It started with a trip to the MET to see Manus   and Machina, extended to Sept. 5th.

And then a stop 10 blocks north to the Jewish Museum for the Issac Mizrahi retrospective.

The next stop was Tender Buttons.

And then a final stop at the Buddy Warren Gallery in the Village to see the fiber art of New Jersey artist Diane Savona. I would love to build a house with an big entryway to display this piece:

Oh Sally  -  these are amazing!  What a day you had -- thank you for sharing.

I'm happy to be home.  A hot afternoon kept me out of the garden, and so my eggplant bamboo warp is ready to go.  It is sort of amazing to have my two looms in one room, and both with projects.  I've tried a couple different weft colors, but I will have to wait for some real sunlight to know which one I like, and if I can decide without doing the wet finishing first.

Queezle, oh, do I love eggplant color! It will be fun to see your experiments and what you come up with :)

Sally, thanks for sharing your incredible Saturday! You always know the coolest places to go !

No weaving 'till Tuesday . Off to Chicago to see our boys and thier fiancées! Fun!

Sally, a tremendous day and photos. I have been to the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. A day like that is like a shot of adrenalin to your creativity. My favorite part of the Houston day was they had a garden of natural fiber plants.

I have a new goal. Weave on the porch in the morning before it becomes too hot. Today when I weave I will be concious of what I use and what type container that would hold it all.

10ashus

I must have hit the button two times. It posted my comment twice. I will ask to have this deleted.

Baby step today. Wove the header (4 times) for the white dish towels. I kept finding warp errors. I really did check those warp threads several times before winding.

The big excitement is this is the first time that gold thread did not turn a sicky green color. I used a thicker multi-colored yarn first, then the gold thread to draw the warp in closer. To use in a project, it would pair well with a bright color or bright white. I worried I had 2 mini-cones that were good for nothing but headers and tying packages.

I took a table loom with me on a vacation in Maine, and spent my non-tourist time weaving Interweave's Shadow Weave Scarf kit.  "Scarf for Ralph" Shadow Weave Scarf

I finished the name-draft table runner I was making for a wedding gift (the wedding was lovely, too), and I'm still weaving baby blankets on the big loom.

Summer + upcoming convergence = few posts?

I've logged on to confess that I have started to slide down that slippery slope that is shopping through colourmart.  Look what was in my mailbox this afternoon:

edited to add:  SusanBH and 10A. - nice job on the weaving.  I look forward to a bigger photo of that shadow-weave scarf - looks amazing - and the yellow weft does look lovely with those colors!  I think yellow is a very difficult color.  I've never used much red, so I'm hoping this yarn collection marries well - I'm again thinking scarves (Christmas preparation, never too early).

Dish towel mini-step. Today I completed the 2-1/4  inches in white before the border color starts and put a hemstitch on the starting edge.

Here is a tip for anyone with hand or brain issues. Use a chidren's needle for the hemstitch. It does not have a sharp point. It does have a super large èye for the thread.

Queezle, those yarns are my kind of colors. You got me thinking about making items for the holidays. I do need to plan ahead. I am so-o sloo-ow. Day of the Dead is a beautiful celebration.

Susan, you must be like a hummingbird, happily speeding around from loom to loom.

You 3 are holding down the fort:) nice weaving! Queezle, love those colors!

Warping, 1/2 way done, 150 ends every other day, up to approx 450 - can't make a fist today. So I guess no baby blankets or weaving:( Bummer

Take it slow!  It must be frustrating.

Those are not my typical colors, I am continuing to try to push myself out of my comfort zone.  The yarn is yak-geelong (a merino wool), and promises to be soft once washed.

10atious - I typically use a tapestry needle for hem stitching - like you describe, dull and with a large eye!  It sounds like you are making strong progress.

Stay cool everyone, yet another 100˚F predicted for today, thankfully we have very low humidity.

endorph

get my two bath towels hemmed and washed this weekend and then I will post photos.

Hem stitching - a tapestry needle, always a tapestry needle, you don't want to bleed all over your weaving. Laughing ( I speak from experience)

I have been steaming (pretty much literally, as the humidity is 'high' for us) through the new scarf line.  I'm now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  There are six more warps wound, and once they are woven, this series will be ended.  And then, hopefully, I can get back to writing, and a few other things that need doing.  I had hoped to use up a box of yarn, but I kept finding more hidden away in nooks and crannies - so it feels like I have been weaving my fingers to the bone - and still have full boxes!  (sigh)

sally orgren

Maybe THIS will be the weekend I get to weave?

