My Corner Of The World - February 2012 Because of the popularity of this thread, we'll start a new thread each month! The idea is to tell us what is going on in your corner of the world. It does not have to be weaving related, but it could be. Please include a picture when you add your post. Weavers are very visual people. Please remember to downsize your photo before uploading. Be sure to tell us where you are (city, state/province, country?) This forum has members internationally. Have a good day! It's February in Algeria, Chile, Finland, Iran, Libya, Monaco, New Zealand, Oman, and Zimbabwe! Time for a new edition of "My Corner Of The World!" Have a joyful day! Franco Rios Sacramento, Calif, USA

Unseasonably warm weather continues here in southeast Arkansas.  We are still waiting for winter to hit, although sometimes it never does.  The daffodils are showing strong and the baby sheep are bouncing around their mommas.  I even have a hen gone broody.

humid this morning in Central Texas - supposed to be 75 today - that is outrageous for February. This is following a temperature of 29 Sunday morning. Everyone is suffering from colds and allergies at the same time! Had heavy fog in spots driving into work this morning. The daffodils and hyacinths are poking their heads up in the front planting bed. . . Hoping for sunshine later today.

I wove this little Atwater draft overshot sampler (Lover's Knot and Whig Rose) on a Structo 240-4 (the little metal 8" loom, vintage 1950) with the original 20/2 cotton on spools. Although I hemstitched the edges on the loom, I wanted to be sure they would hold during the washing process. So I used my mother's Singer 221 (vintage 1952?) for a final stitching.

This is coming to you from New Jersey, but circa early 1950's. ;-)

We were warned by the weather forcast:"a Siberian coldfront is coming". And indeed this morning it was -6°C Brrr The next night will have even lower temperature: -8  to - 12 and a vigorous wind. I know  for norderly and more inland countries this isn't such a big deal. But for Belgium ,that has mostly a mild sea influenced climat it is really cold. So no weaving to be done for the next week, perhaps i can do some spinning near the woodstove that gives us some suplimentary heating in these cold days.

greetings

Here's a photo of members of the Weavers Guild of Rhode Island during a Saturday tour at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), exploring the school's industrial Jacquard loom.  There's something about a 7,600 thread warp that's a little intimidating!

Here's what they're looking up at - the control unit.  Each pink cord attaches to one warp thread, lifing it as required for the weave structure.

That's a pretty impressive dobby don't you think?

laurafry

In my corner of the world I have a visiting weaver.  :)  No weavng today, but perhaps tomorrow?  Or maybe just lots of talking about weaving?

cheers,

Laura

In Indianapolis, we're just finishing hosting the Super Bowl.  The weather has been fantastic -- unseasonably warm and not much precipitation.  It's been a real boon for the city.

My weaving is going in fits and starts.  I'm having to redo my towel warp because the off-white stripes are having a different takeup from other stripes.

I'm trying to take another step in learning to design, but am still not sure how to proceed designing in doubleweave.  I think I just need to print some graph paper and play around and see  how much I can do via loom control vs pick-up.

And I have another weaving class to look forward to next week -- Daryl Lancaster's class Weaving a Memory.

I wanted to be a Rhode Island weaver on Saturday! Wow.

Sally - what a great field trip! Grey and gloomy in my neighborhood this morning. A cool front has moved in so the temps are more "normal" for February. We have had a warm winter so far. . .

sally orgren

I warped two floor looms with 8 yards apiece and threaded 1,200 heddles this weekend. It just dawned on me that today is the 7th of February (which is normally a short month, but one day longer this year), and that means I need to weave at least 3/4 of a yard *per day* to finish both warps by March 1st. I work full time and have some travel scheduled, so we'll see...

here in southeast Arkansas this morning. Although not cold to some, temperatures hovering at the freezing point with the  wind blowing is enough to make feeding the chickens a chore.  This new old house is drafty and the wind makes it that much worse.  I wish I had a fireplace or woodstove to back up to.

