Fibrefare, I'm lucky enough to have a very active Guild near me so we band together and come up with study groups where our interests lie. I am so lucky and know it, I've learned a lot from my Guildmates! I used to do a lot of independent study, I really missed the camaraderie. I have finally, finally, gotten this one part of the rose to look right, yeah, took 4 tries! Now I just have 3 more petals just in time for the end of January, and I can get ready for Feb. 1st Tapestry Diary which will be another flower. When you post a photo to this thread, do you post to Group or Group Post, I'm a little confused. Guidance appreciated!

ReedGuy

I just post the picture right in with the regular reply post. If you do a group post I think it's a new thread, but that's fine to. :)

Cheryl'B

as time does not allow, but I did another 6 inches of the blanket.  Should finish weaving tomorrow morning.  Then on to the finish work.

Cathie, if you click on the little green icon when you are posting a comment it will bring up a pop up box.  Then click on the little icon at the far right.  Another pop up box opens.

Click on upload, another box opens, choose file, click upload.

Then click on insert.

this should insert your photo in your post.

Hope this helps.

Double click on the image that you just sent to your gallery and it will place the URL of the photo into the little box that first opened, then hit the insert. Every forum has a different method of doing photos and I'm on 4, all different.

Thanks much Cheryl and ReedGuy! Now you'll be expecting a post! Not for a few more days:)

forward to seeing the rose Cathie - do you know what flower you will do for february?

Artistry

LOL you guys! Tina, I went to the Conservatory yesterday and took a bunch of photos of different kinds of flowers. Pansies, Lilies, Hibiscus, and more so got to get them on the computor and see what I've got, before deciding what I think I'll do. All of them are colorful though:) Didn't get far on the network twill, have to reread and do more research to understand. So far i have looked at Twill Thrills and The Complete Book of Drafting. Maybe I have to just throw one on the loom and see how it works, and then attempt to design one. I do have a year to study this:) But now I have to go do Tapestry.

My Rose

Finally got my rose done early this morning.

ReedGuy

Nice rose design, you do some nice work. Looks like it's growing out of the piece. :)

Do you take a photo and use a program that assigns each square (pixel) a unique color?

Artistry

ReedGuy, I take a Photo and draw a picture then all the color is done by eye as I do the Tapestry. Thanks!

Cheryl'B

That rose is absolutely beautiful!

Fibrefare, Cheryl , and Grethe, Thank you! Today, I am weaving a little on the big Tapestry. Switching hats, and studying Network Twill, so I can put a sample warp on next week. Sorting through flowers on my camera for February:) How's everyone else doing?

endorph

progress on the grey warp - only about 12 - 18 inches left to weave - have done a few different things on this on - I think I will be able to get a bag or two out of it once it is wet finished - it may need to hag a while for me to ruminate on before it "becomes" anything else!

lindaanngonzales

Hi,

I am new to weaving, actually, I just started about  weeks ago. I made a makeshift loom from a Hobby Lobby art frame and am learning the very basics of weaving. My boyfriend took note of my interest and said he would buy me a loom under $150. I am interested in dish towels, scarfs, place  mats, and weaved fabric to make a shirt. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can find a loom to make the things I desire at about $200?

Thanks!

lindaanngonzales

That rose is so beautiful. Is that made of weaving? How did you do it? Was it easy? Is it a slow progress? Love it.

to the wonderful world of weaving - A lom under $150 is tricky but you could start with a rigid heddle loom and then move up to a more expensive floor loom if you really take to weaving. That's what i did. I still use my rigid heddleloom and have made many, many things on it - towels, table runners, throws, baby blankets, scarfs, place amts, even fabric for bags. You could certainly to fabric for closthes as well - You can get something from 9 or 10 inches wide to 32 inches wide - For under $150 you could get a Schacht Cricket or something similar. PM me if you want to talk some more on this - Maybe some others here can give you some advice as well! Tina

Yes, a rigid heddle loom could be a terrific idea! I have a Beka that I enjoy very much, know there are other great ones out there. If you can get your budget up just a touch, there could be a nice table loom out there that has been used by a gentle weaver? And maybe consider backstrap weaving or the kind of rigid heddle weaving that is "off loom," set up much like backstrap, but with a heddle. You can even make a rigid heddle with Popsicle sticks and a drill if you want to save your pennies for a floor loom later? It sounds like you have a great spirit of adventure and curiosity, so know you will enjoy the path you are on!

For lindaanngonzales, price depends on a lot of factors. The least expensive floor looms in my area are counterbalance looms, and usually they are in need of a bit of work to make usable. I recommend you keep a close eye on Craigslist for your area. Just type in "Loom" in the search box. You never know what you will find. My first loom came to me that way.

Lindaanngonzales, welcome to weaving! Thank you so much for your complement on the rose! it is woven on a Tapestry loom. It is made of wool, with a tiny bit of DMC cotton floss for outlines. And a bit of sparkle:)The warp is cotton. It is slow to weave. I like doing it anyways. Good luck finding your loom! Do let us know what you find, ask advice, what you're making!

Walkingquail

Cathie, that tapestry rose is amazing! Your workshop was helpful, I'd say. Great blending and introduction of colors that the eye will blend-like the Impressionists! And Linda Ann, check Craig's list regularly but watch out for looms that aren't square or were stored in obviously damp conditions which warped the wood and rusted all the hardware. You can spend a small fortune trying to fix them. That said, bargains are out there and rigid heddle looms are a great way to get started with a new loom.

Artistry

Thanks again Walkingquail, the workshop was awesome, I learned so much!

fibrefare

I imagine you are picking up that once you have a loom, you won't readily give it up.  It doesn't matter how complex your weaves become, it is always great to have a more basic loom around.

I have a 24" Kromski Harp and it came with warping pegs that you insert in the bottom of the loom so you won't need a warping board to start out with.

Be certain to check on Ravelry, in the Warped Weaver's Marketplace, as well.

fibrefare

I've decided to give sectional warping a go & I just placed an order for the tensioner & thread guide as well as a new tie up kit to restring both back beams.  Definite progress is being made on the Big Mac!

Grethe

I have finished my crepe samples, I'm started weaving placemats in cotton and in progress winding a warp for kitchen towels for my sister.

Hello weavers! I started my second project with my Lilla loom this month (second floorloom project ever).  It is a Harrisville Shetland warp with my  Icelandic weft that I spun myself with a drop spindle.  The pattern is a broken diamond twill from Viking age finds.  I am using a temple for the first time and am VERY happy with how its working.

(Cathie - I love the rose!!!)

everyone - I will be starting the February thread later today - My weaving out put this week has been on the low side but I have been planning several projects - I think that counts.

Artistry

I have spent most of the day mentoring new weavers. It's new program at our guild. It is a great success! More experienced weavers sign up for one or two days a month and help beginners who are weaving at the Guild facility, with those many questions that are bound to come up. It was really fun and a great way to welcome new people into the Guild. I am reading and getting ready to warp for a Network Twill. Not my own design this time.something from Madelyn van de Hooght's Drafting for Handweavers. Digitizing this month. Warped the tapestry loom and ordered yarns:) have the next flower photographed and am drawing the cartoon this afternoon. Thanks for the complement Ryashani!

ReedGuy

I'm still here, just taking a break from weaving and making warping tools.

Cheryl'B

Glad it's over....hope February is a bit more calm.

Finished the baby blanket.  On to a new month and new projects.

endorph

the blanket is beautiful. Doesn't it feel good to get a project off the loom!
