Rhinebeck is here!!  Who's going?  If you are going, what do you hope to get to it out of it?

If you aren't going, why?

I can't go this year.  Why?  NY is a long way away and I just got back from Peru.  Claudia will be there though - lucky woman!

If I had been able to go, my main goal would have been to meet other weavers and knitters.  Secondarily, I find the shows are a great way to see new products and get a close up view and feel of fibers I've been curious about.

Kristina, Rhienebeck, NY is one of the largest sheep and wool shows in the US. People come from all over the world to buy breeding stock.Of course weavers, spinners and knitters come to buy and sell their wares You can read all about it here.  http://www.sheepandwool.com/ Once you get outside of NYC you are in farm country. NY state is still one of the largest dairy states in the US.

Hi Kristina,

We are always looking for oppportunities for Weavolution members to get together.  Rhinebeck is an extremely popular, large show that occurs every October.

Is there any fiber show you attend or have heard about in your part of Germany?  We are on the lookout for shows anywhere Weavolutionaries gather.

Claudia, Weavolution co-founder

Packing the old woolies for Rhinebeck, weather prediction is cold, possible snow/rain mixture.

I am going to meet weavers.  Some who may have heard of Weavolution and some who may not have.

I am also going to buy yarn!!  I have a consignment for a poncho.

And, finally, I am going because in Maryland there is this ongoing discussion of which is the better show, Maryland Sheep and Wool festival (MSWF) or Rhinebeck, which is referred to only by its location.  The real name is Dutchess County Sheep and Wool Festival and the fairgrounds are located in Rhinebeck which is a sleepy little town on the Hudson River north of New York City.

As a born and bread New Yorker, I might vote for Rhinebeck but I am opposed to paying for a festival only to go and spend money there.  MSWF is always free, score one point for Maryland.

I'll be reporting back to y'all on Monday including pictures, through the snow flakes.

Wish me luck.

They generally charge admission for craft shows here in Australia now - I agree it should not happen - but if they didn't our stall fees would go up horribly. Its to do with Public Liability insurance - its basically wiped out most free events.

 Hi Claudia,

yes there is a big exhibition called" Creativa" in Dortmund

http://westfalenhallen.de/messen/creativa/49.php,

this is about all kinds of handycraft and good for the weavers. Ashford, Louet ..  and the german yarn sellers will be there.

Special for the  weavers there is a forum called " weben+" ( weaving+) at Kukate.

http://www.webenplus.de/?mod=24

Kukate is a centre for manual work  . There you  can do weavingclasses and they  have meeting - i think- every fourth year. There you can find exhibitions, workshops ,sellers and have the opportunity to meet other weavers. I´ve never been there, because it`s too far away  And I do not like their attitude  that, they want to seperate traditional and advanted craft  from hobbyweavers. It`s typical german, that mainly counts, what is learned in a special education to get a profession by the weavers guild.  I understand the wish to preserve craft, but there are so many  weavers in Germany like me learning in autodidactic manner, at workshops with literatur and in networks like weavolution - and I do not feel be welcome there. But I have only found little groups at Yahoo or so.

But Fiber festivals as your Rhinebeck we do not have - as i know . I think it`s because sheeps in Germany  in principal are domesticated for care of the landscape and for the meat - not for the wool.

HI yall, There is also the Southern Animal Fiber Fair (SAFF)  http://www.saffsite.org/dnn/Default.aspx next week in Asheville, NC. Admission $3, under 13 free. Cheryl (my wife) and her friend are going on Friday.

Claudia, it looks like you are not going to see the "white" stuff, the weather is a little warm, light rain is in your forecast. You could cross the river and go a little higher up and get to see a little snow in the Catskill Mts or you could go to PA and see lots of the white stuff. Hope you get to meet lots of weavers.

Michael

PS I had a sister that lived across the river from Reinebeck in Kingston, NY she moved to San Diego, CA years ago.
