Just trying to continue our Daily Weaverliness for May:-)

I wound the warp for this last month, but I'm pretty sure the rest of the warping, weaving and fnishing of this scarf all occured this month! Look what a good inluence you have all been on me. :)

I just need to run the iron over the scarf before sending it off for the exhibition.

And now Oli J in his new scarf.

Artistry

Got a note yesterday, in the P.O. Box, that I had a package waiting. Peeked  through the window ( teeny post office , very small town) and I saw a box just right for my yarn for the baby blankets .The timing is right, so I think the box is for me! I think I can do a warp with the brace on if I hold my hand right and take it slow:) I have heard last week I have a third niece on the way ! As the family grows, so does the stack of baby blankets:)

Cathie, who's definitely going through weaving withdrawal, I need those baby blankets!

Erica, Oli looks quite fetching in his new scarf that you wove, which I believe you are submitting.

Erica J

Woohoo, on the potential yarn package!!

I was thinking about using the scarf in my Certificate portfolio, but decided on a different item. This scarf is going in the Cambridgeshire Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers Guild Triennial Exhibition!

So is my first weaving from my own hand spun. It's just a bookmark, but it is still exciting to have officially woven with my handspun.

I put another warp on my inkle loom tonight 3 different purples in 16/2 organic cotton. Some will be a bookmark for me, some will decorate keyrings for the sale table at the exhibition!

I decided to spend this rainy sunday trying to make my weaving room more functional.  Inspired by Tien, I took a trip to Ikea, and then spent the day organizing, sorting, building a data base of some of my stash (with photos, etc), and cleaning.  Its still far from perfect, but a big step forward for me.

while I am in Wyoming but I have gotten a pair of baby booties finished and a pair of baby socks too. I also managed toget a table runner and a table topper hemmed yesterday, that was my weaverliness! I am bringing home a new to me traditionastly spinning wheel. My sister's boss ave it to me. It needs some serious TLC but all the aprts are there and it even has a lazy kate and a couple of extra bobbins.

Erica J

Way to go Queezle (I love your new profile pic, even if the site doesn't orient it properly)! I need to do another reorganizing session in the studio. It just has to be done every once in awhile, unless you are spot on with putting things back straight away, which I am not.

Congrats on the new to you spinning wheel Endorph!

I wove up some bookmarks out of my own handspun this weekend. I wove them on one of my small inkle looms. I also put on another warp of organic cotton and used some of the techniques I was recently reminded of to weave a band that I will cut up and attach to key rings for the Guild's sales table at our upcoming exhibition. I think Oli J bought enough key rings at the craft store that I may put on one more warp and do another similar band.

We attended my school's National Honor Society induction this evening, so no time for weaving photos today. :)

Queezle

... is also my "real" name.  So when I see you talk about your fun new student, I imagine that being me, and I like to think of what fun we would have weaving together.

Cottons for baby blanket/ overshot

Oh, Queezle, that would be too, too good, hanging out and weaving! Idea blast!!!!! Wouldn't it be cool to rent a retreat center for a week ? Plenty of notice, then maybe some of our Weavolution friends could come for all or part of the week to weave? Hmmmmmmm.......

well , the box was mine:) the colors are so good!

to Cincinnati today for another acupuncture, back to Michigan on  Thursday.

Cotton for baby blanket # 1. 16/2 unmercerized cotton, warp is lined up in back. Tabby is the wheat colored cone in front, and, next to it is 8/2 pattern weft , fir. Brassard. Trust me, I think the fir color looks very cool:) overshot, not stripes, but intermingling the colors ,not necessarily in the order that they appear. I think the half tones and plain weaves will be pretty.

I'll be weaving on my Great Aunt Jesse's 4 shaft Leclerc which should be about 65 years old. She gave it to me, saying it had become too big for her in '69,I was 16 years old , She was retired for quite a few years. She came from Winnipeg to Palo Alto, CA. Where I was living to teach me to weave over 10 days. What did I weave for my first project? Overshot! Her favorite:) A wonderful Aunt who passed on a wonderful gift, weaving and a loom. Wisdom and Lots of love too:)

P.s. The loom has got to be older than that.

Cathie, I love these colors!

The Weaving History Conference was wonderful, as always. The theme was lace, so the sessions brought together lace-makers and weavers for an interesting weekend. The lace exhibition was fantastic! It runs through mid-June up in Clayton, NY. Here's a sample:

Work deadlines are keeping me busy until the wee hours. No weaving for me until June at this point.

