What is the spacing on the warp?

Have a good day!

Hi Franco! I put a new picture with the frame .The space is 2 ó 3 mm.  You can see this on the picture.  Now, I am going to put some stitchs, and the finishing of the work. Have a nice day!

Hi, this is probably ridiculously basic, but does it matter if you use an odd or an even number of warps when you do tapestry? Many thanks from a newbie,

Ellen

Ellen,

Good question and the answer is-- no, it doesn't matter if there are odd or even threads in tapestry.  The only time you might want to consider placing an odd number of threads in the warp is if you wanted to do pick and pick from edge to edge... with an odd number of threads, both selvedges would be the same color then.

Thanks, Tommye!  You don't know how long I've wondered about that!

The def. of tapestry is a covered with warp with the possibility of a discontnuous weft-doesn't move from side.

A nice weaving, but is it tapestry?

Hi Graciela,

I was unable to get the link to work. Have you added this to your Projects on Weavolution?  There is a Help topic here for assistance with adding a Project to your notebook.  I would love to see your tapestry.

Hi Kate, you're right. In Spanish, in fact, we call it "minitextil", not tapestry.  Your definition is correct. In this minitextil, just the sky and the rainbow would be in tapestry technique. The correct name would probably be "mixed." (mixed techniques.).  Thanks for your comment. In Argentina, the National Tapestry Show has changed its name to National Textile Arts Show, ( Salón Nacional de Arte Textil) because many of the works are not tapestry.

Hi Kathe,

Pictorial weaving is another title sometimes used for nontraditional tapestry.  The "tapestries" I have been the most impressed with over the years are really not 100% tapestry, but have other techniques added or the artist has broken some or all of the tapestry rules.  The instructor's exhibit at Convergence l978 in Colorado had one of my favorite nontraditional tapestries, which was a sample, about 18 inches by 24 inches by Hans Krondahl woven for a large commission.   I studied that one for a very long time.  Another was at Convergence in Seattle in l982 in an exhibit of weaving from Scandinavia.  My favorite was a small tapestry using fabric strips for weft.  It was very non-traditionally woven as well.  And on this subject, I have a friend who did not weave traditional tapestry techniques, but her tapestries were spectacular and she wove many commission pieces.  She is a very creative artist.  She exhibited in many venues, but was never accepted into tapestry exhibits which only include traditional tapestries.  I think that this a difference in perspective between art groups and groups which are specifically tapestry.

I am glad that you started this group with the title small format.  It makes sense to weave traditional tapestry in a smaller size, since it is time consuming.  But whether traditional techniques or nontradidtional, tapestry is the most challenging and the most satisfying and rewarding of weaving techniques.  I hope to convey that each time I teach.
