Hi,

I got three samples, same color of boring beige, with even tone - what i did was increase my bath volume from 45:1 to 55:1 and used a wide mouth jar (not sure if that did anything)

Karren,

do you think i need to redo my entire pure library using the new ratio of 55:1 or just the ones that were not even.

thanks.

That is a 22% change in bath volume.  If it were 10% or less I'd say it's probably ok.  How can we test to see if it makes a difference?

You increased the volume because you were having trouble getting level dyeings, right?  Do you have any level dyeings or Boring Beige at the 45:1 liquor ratio?  If you do then I would compare it to one you did at 55:1 looking for changes in value and hue.

Ok, i just took out my problem children from the last batch, using the 55:1 ratio - they look groovy - i will chip them and compare them to the originals of 45:1 - if they are significantly different I will redo all - if not, i'll move forward with the mixed colors - should have them chipped in about 1 or 2 hours.

Chipping.  Todays heat reminds me of a childhood summer treat; chips of ice from the big blocks of ice delivered by a man and a horse drawn wagon to the house next door that used an ice box.  We had a Refrigerator, but all the kids scrambled to get ice chips from the delivery man on days like today.

My dad remembers that vividly - his father owned a bar and they had a shed in the back yard that the blocks of ice would keep the cooler with the beer cold all summer long. They got the ice from the lake. He wants John to illustrate a story along those lines. If he ever does, i'll be sure to get you a copy!

OK, now for the real stuff - i redyed the sketchy chips - here are the new against the old. The munsell notation did change on a few -

If you were in my shoes, would you redye the entire pure range with the increased ratio of 55?

I think i'll probably redo them because it needs to be done.

I'm kinda of glad this happened, because i really understand the ratio of the liquor to the difference in fibers.

I don't think you are going to be happy with them until you do :-(

Redo pure colors and have better data for mixing colors  OR go with what you have and do more trials , probably, since your pure color data is a bit off.

If there was a change it was consistantly lighter with the larger liquor ratio.  More water to react with the dye.  What a pain these dyes are.

No kidding! I did 6 this morning, and have had the other 22 since late afternoon - i may fall behind for this week because i have to go do family things mon/tues... but will try to have my scarlet done before class. i can't believe i have done the entire cotton library 3 times!! i wish i could dye cotton with lanaset!

You'll catch up.  I survived 14 family members in the house for a week, you can do 2 days......deep breathing and red wine.

The one on the left was done about 1 week ago. The one on the right was last night. on the yellows - you can see the one of the right is washed out - i'm not going to continue chipping the rest of them - chock it up to experience.

What's your guess as to why the navy isn't as dark as it should be. The only thing i can think of is that in the boil at the end, instead of 15 minutes, it may have been 30 - all of my colors are washed out -

maybe my dye stock is dying? when i get home tomorrow - i'm remixing the dye stocks and going for the 4th set. no issues - i want it right - it's all part of being a "colorist"!

on the plus side, the 55:1 ratio is a good one for me. I may bump it to 60 since i will be redoing the entire library because the 6 i did yesterday morning are suspect now.

i had a glass jar break on me last night - the bottom came off - not a distaster because it held the liquid until i picked up the jar to remove it!

glad for the break today - not the jar breaking kind, a break from dyeing!

That does seem like the most obvious reason for lighter other than the increased liquor ratio.

And these dyes are more well behaved than Procion MX.  How do people get addicted to MX?  beyond me.

I changed my liquor ratio from 40:1 to 50:1, and noticed that my colors were lighter as well.

On the broken jar, was this with the boiling bath?  Are you using a spacer?  I have been wondering if I need to be using a spacer with my boiling jars in a graniteware canner pot.

I am using a spacer in my Weck canner and have had no issues.

My stocks are as old as the very first trial we did for beige - 4 or 5 weeks ago - winding skeins at my sisters - i hoping to drum up a few fiber people tonight for a winding bee! (i can hope!)

no spacer - but might put down a towel from here on out -