Jen

31 degrees in Central Texas this morning with a brisk wind. But the skies are clear and it looks to be a beautiful day. I think I might build a fire in the fireplace and move the loom to the living room to weave and enjoy the fire.

After a week of mid 70s F. with trees sprouting, azaleas and my lemon tree having new blooms (6 weeks tooo early) it has not gotten above 58 all day. The weather forcast is for a hard freeze with 4 plus hours or more of below 25F tonight and low 20s to upper teens tomorrow night. Brrrrrr - it`s so much nicer when that cold jet stream will stay about the 40 degree north latitude line. We, (Jacksonville Weavers Guild) had another great meeting this morning. Everyone had some great work for their "show & tell" followed by a workshop class on Colorways. I dressed out in my kilt since last month many asked me to model it for them.

laurafry

My company left yesterday - the house is very quiet!  Managed to weave a bit on a pretty warp.  Might finish it off tomorrow.

endorph

that warp is lovely. Waht will this end up being? Tina

laurafry

Hi Tina, in actual fact the warp is for my next publication with samples but the cloth is intended for kitchen towels.  The warp is 2/8 cotton with a weft of a cotton boucle.  :)  (the 'lines' you can see in the weft are the cut lines so make cutting the samples easier)

cheers,

Laura (hoping to have this all ready by the end of May - gotta love deadlines!)

endorph

the weft looked like a cotton boucle. I have some towels planned using a cotton boucle for weft. Your projects always seem to have great color combinations. I find them inspiring. Winter showed up in central Texas this weekend. We had a hard freeze this morning - only 27 out when I left for church and a nasty north wind. Almost reminded me of home (Wyoming). I never thought I'd miss winter but I do! Tina

laurafry

I'm lucky in that I can get cotton boucle (unmerc) in a huge variety of colours but I had the white on hand so went with that.  :)  The weather here is above freezing and lightly raining.  Not nice as it will be sure to freeze at night.  :(  Last week we had some lovely sunny days but they seem to have disappeared for now.  :}

cheers,

Laura

but it sure doesn't feel like it! Even when it's close to normal temps, there's been almost no snow this year.

I'm dithering about buying a loom. I would love the flexibility of a four or eight shaft loom, but I can't afford a floor loom beyond a Wolf Pup, not to mention that I live in a mobile home with that has five people, two parrots, and a dog, so we're crowded! OTOH, I've been admiring the 32" Kromski harp for quite a while, and even with a stand it's more in my budget line. I can't decide between the Wolf Pup and the Kromski with a couple of extra heddles...decisions, decisions..

— not even photo-worthy. > I want to move to CA! <

On the plus side, I am cranking through my 16 yards of warp in the evenings. I am nearly finished with the green towels for the Weavo exchange (coordinated by Yarnfloozie and due March 1).

I am about 2.5 yards into the TEDIOUS, 3 shuttle, 30 epi, black, white, + one color yardage. Currently it is taking me about 2 hours to weave 1/2 yard on that warp. I hope to get faster as I proceed.

Dishtowels-

Below is my solution for weaving with 3 shuttles simultaneously. I park the two "resting" shuttles nose-up on top of the castle, so the threads are positioned perfectly for over-under of the active weft/shuttle when entering and exiting the shed. The unused wefts travel up each selvedge. A half pattern repeat is 64 pics. (What was I thinking when I designed this?)

laurafry

Sally your cloth looks grand!  Sometimes we just do these things because we must.  :)

My mother's surgery yesterday went well - now to see how she has come through it.  I managed to beam another warp yesterday - it has two colours in the warp and weft.  My solution to the 'carrying yarn up the side' is a bit different.  I'll be making a fringe on all four sides so the inactive yarn doesn't matter.  :)

This is Melisa. Her Ashford was in a corner for 10 years. She brought it to our Saturday Guild meeting and we helped her install a new drive band, brake band, and adjust tension for spinning. in the 80s the past two days a cold north wind blew in last night and out temps have returned to nearer normal for this time of the year. The daffodils are blooming and it is starting to look like spring - not that we've had winter here in Texas but. . .

