January was busy busy....dad in and out of hospital....son in and out of hospitals....everybody is okay, but dang am I tired!  Baby blanket is off the loom and finished.....YAY!  On to some new projects.  My son asked for a scarf but did let me know that he probably wouldn't wear it, just wanted me to make him something....ugh!  So much yarn and not sure what to make (after making scarves for all my boys).  Will have to play around with the software.

ReedGuy

You did a fine job on the blanket Cheryl.

Need any curtains? :D

How about some overshot napkins?

Keep going. :)

Artistry

Cheryl, I love it when you play with your software! I'm remembering that gorgeous piece ' the first piece with Tencel ' I think it was called, beautiful. Sorry to learn jan. had so many trips to the Hospital. May February be a very heathy month for your family! Today, finished the cartoon for the next flower. Fixed a mistake threading the tapestry loom. Gone to Detroit for the weekend, I'm taking Madelyn van de Hooght's book on Drafting with me, homework:) Happy Weaving!

Artistry

Cheryl, just saw the the baby blanket on the jan. thread. It's lovely! Lucky, lucky, baby!

what flower are you wokring on for February? Sorry if you have told this already and I just missed it. . .

Artistry

Well .... I think I'll keep it a surprise for right now, kinda have to because I don't know the name of it! LOL I went to the Conservatory and took photos and forgot to write down the names! So now it's a trip back to see what I'm doing. I'll tell when I know! It is pink and blue.

endorph

Cathie - keeping us in the dark! ;-)

ReedGuy

Just a stinker for holding back. :D

Artistry

Googled it while DH and I are on our way to Detroit and it's a Delphinium! So there you have it, now if only I can weave it, gulp!

endorph

pretty - you can do it - you know you can!

Cheryl'B

Oh my gosh, you have to visit Forma fiber arts while here. Where will you be? Are you doing anything weaverely while here in Michigan? Thank you for the wonderful compliments. ReedGuy, what a wonderful idea about curtains....I definitely need to cover a window! Thanks.

Cathie, I'm sure it will turn out great, the tapestry delphinium . Have you tried any tigers or leopards? :)

Cheryl, I'm just full of ideas. :D

stash buster off the RH loom this evening - still needs wet finishing.Besides the 5/1 spot lace diamond samples I did earlier - I have some houndstooth, clasped weft and some more 5/1 spot lace on this panel. I am hoping for some nice fulling during the wet finishing process. At least some of the fabric is destined for a teddy bear.

Oh Cheryl , I just googled Forma and I so want to go! It looks fabulous I'd go crazy! Alas, I'm here for a funeral:( we're in Bloomington Hills which I don't think is close to the store. But I know it's here now so next time I'm close..... ReedGuy, I've done the patterns of cheetahs, zebras and giraffes , Gotcha:) Tina you've got a lot of interesting patterning in your stash buster. Do you have a pattern for your teddy bear? Weaverly things while gone, drafting homework, and finishing up the back of rose. Hopefully Forma, but I don't know

Artistry

Forgot to say ReedGuy, thanks for the vote of confidence!

Cheryl'B

Love the color combinations.  Can't wait to see the teddy bear!

Cathie I'm sorry for your loss.

Just in case you find the time, Forma is not that far from Bloomfield Hills.  And it is off the beaten path, don't follow garmin and/or maps from the internet.  They will get you lost!  It looks like a house built back in the woods.  It has the shop in the back part of the house where the entrance is.  This is how I would go from Bloomfield Hills (probably about 30-35 minutes):

Either I696 west to I23 south or I696 west to I275 south to M14 west to I23 (94) south......then go about 1/2 mile to Barton road exit.  At the exit turn right, go about 2 miles to Joy, turn right, go just over the overpass turn left on North Churchfield Rd (dirt road), for about a mile, then the road turns.  Don't turn, go through the broken pillars at the end of the road.  This is the private drive to Forma.  Be aware, he does not take credit cards.  He takes cash and checks only.  His prices are awesome and his yarn is fabulous!

