Hi Karren and all,

Would you say it would be impossible to start the color mixing excercise before we have proberly labeled our solid colors? I have to wait for poster to feel confident before notation on my cards.

If it is possible to start mixing, I'm not really sure where to begin! This is my theory - if it's flawed would you kindly show me the way?

Let's say we're doing the 5Y in the color chart -

1. Looking at it I'd say it's probably going to be ...at least this is where i'd start

Yellow/, value of 5/, chroma of 12

2. I'd measure my yarn and multiply that by the dos (ex. 5.0 x 2.5) = 12.5 grams of dye

3. Now i would take a mixture of Sun Yellow and add a little bit of Gold (ex. 80% Sun Yellow + 20% Mustard) = 10g Sun Yellow + 2.5g of Mustard

If it's not that, I label it according to the chart and determine which way it's falling which could be: these are the things i adjust?

1) too much red from the mustard - add less mustard

2) too high a DOS (lower the dos to How do i know?) THIS IS MY BIG STUMBLING BLOCK

it seems like it's a shot in the dark? maybe i'll get lucky? or should i know how to be more specific at this part of the class?

Could you walk us through how you'd approach this particular chip and how you'd trouble shooot? I know it's asking alot, but i need a bit more help. (i'm hyperventalating again!)

Thank you!!

Mary

Yes, I'd say that you can't do anything until you have the Munsell notations.  First they can act as an error control screening. If you made some error in dyeing the pure colors.  Second, putting them into the spreadsheet beside others will give you more feedback (aren't you lucky, Cathie is using the same yarn and has filled in most of her notations).  You are not hanging out there all by yourself.  If your notations and Cathie's are similar, smile.  If there is some discepancy, is it yours or hers?  which numbers are more logical? talk to Cathie.

Assigning notations is just experience.

Dyeing with a mixed color now has one more step in the calculations than dyeing with the pure dye.  The total amount of dye is divided between the various colors and yes you did it right for yellow and mustard.

I think the target for the yellow is 5Y 8/12, not 5Y 5/12 ( 5Y 5/12 doesn't exist in my book).

DOS is related to value.  You should see this this when you do your notations for the pure colors; as the DOS increases the values goes down ( the color gets darker).  But there are limits, of course.