We are back to winter with a snow advisory.  Fortunately it's only snowing lightly - but it looks set to go on all day.  The long range forecast says sunny weather on Tuesday when I hit the highway heading for Seattle area.  Here's hoping they are right and I have good driving conditions.  :)

winter has arrived in Michigan! About four inches of snow fell today.

Of course, this still leaves us about twenty inches short for the year so far...

The wind blew pretty hard most of the day today, so, I just stayed in and finished a scarf I was working on.  Have found that I really love the shadow twill patterns.  This evening I'm measuring out the warp for a new shawl in black and white.

Would post a picture, but can't seem to get it to load.

Out in Santa Clara, Ca working at Stitches West for Habu. A nice break from 88 degrees in Texas. Busy market, haven't had time to get out and look at all the pretty yarn & equipment BUT I can always hope for a lull in the crowds. And my other option is to just shop Habu! http://www.knittinguniverse.com/stitches/west

several 80 degree days this morning is a brisk 28 here in Central Texas - a good morning to stay inside and warp the loom!

The University of Georgia, Athens (UGA) held a fashion week this past week in Athens, GA.

 http://www.fcs.uga.edu/college/news.php?id=198

Three fashion shows, "Destination: Spring break", African night, "Earth, Wind & Fire" and one fashion show at the Georgia State Botanical Garden which Cheryl and I want to last night: "Where the wild things are" Plus talks and exhibitions during the week. This is the first year when all the different groups got together and had their show the same week. I am going to talk to UGA about a hand woven show next year.

On the weather side; on Thursday it was in the low 80s and yesterday it was 69f at 6am with a thunderstorm, later that morning there was a tornado about 9 miles NE of us. Cheryl said some cattle and horses were killed. By the time the above show started the weather had settled down.

laurafry

Wow - 88 degrees in February?  So what should I expect for temps near Houston TX in September????

cheers,

Laura

endorph

you could expect nice temps in the 70s or 80s or temps in the 100s - September in Texas can be most anything. And then there is the humidity. . . It has turned into a beuatiful day here in Waco - started at 28 now in the low 50s and sunny - gorgeous!

steve104c (not verified)

LauraFry, I live NW of Houston ( born in Houston-- Never get used to the hot humid weather). Where in Houston are you?  Sept. weather is unpredicable. Temp. can be 90-100's w/ 90+ humidity. Being on the gulf coast,  we have tropical type weather.  If you blink you can miss winter. We don't get cooler weather until late Oct to early Nov. We are finally out of the drought in the Houston area. Last Sept. we were about 26"+ behind in rain. I am on 2.2 ac. and lost over 2 doz. trees. Had to cut down 14, 20" dia+ trees that were close to the house. They are predicting a drought again this year.  We have 4 seasons,  almost summer--summer--hot--really hot..........Steve.

laurafry

I'll be teaching for the Navasota (I think I spelled that right) guild, two hours away from Houston but not sure which direction.  :)

cheers,

Laura

where we have almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction for seasons....  :^)

Weather has been changing in North Florida most lately warmer than normal (upper 70s) a lot of strong wind yesterday with passing showers so another "cold front" is on its way. I went out this morning in 50 degrees and spent most of the day at North Florida Scottish Games [wearing my hand woven kilt] and it warmed up to 64 and we are forcast to drop to 38 tonight. Fun time and BIG crowd but now I am ready for a quiet evening.

debmcclintock

Hey Laura, my guess for Navasota is way more hot than cool. When it gets closer check the weather. A Philly friend came down to the Austin area in late Sept and we were still pushing the high 90's. Navasota won't be much different AND they have way higher humidity. Short sleeves and cotton and bring a shawl for the ac inside. Deb Mc (still working Stiches West- busssssy day!)
