OK, so once we have our colours, after we say "yippie!" or "oh good god what am I going to do with these?", I think we need to come up with color schemes.  Because my palate is a tan trending toward pumpkin, not my traditional colours, I walked around my house looking for places that might combine my colors with ones I really like.  I didn't have to look very far - this is Juno laying on our new wool rug, being agreeable about holding my color card.  What do you think?  At least any dog hairs inadvertantly woven in won't be noticable, and these colors with dark blue look pretty good.Looking for nice complementary colors

Yeah Queezle, I love the photo. I think your approach to looking for further color inspiration is a great one!

What I've noticed so far is that although we all have our favorite colors, it would seem we all have surrounded ourselves with nearly all colours. It doesn't take us long to see find our colours in our surroundings! :)

I did a Queezle search this morning. Opened my eyes to new color combinations. My gray green card doesn't match the cat, but a throw rug or pillow with orchid, tropical fruit yellow, and grayed sage with a gray cat laying on it would not be bad.

Dilemma #2. How to find yarn in 2 shades of gray green. Going on an Internet hunt this Sunday. Where did I put my safari hat?

Realization. I need to think of the color combinations from 2 angles: interweaving colors into a color weave pattern and weaving color in blocks. Exploration could be using the same color combination in both methods.

Theresa, your colors remind me of the yellow and orange color play I engaged with earlier in the year, with the turned Ms and Os project, but your project combines the two colors.

Finding yarns of specific colors:  Halcyon yarn's web site has a color wheel, you can dial in your color, and they will show you what yarns they carry that match that color.  I've never used their yarns, but this resource looks awesome!  They seem to have an especially deep assortment of colors of 10/2 pearle cotton.  Does anyone know if they ever have sales?

I am a fan of Halcyon. Instead of sales, they will send a discount code for your next order. I have found the value was worth more than a sale item elsewhere. My favorite way to save is their mini-cones. I can get 3 colors, instead of 1 in a large quantity. Plus, they include weaving info in their product descriptions.

thread looking like a close match.  The picture was taken this morning.  I  rechecked the colors this afternoon and they look different.  I've also been using the random stripe generator from Biscuits and Jam to look at different color combinations.  I am so color challenged!

Like so many others I got the colors I least wanted. I find them boring and uninteresting, and I see no way I can make use of them. So I started to think that I will have to drown them in something better. I started with a look at my yarn stash, beginning with my handspun. I have been spinning on a spindle for many years, and I have recently started on a spinning wheel, so I have a lot of handspun yarn that I have spun with the sole purpose of spinning for fun and for learning. 

Here is what I found. Now I will have to find yarn in the two challenging colors,- yes there are only two different colors on the card, though they look like four different colors. Actually there is a yarn shop in the neighborhood, that I have not yet visited. I will start there.

I am considering a different strategy for the color challenge, rather than matching yarns to the specific colors, creating cloth that reads as the colors without matching the specific colors.  Osma Tod put magical warps on her studio looms that read subtle neutral gray using a wide variety of colors.  In application to my blush colors, I also think about how makeup is blended as an explanation for what I am considering.

I am now madly in love with Queezle's dog.  I have a Pinterest board for yarn on which I particularly enjoy collecting yarns that are inspired by pictures.  For the color challenge, I should also look at multicolored yarns on that board that include matches for my blush colors.

Oh Francine, what an interesting idea!  Osma Tod must have been such an interesting person, and I just love your idea.  Its very much out of the box thinking.  I was a huge L.Frank Baum fan as a child, so I have trouble getting past her first name.

Also, I just know that Juno would be similarly madly in love with you.  She is, of course, the best dog in the world.  She only had to chew on one skein of yarn (sadly, it was alpaca) to learn to leave it alone. 

Maybe we should share pinterest boards and instagrams?  My instagram is arabidopsis_22, and its got way too many photos of my dog, plus for the relatives, I've been instagraming the steps of weaving using my current projects.  But I had not thought about a pinterest board for my weaving colors.  Great idea!