Artistry

Sally,   The lace is gorgeous ! It looks like a sleeve on a garment, is it?  It's been a long time since I've seen a lace demonstration were there some at the conference as well?

thanks about the colors, coming from you, quite the complement!

Cathie,

We have been throwing around the idea of renting out a set of cottages in Wales, or elsewhere in the UK and running a weaving retreat. Any Weavolution members interested?! :) I think that would be fun anywhere. Also if you all ever plan a trip here, try to squeeze in a weekend or so in Cambridgeshire and you can stay at our "B&B". You get the stay in the Couch House and are welcome to play in my studio. :)

I did get another warp on the inkle loom, I changed up my surface pattern on this green design a bit and didn't quite get the effect I was looking for. I think the third cholor I chose to trow into the "pebbles, was unwise. I think I may take out another green tonight and see about replacing the color that is not working out. :)

I finally got the blanket I've been working on cut off the loom. Echo-Iris from an original draft from my instructor, Beth Duncan from Fine Line in St.Charles, IL. Just need to finish the ends and wet finish. I fear any kind of fringe will detract from the patterning, so I'm leaning towards sewing on a commercial blanket tape on the ends.

Queezle

What a great idea.  And my but you all have been busy - Cathie - lovely lovely colors, Thor - that blanket looks amazing!  And the lace is mind boggling.

I am taking a wee break at work, and you all gave me such nice things to look at and think about!  I probably won't be weaving for the next week - I have a trip to southern california for a family reunion - but my loom is patient.

endorph

Cathie - a weaving retreat sounds like great fun!!!

The colors on the cotton are wonderful - can't wait to see it on your loom!

Artistry

Yes ! I'll have to pull out a map and see where a center point might be in North America . Or perhaps figure out when, who wants to come, then a center point among those people, something to think about !

Hopefully I'll be able to get the warp done by the end of next week And beamed. We'll see how well my wrist works. One step at a time:) I'm excited to see what the colors do ! Athough, babies grow fast! Can't wait 'till they're two you know, lol!

Erica, count me in! Weaving in a cottage in Wales, are you kidding me? The stuff dreams are made of!

Thor, your piece is lovely! I am inspired by the Echo and Iris book and have been wanting to weave something. Your colors are so rich. I love it! I wonder if you used the Venne cotton?

What a lovely idea - actually both ideas - it would be amazing.

I managed to throw the shuttle a couple times tonight.  The shadow weave warp still lives.  I corrected the errors that gave me such a headache with the mother's day gifts, and its looking pretty good.  And - though I generally do not like 2-shuttle weaving - now that the pressure is off, I seem to be making far fewer treadling errors.

I wove it in...*gasp*... Red Heart Acrylic yarn.  I wanted it to be machine washable and able to stand up to any abuse teenagers could dish out. Perhaps my next one will be more refined & natural.

Sorry about the multiple replies.

I get it.  My teenage daughter wants a blanket woven of alpaca, or some very soft wool, yet her room....  need I say.... not so clean.  Dog hair, spilled food, etc.  I've suggested cotton to her, but you have a good point on the durability and washability of acrylic!

Artistry

Thor, good for you ,for spitting it out:) Acrylic, does come in a lot of good colors too! Thanks!

Thor, first of all, the blanket looks amazing.  Second, I know some people have issues with acrylic, but for me, it's what I started with when I didn't want to sink a ton of money into this hobby (boy did that change!) and the first pieces I made are sitll holding up.  The two main issues I have are that some acrylics can pill horribly, and since the winters here are extremely dry, I have issues with static cling while weaving which can get really annoying.  That said, I find they're great when you just want to try something out, but don't know exactly what you're look for.  They probably have the widest color variety so it's great to see how colors combine.  Here's a scarf I'm working on for someone at work, which is done in acrylic.  I've used this yarn before and it gives a nice soft feel, but can go in the washer/dryer, no problem.  A must for kids or people who have no idea how to do laundry!

retreat would be wonderful, put it in Wales and even better - actually anywhere in the UK would be nice. I haven't been to England since 1988 - I'm way overdue for another visit. (or at least dream of a visit)

laurafry

Almost ready!  The first out of town student arrived today, two more arrive tomorrow.  I'm assuming the fourth will also arrive tomorrow, but I haven't heard from her.  The rest are all locals.  :)  There are still boxes of *stuff* to be dragged up the stairs, but the demo loom is ready to go.  I keep thinking of yet more stuff to bring.  ;-/  The hazard of teaching in my home town - I have all these samples and teaching aids and can actually use them!  Class begins at 9 am Saturday.  Excited much?  ;)

rughooker1

Hello, my pattern calls for heddles 1&2 up. How do I achieve this?

