Cnn you believe that another month has sped past? Here in Central Texas, March came in like a lion but is certainly leaving like a lamb. I am reminded of the lyrics to June is bustin out all over " March roared in like a lion, a whippin' up the water in the bay. Then April sighed and stepped aside and along came prety little May. . . ." The trees are in bloom, the wild flowers are starting to sprout up along all the highways, the brief Texas Spring will be over all too soon. I hope Spring finds all of you well and waverly (especially those of you who have been suffering from an extremely long winter this year.) I am looking forward to seeing more wonderful projects from all of you. Weave on!

April does feel like a fresh new month! Today I'm putting a new warp on the Tap. Loom for Kathe Todd-Hooker workshop, starts Thurs. this week, soooo excited! I have some designing ideas to work on if my wrist starts to act up. It's gonna be good:)

Only 84 more days until a week at Vavstuga! In the meantime, I have a color study on my floor loom, Brooks bouquet on the RH, a band on the inkle loom, and I'm trying to figure out how to weave with these little cards. Teaching 11 and 12 year olds how to braid with a Kumihimo disk this afternoon. Really have my eye on the Viking tunic featured in Handwoven---but I'm a bit worried about all of those ends! This is my year to dive in though--so I might have to give it a go.

Artistry

QuakerWeaver, That tunic in Handwoven caught my eye too. It's beautiful ! I hope you do it, my sewing skills I don't think are up to it :)

theresasc

caught my eye as well!  I have some really lovely, fine grist hemp that I have been wanting to turn into yardage for clothing.  It is on my "round-to-it" list and that tunic has me thinking about it again.

I am in the kitchen again on my looms, rep placemats on the CM and coordinating towels on the 6 shaft loom.

MMs-and-OOs-Ha…

Well I am almost ready to thread my 60" PDL, 100 yards of 60/2's silk, full width, 80 epi, thousands of heddles to go but I am up to the challenge. I am making yardage and once I am set up I think it will go OK. This will be a five shuttle taqueté design with my Compudobby and because of the weave structure, it will be a dense weft-faced weave. Photos to follow. Wish me luck!

Queezle

My loom is inaccessible due to a 25 foot steel beam that is in the house, and supposedly will slide into place in the ceiling where the load-bearing wall used to be.  Its a sacrifice to not weave, but my stack of to-be-hemmed dish towels is enjoying some attention.

Artistry

Stayed up until 1:30 a.m. Talking tapestry and such with Kathe Todd-hooker, I feel very weaverly ! While everyone is I sleeping , I'm going to get the rest of the tap loom ready for the workshop tomorrow :)

endorph

sorry you can't weave but good for you to be hemming towels. I really need to get some hemming done!

Sounds like a good evening for you Cathie - have fun in the workshop! But take care of that wrist.

Artistry

Yes Tina I will take care of my wrist. I started to design a tapestry that I will be working on this summer so I'm going to take my design work with me. If my wrist gets the least bit tired I'll work design and get Kathe's Input, a win win deal for me :)

Springtime in Vermont! We're still totally snow covered in northern VT, but the 50 degree high is working on lowering snow levels. I can see the moisture now on the pond frozen so many months. Roof slides startle us! But the robins and red winged blackbirds are back, at least the males are. And I continue to warp my new loom. I try a new pattern at least twice before trying another. Though I'm recently retired, (kindergarten) I'm busier than ever, though now the "what" is my own endeavors, and I find when I'm not weaving, I'm thinking about weaving, or reading about weaving, or online looking at yarns and prices! And loving it all!

I'm so impressed with your enthusiasm!  I went to Vav once and it was so special.  I cherished memory.  And, all yoour looms seem to be dressed, unless you have some you forgot to mention.  That's really wonderful.

I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished pieces.

I always love seeing your work.

Sally, Your study of Klee is inspiring! You have captured the essence of the painting. It's beautiful! I start down that path with Chagall next week and the ideas are really percolating ! I'm also designing my next tapestry for the summer, Orchids, still working on backgrounds. This floor loom, then tap. Loom , what can I say, , I'm a Gemini:)

ReedGuy

I'm not cultured enough to know who Klee is, but the weaving looks very nice Sally. :)

In forestry, most of the culture is in the woods. Silviculture, a word that all the spell checkers still have not figured out. ;)

endorph

I love both of your Klee samples - much more than I like Klee!

Cathie - looking forward to the Orchids

Reedguy - spell checkers and auto correct / auto fill are a royal PITA! I was cataloguing yesterday and looking up the book Risque Photos - its about red light districts on the frontier - and the computer kept wanting to auto fill with Risk Management! While there may be some risk involved in the risque photos I don't think it is the same thing! ;)

ReedGuy

Hmm, Gemini you say. Maybe I need more looms. :D

Jo Raymond

Sally, I love the Klee study. Cathy, I'm looking forward to Chagall.

Somehow I double posted and can not find a way to delete the second post. I can make it blank, but there it still is! So, I quess I will update on progress on the weaving studio.

My weaving is still in the purchase stage, more yarn, a stainless reed, a bobbin winder, rug shuttles and ski shuttles, most recently.

Your latest project is so pretty, with so much to catch the eye...the pattern, the great colors!

Jo, Enjoy building your studio! I purchased my loom last October, and repurposed many cabinets and shelves to make a sunny studio room. My favorite place to be!

Grethe, So funny, but a wonderful idea too :) Spent the day in the Tapestry workshop. It's really fun. Wrist started bothering me so I brought my drawing things and started drawing the orchids from photos that I took. This is just the early steps of designing what I'll be working on this summer. Tomorrow after the workshop all the attendees and a few husbands will be coming to our house for take out Chinese, it will be crazy fun:)

sally orgren

What size shoe does your loom wear?