In the meantime, I shipped a piece, submitted my entry form for the state fair and am contemplating if want to enter another show this fall. If I want to get anything substantial done, I better make a list!

theresasc

loom hopping.  I have a new tapestry started with colors way out of what I generally weave with.  Once I have the last two colors going I will probably post pictures.  I also threw a bobbins worth of yarn on a scarf that has been on one of my looms for months.  That is the first time on the floor looms in a long time.  I have been dealing with the effects of a head injury and floor loom weaving just wasn't going to happen.  Then I had another idea so I broke out my marudai and am doing a five color spiral braid.  I built the marudai myself quite a few years ago along with some homemade tama and have decided that new, real tama's are now on my Covergence shopping list.

10ashus

Yep. Don't I know. They sure do put a kink in weaving. Keep shuttling, even if your fumbling.

Did my first border on the dish towel. It is time to decide how I will measure and mark the length. Track the inches on a notepad; tie a yarn marker on the selvedge every 'x' inches; wind a cloth tape measure on the clot bar; or, make a paper strip to wind.

Queezle

Theresa - you are making great progress.  I feel for you - what a difficult path you have - and I am glad you have weaving to help you.  10ashus - I have started saving the paper tape measures that Ikea gives away.  They are easy to pin to the cloth, and are less bulky than the commercial tape measures that are used by seamstresses.

I am finally near the end of the Purple Rain warp.  My final dish cloth will be longer than a typical one, but I hate to waste the warp.

Something I have learned on this project - shadow weave, while looking like plain weave, needs a slightly closer sett.  Not as close as a twill, but definitely tending in that direction.

Its a 3 day weekend here in Utah - Pioneer Day is celebrated on monday.  I expect that this warp might be finished up by then!

theresasc

It is fun to see the cord dangling down the center:-)5 color cord

It has been a long time since I braided on my stand, it is pretty darn fun!

10ashus

In the U.S., we associate weaving with pioneer days. There were no shops for those ladies. How appropriate that Queezle be weaving. I am eager to see my dish towels, so I will pretend to be in Utah and celebrate. Weaving, music, and food.

Marudai. I have never heard or seen one. Facsinating. I will research the word on my next rest break.

Practice is working. This is my 4th project on my rigid heddle. I see grand, super huge improvements in the fabric. The movements are not quite so awkward feeling either.

Queezle, thank you for yet another excuse for a day trip to Ikea.

not weaving but . . . At least it is fiber related. Laughing I started this yesterday morning in my knitting group and then decided I needed to get it finished this weekend. It was actually a really fast projct since it was made with bulky yarn. It will be a birthday present for my great nephew Leo.

Wow, y'all have been BUSY!! I wish I could get as much weaving done as you have!

I have been busy too...and I am happy to say that, after almost four YEARS of pregnancy, I have finally birthed a healthy, happy, bouncing baby book! (Well, maybe not so baby...it looks pretty full-grown to me!)

Here is the advance copy, which arrived last Tuesday:

Master Your Craft

And here is me signing my very first book at the book launch party, which was yesterday:

Tien signing book

I'm thoroughly exhausted today, but it was one seriously banner week! (The book is PUBLISHED at last!!! HURRRRRRRRAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!)

endorph

How exciting to see the fnished project. Thank you so much for sharing the journey with us.

Queezle

Tien, you are amazing.  What really makes me feel good is seeing that happy look on your face.  You have much to be proud of, and that smile is well deserved.  I look forward to reading it.

10ashus

Tien, your great news and smile made a bright spot in my day.

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do. --Pele

My. dish towel is 5 inches longer than it was when I woke up this morning.

theresasc

I think that your smile as you sign your book says it all!  Really well done.