Theresa, you have a beautiful sunset or a patch of Rudbekia and of course Queezle, you have a Golden Retriever!  I'm looking in my seed catalogs from this past winter for ideas on my colors.  Maybe crocuses?  Maybe just samples to start?

Joyce - green is my thing!  Yours is the closest to what I would think of as my colors of any i've seen yet.  They remind me of easter, of the color of Aracauna chicken eggs, and small plants that are just starting to grow.  Greens go great with so many colors, such as with purple for the the recently posted Wee Swedish Coverlet.  I predict you will have lots of fun.

My pup does look a bit like a golden; she is 1/2 yellow lab and 1/2 standard poodle (a labradoodle) but without the poodle hair, and sadly, without the poodle's no-shed feature.  But she is lovable for sure!

Its fun to see everyone's colors, and I am predicting an interesting year ahead.

I see Spring in my colors.  Thus the seed and flower catalogs that arrive in the dead of winter are going to inspire me! My go to colors tend toward the fall colors so this challenge is certainly going to push me into a new color realm.

Not the pretty Victoria Secret pinks but more of the dusty-rose pinks...EXACTLY the color I just purchased IN BULK ON SALE so I can overdye it to a desired eggplant I want to work with!  I guess I will be learning to love me some dusty pink just the way it is!

how everyone seems to like all the cards except the one that they received.  I guess that is part of the challenge.  I love the colors that Joyce and EvaHall have, those I can work with right out of the stash.  Actually just looking at my stash I think I have some yarns that will work for me.  They are some mill ends that I bought then wondered what the heck I was going to do with them.  Now I know.  This means I might have to set tapestry aside for a while because I will need a floor loom for this project and they are all occupied right now.

I love your colors! I can just imagine a thin stripe of bright cyan cutting through those oranges, or a streak of lime green, keyed to a specific part of the design.

What does everyone think about Rio's Olympic palette of citrus colors this summer?

And, don't forget about proportion. You don't have to use a ton of every color. You can use a sliver of a target color, and surround it with something else. A little bit of pink surrounded by black or grey can be pretty powerful.

P.S. Thor, I feel your pain. I think "cheap polyester suit from the 80's" when I think "mauve".

Alas Sally, my colors are not orange, they are brown, two shades of chocolate brown. Actually, they are quite pleasant, they are just not my colors. Lime green could be an option, but blue does not seem to work well with the colors. I have tried several shades of blue. Right now I am thinking that I might just let the colors come forth as they are and not try to make them into something else, which was my first impulse.

Eva, your colors look so orange on my computer - almost mango-like.

I really like most browns with light blues - but of course that would depend on the tone of the brown.  Maybe with greens?  I think, though, that what we want is not colors that are immediately easy to use.  Rather we want colors that push us.  And I am really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

I am going to be placing a yarn order with Brassard's this coming week so I pulled out yarns and my color challenge card to make a yarn decision.  I have an idea of what to weave so now it is just time to plan things out.  I am going to end up using quite a few different colors, but here is what I found for the challenge card.

The yarns are not an exact match, but it is as close as I can get with the yarn I want to use.  It will still be a while til this happens since I do not have an naked floor loom at this time and I am still captivated by tapestry and braiding.  But for now I have my palette picked out and I can keep letting it stew in the back of my mind.

I ordered my first colorway. (Is that the correct word?) Queezle's suggestion to use the Color Picker at halcyon.com helped immensely. I looked up the hex code for sage green. Put it in the Color Picker. Voila. They listed the fibers they had for sale in that color range. You can even get suggestions of coordinating colors based on the color wheel. I made my own decisions on the additional colors.

I was determined to select a subdued palette this time. Muted greens with a matte siver gray or mushroom brown. Just could not keep that pink and violet out of the mix. They are all dusky colors. Are they too close in value to be interesting?

I've been quiet about my color project.  I have a silly idea that I am going to try to put to work, though I have yet to decide on a purpose for the fabric that I make.  It will be small and silly, thats all I promise.  And it will help me to move toward a bigger project.

