Weaving this morning so I thought I would start the thread.

Started on color gradations in the Tapestry Study Group.  Yesterday I also used my digital camera to take a black & white photo of some tapestry yarns to find value, great tool to use.

Here's part of what I've done at Tapestry Study Group. Different kinds of color blending. Although , the center and top are the same weaving technique.

I have learned , again, how important value is. It makes or breaks the deal.i have learned that it's good to think of your tap. In values first, then in colors. I read recently in a fabulous article by Sarah Swett( sp?) that value does the work, and color gets the credit . ( I don't think that's an original quote) it was a ATA article under Education , I will try to find the link :)

Going to the airport later, Home Today! 3 weeks of bopping around Florida with Dad and Marvie ( and Ed!) has come to an end. Adventures, adventures ! Good  times :) I am so very lucky In many ways.

Patagonia is almost ready to weave on ! I'm too excited to get back home and start working.

This is from Sarah Swett's Blogpost on the American Tapestry Alliance Blog tour, thanks to Tommye Scanlin for posting this on the Tapestry Study Group site. ( about the importance of value)

Its lovely being away, but always oh, so nice to come home again.  The more time passes, the more you'll treasure this journey.  Your tapestry sample is beautiful.  I love the bottom color blends, so subtle, and the phrase value does the work and color gets the credit.  In my dabblings with rug hooking, I'd say that's true there too, and in weaving.

Our school librarian opens the library once a month for crafting (mostly quilting). I took my taquete today and wove twice as much today as I had last week. I had almost finished four full repeats when I left the craft session! I just managed to eek out the 5 repeats I wanted for my bag! I have woven this twice now, the first time I forgot to put the small stripes between the large blocks, which still looks nice, but the revised version is nice and crisp.

Lovely work, Cathie! And thanks so much for the Sara Swett link. I first heard of her years ago in the book, Knitting in America. Then found her tapestry weaving. It makes me swoon. I so admire folks who are able to weave such painterly pieces!

I'm busily weaving away at the skillbragd samples. Have tried linen and paper yarn in addition to different colors of wool. I originally was going to pick up the drawloom from Maine in April, but after much (reasoned) thought, I knew that traveling would do me in. I can barely go an hour these days. Sigh. So, went on uship and got a shipper and the loom was picked up yesterday and will be here on Saturday. So, must finish this warp and get the loom down so I have a place for the Oxaback! A horrible position to me in for sure ;-)

I finished the samples, but now I am tying on additional warp for two scarves. To see the "rest of the story" you don't have to go far:

Eeek. Nearly empty looms!

Hi Tien,

I read that you shop at Colourmart.  I'd like to as well, especially since I'm in Jordan and there isn't any store here or in any surrounding countries.  The problem I have is that when I looked at the site, I find it difficult to navigate.

Do you have any suggestions you can give me to help me navigate the website?

Thanks,

Alaa

Thanks ShawnC ! Have fun with the Oxaback, I hear they are fantastic looms!

Well, I'm glad to say I'm back in the groove again! I'm getting to know Beauty, and she is fantastic! I have her all threaded and tied up. Now letting the warp rest a while, it will stretch. Then spacing the warp and few other things, will be weaving this weekend :) A pic or order out of chaos!

believe we are almost at the end of another month. Where has the time gone? I am writing myself a reminder to remember to start a new group thread for March - thankfully I have another day to get that done!

Hi Alaa,

I usually just use the "Common searches" box on the right part of the screen. It lets me search by weight and fiber type, which is what I usually want. Then I just click on the picture of the yarn I want to see, and it shows me all the colors.

What is causing you difficulty on the website?

Had a second idea for glistening snow, so I warped an additional 400+ warps for a few more samples: new structure, different materials, different loom.

What was I thinking?! Probably influenced by the warm weekend weather, thinking winter must be over...

Separation anxiety :) that first project and you were friends for a very long time :)

Tapestry, tapestry, all goes well ! When I have a little bit woven I'll post a pic. I'm working 3 hrs a day. YAY!

you would not believe the tension on this loom. It's all steel, and I think you get 40 lbs per inch. Then the shed is enormous for a tap loom.

Yay for tapestry! Glad you are getting so much weaving time in.

I'm currently sulking, and waiting for more yarn to arrive so I can wind a new warp. At least two of the three warps I wound for my triple weave project won't work (too tangled), and I may not be able to salvage the third, either. So I am feeling pretty cranky. But I still want to do the project, so as soon as more yarn arrives, I'll be off again!

Sounds like you're having a blast, Cathie! Tien, not so much. Bleck. Oh, Sally, more 'snow' sounds good to me. We've had almost no winter and I love the season. Maybe because I first taught myself to weave in order to tolerate long N. Wisconsin winters with toddlers? ;-) I posted in Double Harness weaving about the Oxaback. It's heeeerrrrrrreee!

How fun for you, Shawn!  I am glad to hear that your new loom is home.  I think that you are going to have a very good time with it.

I am still completely immersed in tapestry.  I have woven a few picks on the natural bath towel warp the other day and then went right back to my tapestry loom.  That is what is holding all my attention these days.

Great ShawnC, happy for you :) Tien, warps not working out and getting tangled is something to get cranky about ! Hopefully your new yarn will arrive soon and you'll be good to go :) you have been so productive this month it's amazing to me!

unweaving must be in the air. I spaced my warp beautifully. i have 4 shafts pulling the threads on the horizontal.two of the shafts pull the top warps on either side of the middle, the other two pull the bottom warps on either side of the middle. Per instructions, because this warp is about 30 inches wide , the 4 shafts overlap. Using the calculations provided , I left some heddles empty to avoid crowding. Alas, crowding of the heddles is what I got. So the epi is off in the center of the warp. When I open the sheds it seems fine. the epi is off even with the spacing twining in. So, what I'll try is putting in an extra twining where the epi is off and tying that cord to the sides of the loom to stretch out the close epi. Wish me luck. I really, really, don't want to start over again, ugh.

Sorry to hear that you've been having warping woes too, Cathie! I hope you get it straightened out without having to rewarp!

I am still waiting for more yarn to arrive, so I'm canning and putting away my candied citron peel and candied orange peels. 10 pints of orange and 5 pints of citron! That will keep me in fruitcake and chocolate-covered citrus peel for awhile. (And darn tasty, too.)

Tomorrow I'm going to get out the electric frying pan and try my hand at batik. In particular, I have some goooorgeous Balinese tjaps (copper stamps for batik) from Dharma Trading Company that I've never manage to use successfully. Clearly this needs to be fixed, and since I *know* I'll never have time to do it once I'm back to work, I'm going to seize the day tomorrow. Wish me luck!
