So I love multi colored prepped tops/roving. I have spun them up the same way I would undyed fibre and used fractal spinning. What other ways do you all spin multicolored tops/roving.

Unfortunately, I recently bought 2 rovings that I think are unspinable. They were intended for felting, which is what I may well use it for. Any advice on that would be appreciated as well.

I'm not an expert but I had the same problem with a fine merino this summer/fall but once the house dried out from winter heating and the humidity of the summer was gone I've had no problem. I also try to hold it like a baby bird while spinning.

dyed tops/roving I usually spin them fractally but some times also just spin them randomly and see what happens. You can also divide them by colors - so if you have a roving that is red, yellow and blue, you separate all the yellow, all the red, all the blue then spin them either alone or one color right after the other, etc. you will usually end up with little pops of the other colors but. . . Did that make sense? I recently downloaded a video that gives several different ways to spin prepared tops / roving.

Edited to add - I have also taken the tops and carded them randomly to make a more heathered looking yarn.

What is spinning fractally?

is a method of dividing your dyed braid to get color blocks. You divide your braid in half lengthwise. One half you spin as is the second half you split again into three or four lengths and spin them end to end. Then when you ply you wil get some areas of barber poling but also areas that are matched colorwise. You can probably get a better explanation if you google it! Smile

I had the same problem once...I borrowed combs and "tackled it"....results were not perfect, but it made it spinnable (on my supported spindle)...no guarantees, but it is better than getting rid of it...I hope it works out for you..?