"Marudai. I have never heard or seen one. Facsinating. I will research the word on my next rest break."  10ashus, braiding on a Marudai is just another fiber rabbit hole:-)  A marudai is a braiding stand used to create braids, bands, or cords in a way called Kumihimo.  It is another cultures method to make narrow braids, bands, and cords.  There are a number of ways to do it along with a number of different types of stands or looms to use.  As with most fiber persuits, it is addictive:-)  I can never decide what I enjoy more, inkling or braiding so I have ways to do both:-)

theresasc

braiding and of course  it's not long enough, which is the way things go sometimes.  It's been so long since I braided on my marudai that I forgot just how much take-up is involved.  My solution is to set up for another braid and between the two I will have plenty of length. 5 color braid, first one

10ashus

I have made it to border #2 on the opposite end of dish towel #1. Lesson: Do not turn fun into work.

I planned on finishing the towels in July, then starting a new project in August. I really worked hard to not work hard. I am learning to enjoy the process versus the finish line. But. I still have 2 days.

Queezle

I hear you, 10ashus.  My goal in January was a new warp each month, and I am way behind.  But I forgive myself, and just keep going.  There are parts of weaving I don't like as much as others - I prefer planning and warping - and what I dislike the most is finishing.  You will get there!  I am hoping to finish up the warp I put on in May (for Mother's day).  It was a 7 yard warp - and I should remember how tired I get of the same warp!

Aren't you excited for the people heading to convergence?  I am looking forward to hearing their chatter.

ReedGuy

Congratulations Tien on your new book launch. I bet you will be very successful with it. We need a snoopy happy dance.

laurafry

I am so far behind where I wanted to be at this point in the year.  :(  But I have company coming Aug. 9 and we have day trips planned.  :)  Now for the weather to co-operate...

The next month will be busy - on Aug 23 I leave for Cape Breton to join in the Gathering of the Weavers (and teach a three day class on lace weaves).  By the time I get home, it will be the end of August!  Where does the time go...?

ShawnC

As usual, exciting to check in here and see what you all are doing. And Tien's BOOK!!!!

Not really weaving, but took the yardage off the drawloom before breaking it down for moving on the 22nd. Arrived the 25th, came down with a virus (which we were kind enough-cough, cough- to share with our friends who helped us unload). Still, coming together. Putting up the drawloom may be in order next week if the kitchen is relatively organized. A friend says moving has warped my priorities! Oh, and the son of my friend (one of the junior moving helpers) says they should start a moving business and say, We Move Anything-Except Looms, too many pieces. Ha ha!

laurafry

I have pretty much decided that I'm not moving until I am done with weaving...too much *stuff*!

theresasc

a new house big enough for all your stuff and have someone else do the moving:-)

This week I fell down the kumihimo rabbit hole.   Today I finished my second cord, it is in the same color order as the first, but with different braid patterning.   I like them both and they will go with the fabric that I am going to use for the bag, so I am going to use them both.  The grand plan is to have it done to take shopping Friday at Convergence.   I would cross my fingers but it's hard to sew that way:-)Two cords

sally orgren

Jacqui Carey is teaching at Convergence, right? I should bring my books to get them autographed!

10ashus

While at Convergence, I hope y'all are so exhausted at end of day from all the fun. But. Make a note or take a photo to share. Queezle and I will have to experience the conference vicariously through your tales and stories.

Dish towel #1 hem stitched in the final rows tonight. So excited. When I did the first border, the selvedge was super messy where I used different colors. Big, as in giant, improvement with border at the other end. Starting towel #2 on the same warp tomorrow.

theresasc

I finished my backpack today and I am happy with how it came out.  I created a project for it on my project page.   Now I am ready to take it to the fiber heaven at Convergence.

sally orgren

And now we'll know who you ARE!

I can't wait to see it in person, and I hope you'll consider modeling it on Friday at noon, during the informal show on the stage in the vendor hall!

ReedGuy

I hear ya on the stuff, been unloading a lot of stuff that were part of a by-gone era. The stores and companies behind them are long gone.

Dawn McCarthy

ShawnC I feel your pain, moved last August,  all looms in storage till May this year - just got the drawloom back up.  My family called the move "loomaggedon"

I finished the shadow weave scarf that I took along on vacation.  It's wool/silk so too warm to wear yet, but I look forward to the cooler weather when I'll want a scarf.

If you see the pack, be sure to say "hi".  I will be there on Friday, planning to spend the day in the vendors hall.
