Hello,

I'm hoping the group can help me with two questions about a large Macomber loom that I purchased.

For starters, it has a strange, thin, single iron "arm" sticking out from the back of the loom and I can't figure out what it is. It's the only one, and doesn't appear to be attached to anything on one end, so I'm not sure of its purpose.

Second, there appears to be a second beam (equal to the front beam in size) with some "claws" on both ends that I'm also confused about. It slides onto the front beam, but I can't see the purpose. As is, the loom appears to be good to go, but I thought I would inquire about these two parts. 

The loom came in peices, so I've put it together myself. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance:)

The piece with the prongs does not go on the breast beam.  It goes on the back beam, and separates two warps when using two warp beams.

will help. I am guessing the metal piece sticking out the back is part of the lamm depressor, pictured below.

Yes, the mystery part is definately a lamm depressor. However, it looks like it isn't complete.

My next question would be, is it absolutely necessary? I'm only working with four shafts and although I haven't woven on the loom just yet, the treadles seem to easily lift the shafts.

It locks the lamms down when putting on the hooks. Play with your loom and see how it goes.