ShawnC

Been a bit slow, but so enjoying everyone's projects!! So wonderful. I am still working on the sample warp. Combined the lotus and dragonfly to do some yardage for a tunic. So loving the drawloom!

laurafry

Managed to survive day one.  :)   Day one is *heavy* lecture and it's hard on me (nearly lost my voice) and the students, trying to absorb it all.  But they were able to begin their class work before the end of the day.  Fantastic group, great questions, good observations.  I always say the 'best' class is the one I am currently teaching and so this one is the current 'best' class.  :^)

Erica J

I had a student in this weekend, just one is a huge difference from your Old class. It was great fun, I taught her Han Damask pick up and showed her around Weavolution. Hopefully we'll be seeing her here in the group soon.

In turn she reminded me the proper way to use my hand cards. This afternoon I even broke out my carder.

My real weaverliness was getting back to weaving on my small rug for the kitchen!

Artistry

strange! Trying to plug in warp colors with Weavemaker on the Overshot design. The program won't let me take a section ( 1,2,1,2,3,2,1,2,1,)  and color it independently of others threaded in same pattern. As soon as I change one , all change to the same colors across the warp. This is on a PC. I work on a MAC at home. When I opened Weavemaker here, it said the PC could not support my version. But then I got it to work. Anyone know what's going on?

Laura, my friend Nancy is coming over next weekend with her samples from the Olds program down here in the States! She is so excited about the program! I can't wait to hear more about it and see her early work. I have 3 friends working on it!

laurafry

We are half way through the six day class.  Glazed eyes are evident.  So much to convey/absorb.  This photo is from yesterday, the learning exercise on value.

Value is more important than hue!

Artistry

Yes, yes Laura! What do they say? Value does all the work and color gets the credit!

Everyone has been so productive and creative. It always makes me happy to come in here to catch up on the posts. My weaverliness this weekend is - surprise - hemming. I am starting to see the end of the tunnel, er - pile of hemming. Smile I may also actually sit at the loom some too! More dish towels on the way!

tien (not verified)

ShawnC, that is amazing!! Love the colors and the motifs. Great job!

I just approved the final proofs for the book, and it has gone to the printer. My next step will be ripping open the envelope containing the advance copy - a Big Box of Books should arrive on my doorstep shortly thereafter!

ShawnC

How exciting for you, Tien! I can hardly wait to see your advance copy!  I really, really love the drawloom. I have 41 pattern shafts, but will build a single unit addition with the help of a wood workers. i doubt I can ever be bored with this amazing loom. I do love the orange color.

Erica J

Whew silk came in and I'm back at the drawloom! 17 inches to go on this piece.

I also got to see my first piece of weaving on exhibit this weekend! That was really fun. My guildmates are extremely talented and the entire exhibit was amazing!

ShawnC

Oh nice! Any pictures of the exhibit? The drawloom is my new favorite place.

Erica J

This is my scarf on display, it was of course on display right way up. :)

This photo is the painting our inspiration slips was taken from, my slip was from the blue/gray/rocky part, hence the blues and greys and the choice of rosepath.

I somehow got sucked into the FB hole for way toooo long.  There's lots of good information out there, but I've missed you all!!!

Last evening I finally settled into my new studio (OK, I'll admit there is still ALOT to do).  If you want to know what I've been up to you'll have to pop over to my profile.

Today I will rethread (with an as yet to be determined pattern) my new to me 8H LeClerc Compact.  I have 216 ends of 8/2 cotton (unknown yardage, but lots).  I'm open for suggestions for sampling/playing.   I am blessed to have a nice stash for weft choices as well.

ShawnC

Nice, Erica J! How fun is that?!

Glad the studio space is getting set up, loomyladi! Sounds like fun!

It was very fun! I also entered my first weaving from handspun, which was my Foggy Sunrise bookmark. It would not have made it into a jried show, but I tink it was nice to show that we can weave with our handspun.

The week after the Weaving History Conference (and not much sleep), I was off to Scotland for two weeks. We hiked the West Highland Way for 8 days, something like 75+ miles. I still have a bit of a stiff gait. I couldn't load photos here, but did create a quick project post.

Oops. I just checked, the project post did not load. I will retry when I get a chance.
