking.

I'm glad your old man remarried, great stuff. :)

Artistry

Thanks Tina and ReedGuy, yeah, I think it's great he remarried:)

Cheryl'B

Have a great trip. Enjoy your visit with your father! Have a wonderful time in class. My dream is to one day attend a weaving retreat.

loomyladi (not verified)

That's wonderful. I have a friend who is 81 and how I wish she would indulge. She would smile so much more if she let someone into her life. Although her grandaughters and I convinced her to watch Magic Mike today. She did think that they were "quite athletic." LOL. She was knitting, grandaughters were knitting and crocheting, and I was balling - the total for the week is 5800 yards of wool skeined, washed, dried, and balled for use. There is still about 5 lbs of wool on the cones that I need to process yet. This wool is destined for the inkle loom. I also wove another 6 pot holders. Unfortunately I ran out of tabby weft. There is probably only another 3 left on the warp. Ahhh well, I guess I just might finish the wool afterall. We are talking about beginning the migration north tomorrow. Back to the cold & snow, but it just may include a fiber detour!

A few more inches to weave on a log cabin scarf, then time to find something else to weave.  I've got lots of merino wool to be woven into scarves, but am still waiting to get the warp from WEBS.  Do they always take a long time to ship an order, or is it just because of the holidays?  I asked this question in the Weaving forum, but I'm wondering if Tencel is suitable for M's and O's?

ReedGuy

Take this for what it is Monica, since it old literature and Tencel didn't exist. But, Worst's book says cotton warp and linen weft 20/2. Talking about Kentucky M's and O's.

endorph

runner number two on the current warp - these are more like runnerettes - I needed shorter runners for a couple of tables at work. Got about three inches in and realized I needed a floating selvedge for this variation - probably could have used one on the first variation as well but managed without - so unwove the few inches I had and added the floating selvedge. Now getting ready to weave a bit more this evening.

Cheryl'B

and started weaving two chenille scarves.

Monica Bellas (not verified)

Thanks, ReedGuy.  I've decided to take the plunge and give it a go -- if it doesn't work withTencel, at least I've learned something!  :)

ReedGuy

Threading my read now. 1200 ends don't sound like much, but that's 24 inches at 48 epi for a double weave tube in 10/2 cotton which is pretty fine and tangly. I worked at the heddles in spirts over 3 days. I'm hoping the reverse panel comes though on the back half as this is not one faced weave like on a blanket. :)

Walkingquail

I am still unweaving that shawl but almost there! I think I'll dress it onto the loom with some lark's head ties to extend it or it will be too short since part of the loom waste has already been cut off. The handpainted yarn is indeed too good to waste. Cathie have fun in your tapestry class. My regular tapestry class starts up again next week and looking forward to it. My learning curve for tapestry has been much steeper than regular weaving but it could be that my cartoons are too complicated and I want the tapestries to look like my paintings! But the learning is fun anyway.Cheryl B. you must treat yourself to a weaving retreat some year, that's how I got hooked on weaving! Ay Ghost Ranch with Suzanne Halvorson. Best thing I ever did for myself next to marrying a good guy.

ReedGuy

I have begun weaving on my pillow covers tonight. Surprised to see no errors so far. Of course I sectioned off 6 ends at a time and checked off ones done as I went. You pretty well have to because the threading and treadling is not like a twill, it's all over the map. :) Will have a photo soon. The draft is under my username for "Braddocks Defeat", an old colonial weave. I don't know if I mentioned it above.

endorph

my Swedish lace table runnerettes this morning. Also been playing on my potholder loom.

ReedGuy

The lace weave looks great and the pot holders sure look like they will fit the bill. :)

Cheryl'B

I love the runners. Got a pot holder kit for my grand niece. Will have to play with that with her, they look like fun. As for the weaving retreat, I think I will save for that for next year. Short term goal. Have one scarf done and weaving the second. While I like warping once for two scarves, I miss taking the first one off and finishing it. Still new to weaving, I get a kick out of getting the whole thing done before starting a new project. It's a good trade off though.

Grethe

I have startet to weave my crepe samples. I chose to use the Noro yarn for warp, thats not a good idea, it's not strong enough, I have had 3 broken treads and I'm sure that they were not the last. I'm trying different yarn and colors for weft. I also use  a variety of tie-ups.

ReedGuy

Can't wait to see your crepe. There are a number of styles I see in "Warp and Weft". I wove a hat in crepe with wool singles, which is not strong either because it's not plied. But with some tenderness I had little trouble. ;)

endorph

the green stash warp off the loom and wet finished. Currently it is drying - will try and get pictures tomorrow - I will have one decent sized scarf and then some left over from the warp - we'll see what that becomes. NOw I am sitting here with two naked looms - what to do, what to do. . . .