;-)

Grethe

It's my husband's, i'll guess the size is 12. I have ask him to throw his old and dead runningshoes away and so he did :)

Weavejoyforall

What a wonderful Idea to RE-USE things that would end up in land fills!

I bet it works great to.  I have found that an ounce of Re-Useablity can help the earth with a pound of wonderful results ...thanks for the grand idea...and thank your hubby to.  LOL

Grethe

It works well, the loom is located on first floor and when I beat hard it's rather noisy downstairs in the livingroom. So now it don't move and the noise is muted.

You allways talk about vomen and shoes, here at my place, we can talk about men and runningshoes, I guess he has 10-15 pair of them. :-)

Last day of the workshop! Haven't been able to weave as much as I would like because of my wrist, major bummer:( however I am learning a lot AND working on my orchid design by drawing parts of it to really get to know it's curves etc. it's very fun, and Kathe can help a lot:) so it's a good workshop:)

endorph

weaving this week for me but I have been spinning - both on the wheel and the drop spindle. Here is what I've done the last week or so. . .

tommye scanlin

Cathie,

Glad you're working on the orchid drawing but sorry that you weren't able to weave as much as you'd like to.  Having a chance to spend time with Kathe was great, I know!

My studio progress is slow this first part of the month.  Husband had surgery on April 1 so there is more need for me to stick around the house and not be at the studio.  I'm making use of the time productively, though... getting revisions made for my handouts, etc. for my class at John Campbell Folk School coming up on the 13th.

Artistry

Tommye, Speedy recovery for your husband! Have fun at John Campbell Folk School! Tina, Your spinning colors are beautiful!

Loom Day!

Making my first payment on, and picking up my loom in a couple of hours!

pammersw

This is the loom I bought. If the photo won't load, go to http://www.lasaranas.org/classifieds.htm to see the ad.

She agreed to let me make payments on a reduced sale price. :)

Artistry

Pammersw, So happy for you! Can't wait to see what you weave on your new to you loom! Again Congratulations!

pammersw

Thanks! I just reduced the size of the photo. Been having a hard time getting it downloaded so I can crop the bottom stuff off. I'll update the photo later. :)

pammersw

P.S. it's just what I wanted. I was looking for 3 to 4 feet wide, folding, 8 harnesses,  jack type, and affordable.  :)

ReedGuy

Nice loom pammersw. I could load the original, but had to go to 'View Image' or 'View Page Info' and select Media in Firefox to see it all.

I'll be looking forward to seeing your first yardage come off the new loom. :)

tommye scanlin

I spent much of yesterday working on revisions of my handout for my upcoming John Campbell Folk School tapestry class (starts on the 13th).  I decided to add some diagrams to my handout... easier to weave with yarn than with marker sometimes (note the scatch-out and Xs over some!).

It's a rainy day in Georgia (hear the song in my head right now)... so I'll settle in for more revision work.  And maybe a bit of weaving later today.tapestry diagrams

pammersw

That's cool! Pictures and diagrams really help me to "see" and understand a new concept.  I'm sure your students will appreciate it. :)

sally orgren

but sketching out possible tie-ups for a complicated S&W treadling on my floor loom. After I sketched out an option, my feet were dancing under the table to see if my brain could handle it!

Sue in VT

Dear Pammersw, All those pretty, more complex weaves to tackle! Exciting for you!

pammersw

Is it weird that, because the Baby Wolf rental has less loom waste and I have limited yarn for the scarves, that I want to weave the last two scarves on it before switching to the Pendleton for the placemats? I've already paid for the rental till about the 26th.

ReedGuy

I wouldn't say so. If it's all wound on the wolf, finish out the weave. You'll have lots to weave on the new one. Don't rush. ;)

Finally back in the swing of things after the workshop , Kathe left Tuesday morning we had a blast. Yesterday I spent most of the day getting some drawings done ( not finished yet) of the orchids, will have a teapot and tea cups in the tapestry too. I figure it will take me all summer to do. 18 in. Wide 30 in. Long, 12 epi. I'll use a really fine ELF yarn , weft bundles of about 4-5, for weft blending, the yarn is from Australia. I've used it for a long time. Once I have the drawings done i'll take photocopies of them at different sizes, and start arranging them into a design. I really enjoy this part. Today is Tapestry Study group, will get something going on my worshop loom for the demo I'm part of on Saturday. Busy weaving days. love It!

Erica J

Cathie,

Your worksjop with Kathe and Tapestry Study Group sound great!

I found out Abbey Franquemont will be doing a workshop here in August and hope thete is still room for me.

I finished off my damask sampling yesterday. I am starting to warp the Glimakra for taquete on the drawloom. This is part of a research paper I am writing on the development of weave structures from about 200 AD-1500AD.

Artistry

Erica, I hope you get into Abby Franquemont's workshop, when I hear the Franquemont name, I think Peruvian textiles, is that correct? Your reseach paper sounds very interesting. I love Damask! Though I've never done it on a drawloom, only 3 block 5 shaft on a floor loom. Have fun with the Taquete, it's coming up soon in my Drafting group, I may need your help:) Back to your reseach paper. When I was reseaching Damask I found one author ( don't know if I have it footnoted) who claimed that Damask was developed in Prussia at the same time as in China. The Prusians used a different method, that of a third rod I believe. Others contend the knowledge came down the silk road with the traders. I'd be curious as to what you found out? Cathie
