• 16" Harp loom
  • Heddle width: 15"
  • Heddle size: 10
  • Fiber: 8/2 cotton (3360 yrd/lb)
  • Towel finished size: 14 X 22 inches

I have been reading about kitchen towels. The 14 inches width was the lowest number for average dish towel width. One weaver said for absorpancy and softness she likes 8/2 cotton, a size 10 heddle with double threads in the warp and single threads in the weft. I used 20 epi in the warp calculation since the threads were doubled..

According to the Weavolution Calculator, I would need 16.8 inches weaving width on the loom.

I reduced the finished width to 12.5 inches and that gave a weaving width of 15 inches. Can I use the entire heddle width?

Will 12.5 inches width look wrong for a towel? more like an extra long dish washing rag?

Yes, you can use the entire heddle width. When you wind the warp on, you just want to be especially carefully that the edge threads stay on your packing material. It would be good if you have a packing material that exactly matches the width of your warp beam.

woven the full width of my heddles but like Erica cautionsed make sure your edge threads are well supported or you will have tension issues. Be very vigilant in the winding of the warp for the same reason.

I feel confident now, knowing it can be done and knowing what to look out for.