Answer to my busy time away from home, I just purchased wif n proof.  Now I can draft wifs when I'm not home.  Haven't gotten the link yet but that will allow me to do weaverly things while I'm not here.  I've been thinking about yarns for some Roman Shades.  I'm thinking natural cotton, maybe with a splash of olive at the very bottom of the shade.

Artistry

Cheryl, thanks for the directions, funeral is at 1:00 so maybe we'll Make it beforehand! Thanks.

teddy bear pattern shopping this morning - I found a few online but none that really moved me - I don't want anything too complicated and not sure I want articulated arms and legs - just a good lod fashioned cuddle bear. This is for a WAL over on RAV. I really like the patterning from the red variegated chunky yarn - that may end up as a panel on a bag!

warpology

Just need to finish sewing care/brand tags on the baby blankets. Then planning a project in Crackle, I bought another book on the subject. Classic crackle & more by Susan Wilson. In 30+ years of weaving I've never woven crackle! It's a block weave so I'm having fun learning about it's treadling and such.  Anyone else working on crackle?

Monica Bellas (not verified)

I've been down with the flu for the last week; so frustrating to have this "extra" time to weave (I stayed home from work) and no energy for it!  I'm hoping to get the last couple of inches on a scarf for a friend done today, so I can twist the fringe prior to the Superbowl tomorrow!

ReedGuy

Today I ordered some unmerc. cotton 16/2 and 8/2 and a new book on overshot (older publication) to study up some more on the structure. :)

super bowl - I do puppy bowl on occasion but no super bowl in this house! Been planning a couple of projects this afternoon

ReedGuy

Me neither. This is the cold north, so it's hockey territory. And I don't bother with that neither. Too many hobbies, like weaving. :D

That being said, I finished the fringes on a  couple scarves from awhile back. One of them went down the road with me yesterday for a gift. Tucked the other away in a safe place. :D

No weaving today. But I bought! My girlfriends and I spent the weekend in Portland OR, so I made them take me to Yarnia. Pretty blue rayon/cotton slubby stuff and an end cone of some wool and angora ply.

sally orgren

...and wove most of the rest of the weekend! I pulled my first sample off the loom, resleyed, and wove a second. Then, I pulled out my Sharpies, and for my third sampling, I am going to color up some warps and play with colored wefts. (Easy to do once the loom is threaded. I can just raise the shafts I want to color.)

This looks like simple basket weave, but it is actually more complicated. A 10 shaft weave with 4 different fiber sizes, 4 shuttles.

ReedGuy

warpoloy, I haven't done crackle but I have done block damask. :)

Artistry

Sally how clever to color your warp with sharpies! Great first sample! Home! Yay! Today I continue to finish the back of the rose and get it ready to mount. Will take out the header on the new tapestry and redo since it's starting to draw in. Still waiting on yarns:( Good day for warping the Network Twill. Cheryl , didn't get to go to Forma, too much stuff going on . Thanks so much for the directions and everything! But, today I do get to buy some 10/2 in colors!

Cheryl'B

Any luck with the teddy bear shopping? Not sure what crackle is, so it's a safe bet to say I haven't done it. Sally, that sample sure is pretty. Does the marker stay on the yarn? Monica, hope all is better with you. Cathie, buying yarn is always fun no matter where you get it. Forma is a experience though. Charles is somewhere in his 70's or 80's and very knowledgable, and such a sweet man. Maybe the next time you come to Michigan you can make the trip. It's nice to see life slowly getting back to my normal. Going to warp for two scarves tonight. Finished the planning yesterday.

teddy bear patterns - think I will make them up from some of my fabric stash to practice on before cutting into the handwoven. I trust my sewing skills but I don't always trust that the patterns are correct or that the instructions are clear! Still need to weave another panel of fabric so will be warping up the RH in the dark grey / lighter dark grey stripe and get a bit more houndstooth woven for the bear body. Might do a pinwheel sample first though! Sally looking forward to more samples - love the picture you shared!

sally orgren

The photo happened because as I was walking the sample back to the weaveatorium with both the camera and sample in the same hand. I noticed the camera was still on, and that was the live view on the back of the camera. (I couldn't resist making the shot!)