Walkingquail

I sewed a carrying bag for my tapestry loom and realized how much I have forgotten about sewing construction! Oh well, I think the bag will protect the warp and allow me a free hand to carry my other necessities to and from class which starts up again tomorrow. We do other weaving in the class too if the looms are portable. I'd better bring the scarves I wove on my floor loom as an  explanation as to why my tapestry from last term is still incomplete!

endorph

part of the evening sorting through a bag full of pot holder loopers. Separatin them into individual color groups to make finding what I want easier. I am going to make enough potholders to sew together into a rug for the bathroom.

Monica Bellas (not verified)

Endorph, what a great idea!  I've currently got two scarves needing twisted fringe and loooots of Christmas towels that need to be hemmed.  I sometimes wish that sewing wasn't part of weaving!

Cheryl'B

and started warping for a baby blanket.  I'm thinking I will do a shadow weave.  Have 415 ends warped, another 200 or so to go.

Grethe

I have wetfinished the samples. Now I'have to decide which yarn to use for my project.

endorph

I am hoping to get projects reay to go on both looms this weekend - well at least that is the plan we'll what happens when life gets in the way!

Claudia Segal (not verified)

Still threading the Julia for the alpaca/silk shawl.  I found a couple of broken threads and am hoping I found them all.  200 threads done, 304 to go!  Slow and steady gets it done.

I spent most of yesterday working on a project for the Spinning & Weaving Group which is now part of TNNA. The event has a soft launch at the Winter Show in early Feb.  The event is focused on spinning but the group supports retail shops, designers, and any business that sells equipment and yarn for spinning and weaving.  I am very excited about the event and hope, if you are a spinner, that you will watch for the details between now and June 2013.  The event is name SpinZilla!

Back to my threading today!

Fly home today. Had 3 very productive , very long days with Kathe Todd- Hooker. she and I tackled weaving a rose which I had photographed and got about half way through. We wove 10 hours a day! I will post a pic to this thread when I get back, if I can figure out how! BTW, the senior Newlyweds are adorable!

sally orgren

I have been work-working, and in my free time, working on UFO's, so I have not been nearly as productive as you all!

So, does anyone have any suggestions for me regarding finishing these double woven wire boxes? I need to attach the lids/bottoms to each box. I have left extra warp to do so, but I am not real experienced in working with wire. I will say it IS pretty flexible wire, and yes, I have a needle nose pliers.

I also need to come up with a decorative way to finish the two corners of the box where the warp remains. Just curl them around at small rod? Something else?? (I don't want them to poke someone when picking up the box. Suggestions much appreciated!

P.S. Cathie, your dad's story is fantastic—good for them both!)

ReedGuy

Grethe, your crepe that you chose looks great. I find the texture and the way the colors come through quite unique. I guess it's suppose to be. I find it just about hides the warps in any that I have woven, but I'm just a novice. I wove one sampe that hid the warps on the back and the front. I find crepe a lot more stretchy than other weaves, and I guess it's suppose to be. Anyway, it's a fun weave. :)

Cathie, yay for your dad and new mom. :)

Wow wire weave. I noticed a post in another section, it musta been yours I guess Sally. I wouldn't have a clue about what to do next. It's a lot different though, when one has it in their hands. :)

ReedGuy

Made a big hull at Mardens with 12,000 yards of merc cotton.

Do'n the boot scoot'n boogie around the apple tree.

Monica Bellas (not verified)

Reed Guy, you're going to be very busy!

ReedGuy

I got mostly white because their selection in color is limited. But it worked out to be about $1.25 a thousand for most and $3 a thousand on others because of quantity per spool. And it's good cotton. I use white the most. One good sized bedspread I have planned would use about 10,000 yards. ;) It's all 10/2.

Artistry

Sally I wish I could help you with your wire boxes, they're beautiful, I'm coming up empty handed though!

a bit to get back to the rhythm I was in before the holidays. Classes start up again, the house sure could use a vacuuming, you know how it is! I warped that old shawl and I am trying out a few different weft variations. I think I have it figured out and will tackle it anew tomorrow as I am just too weary right now. I don't have as much warp to play with as usual since this shawl was woven once before and I lost some of the loom waste, so I took out all my sample threads. Hopefully the unweaving is finished and this project will move forward from now on. Grethe, your samples all look wonderful, how will you choose??

Artistry

Grethe your colors are beautiful! Can't wait until your next set of samples or piece! Walkingquail, I think that the old shawl will become a new beautiful shawl tomorrow. The last few days, every day since I got home, has been working on the Tapestry Diary of the rose. I still have those tea towels to hem and paper work , hmmmm.

ReedGuy

Nice patterns in your samples Grethe. One is kinda like tire tracks. :)