Thor's description of his dusty pink yarn gave me more ideas. If I think of my colors as dusty green rather than grayed green, I see desert colors.

Thinking of different ways of using color...

  1. Color in blocks or stripes - bold or subtle.
  2. Color in patterns - background or accent.
  3. Color in plaid - a second color laid over.
  4. Color twined - 2 colors twisted and woven as one.

I think of gray-greens as being sage green, and that is certainly a desert color (not to be confused with a dessert color, not many desserts that are green, let along grey-green).

And I like your color break-down.

Another way I think about it: use big differences in value to have strong impact and a high-energy fabric, or focus on analagous colors for a peacefully harmonizing fabric.

My silliness will involve blocks of color.  The idea hit me in the middle of a day intended for high focus and creativity (writing), and out of nowhere, this silly idea.  And of course it became one of those intrusive ideas that elbows everything out of its way. 

I almost have a naked loom, so now its time to start gathing my materials.

Makes me think. This first project my challenge was totally focused on the gray of my color. Grayed, muted colors are foreign to my world. Finding yarn in that shade and a color combination that works for me felt challenging.

 

Next project I will go into crazy mode to create a real challenge for myself.

Pinks

Got my colors yesterday, digitally.  They are somewhat out of my usual range, but lovely!  I also have a couple of questions about the process.

Are there any "guidelines" e.g. are we limited to the colors on the card?

Since I asked to get these digitally, I not positive that my screen is accurately showing them. These are pink, right?  Though the top one looks fuscia/purplish to me.  Can anyone read the names, or tell me what shows up on your screen?

Looking forward to this!

Glyn,  those are pinks on my screen too. Do not worry. There are no Weavolution Police for this Challenge. Your words,  "...out of my usual range", say the colors you see challenge you. That was the intent of the Color Challenge.

The criteria, as I understand it, is the Challenge runs for a year. During that time weave an item using at least two of the colors from your card. You can add other colors to your project, but you must use 2 from your card. You can do as many items as you want during the year.

Pink has become a really hip color - called the "new neutral" and lots of design magazines show interiors with walls about the color of your bottom pink.  I know that Francine also has pinks - I'm wondering how they compare to your pinks. 

10ashus has it right on the rules.  You can eliminate one of the three colors on your card, and add other colors (I think any number of additional colors). 

I just love pinks with charcoal grey, but also other pink combinations are terrific.  You will have a blast with this.

I know I ordered the yarn that I need to do my challenge last week, but the way I have been sucked into the braid and band rabbit hole, who knows, maybe my challenge will be braided or inkled!  Just as long as I use the colors, right?

Queezle colors with color wheel

I think my darkest color looks a lot like a yellow-orange tone, which is achieved by mixing yellow-orange with black.

Does this mean that the color wheel's typical good color combinations (split complementary or analagous, triad, etc) would be the shades of the predicted complements for yellow-orange?

That is, yellow orange, in a split complementary, would have blue and violet as the colors to add.  Would I expect to use the tones of those colors (adding black)?  Or would I expect that, if my base color is yellow-orange, I could use blue and violet (without going for the tone)?

I would say any values ( tone) would look okay when picking your second color.

While reviewing my color theory notes, a new theory came to mind. I immediately go to color combinations. I should first know what effect I want. Then, will I use hue, value, or both?

  1. Hue: name (position on the color wheel)
  2. Value: amount of white or gray in the hue. Use to direct the eye and set a mood.

Greater contrast in hue or value - bolder fabric, drama.

Less contrast in hue or value - quieter fabric, calm.

Toasted cashew reminds me of very expensive Coach leather briefcases.  The color works in fashion as a rich, elegant warm neutral.  Color wheel discussion leaning toward orange makes me wonder whether those with similar colors would care to challenge each other to do something Halloweenish--just one month until Halloweave.

These are the colors I had collected for tea towels; a few are close to the colors on my card (the colors don't show true in the photo, though, so you have to take my word for it).  My yarns are more yellow than the color chips, but they're close.