Sharpies are good for experimenting, but not for a final project. I do have fabric paints that I would also consider using, but fabric dyes are probably better if this was a real-deal. I will wash this Sharpie sample, but at that point, I will save a photo for the color info, so if it washes out, no problem. I may soak the sample in vinegar to prevent washout, and use color-catcher sheets in the load to pick up any residual stuff that might come off. And I won't wash it with anything else in the load. Basically, I want to see if the thins as darker colors would enhance the natural thicker threads, creating even more dimension. Or not!?

Been lurking on your thread for two months+, happy I finally have something new on my loom to contribute. YOU all are an inspiration!

Walkingquail

good job! The last week or so I have been trying to get the hang of my first Inkle band. I think I'm getting it and then I pull too hard or too little or go the wrong direction! But I know I'll settle in eventually. I wasn't expecting a great first try. I warped another table runner today for my floor loom. And tomorrow is tapestry day. It is time to complete my class project & time for something new. Sally, that basket weave photo is inspired, happy accident while the weaving was super planned and deliberate. Funny how art is sometimes.

Sally the sample looks interesting! Can hardly wait to see the next sample!

this so far this week - I have been planning a couple of projects. I have been busy working on some knitting homework that needs to get done by Saturday morning. Am going to try and get a loom warped tomorrow evening for a sample . . .

sally orgren

Sample 3 is looking better in regards to differentiating sizes, and the Sharpie sample #4 bled in the dryer, even after the vinegar soak, hand washing, & using color catcher sheets! I suspect if I were to wash it again in the machine, perhaps the bleed areas may wash out. See for yourself: vinegar on left, water and dish detergent on the right, with sample. You can see how pink the water is becoming!

Sample 3:

Sample 2:

Artistry

Sample 3 is really dimensional Sally ! Awesome! Now, is that just from coloring the thin threads to give more depth, or did you change the structure at all? isn't it FABULOUS what color can do? Love it! This week! Putting the finishing touches on the Tea towels for the Exchange and found a wee threading mistake! Now have to redo them! Actually ,it's o.k. Because I 'd think OH, I should have done this , Oh, I should have done that and now I can! Waiting for the rest of the tapestry yarns, climbing the walls, supposed to be here Friday. Started the warp for the new Tea Towels. I'll finish that today.Working on Drafting for Handweavers Book for study group. Working on the back of the Rose. Network Twill is on the side table until the Tea Towels are done, have to do the towels first.

ReedGuy

Hopefully by the weekend I will test drive my new sectional warping abilities. :)

endorph

I really love sample 3 - it looks Moroccan or Middle Eastern - very nice

Artistry

ReedGuy- been following your work on the other thread, it really is beautiful, looks very functional and sturdy! What are you going to put on for your test drive?

ReedGuy

Some towels at first, then go wider and longer in a few a steps. ;D I've also made a tension box with a meter that's posted over there, but in the "Workbench" thread. I've got it all mounted, I need a couple more clothesline hooks and then I'll post a picture. I hope to weave up to the heddles with the way I have it set up.

endorph

sampling eight harness pinwheels on my rigid heddle loom. I am still trying to get my beat right but it is not too hard once you get the pattern down. I am writing up a post-it note cheat sheet and going to weave a few more repeats before switching to knitting for the rest of the evening!

Artistry

Beautiful Tina! Pinwheels are one of my favorites! Good luck with the knit-a-thon!

ReedGuy

Looks like a very nice weave pattern. Which loom are you on? Looks like a light framed loom. :)

endorph

I am doing this on my Schacht Flip rigid heddle.

ReedGuy

Ah, thanks. So many looms out there. :)

Monica Bellas (not verified)

I'm going through weaving withdrawals.  I've got four sets of papers to grade this weekend and a trip to the museum, so I'm hoping to squeeze some heddle threading time in somewhere!  Who knew weaving could become so important in keeping our sanity?

ReedGuy

I'm winding spools for 9 towels. Almost 400 threads, but shouldn't take too long to thread. ;D
