I will be visiting Croatia. Does anyone know what kind of textiles I could be running into? Cathie

A friend of mine, Bette Kelley, here in the village mounted an exhibits of Slinge Croation Cutwork and embroidery a few years ago. It is unique in its technique.  The 1st exhibit was in Louisville KY at the The Embroiderers' Guild of America and there is an article in their journal, Needlearts, vol. XXXVIII, Number 4, December 2007. Later she mounted some of it at the Dayton Art Institute.

One of the most interesting things to me was the combination of hand woven cloth, crochet and the Slinge cutwork. What I have pictured here are household linens, but it is also found in the National or traditional cosutumes.

Karren I can't thank you enough! Absolutely stunning handwork! I'm sure I'll be able to find some examples this. Thank you. Cathie

A chance to find any textiles is very slim unless you visit a museum or folk dance show or you know someone who can show you family heirlooms.  If you have a day in Zagreb, go visit Ethnographic museum that has a wonderful collection of textiles. Every region in Croatia historically has it's own costumes with amazing embroidery, cutwork, lace, but it's not something people stil wear. The same needlework was used for bed linen, table linen, towels etc, but it all died long time ago. The only thing that is still done traditionally is lace from island Pag.  Look it up here http://www.paska-cipka.com/en/ .  It is beautiful and you can buy a piece in museum or good souvenir stores.

There is also a very good Ethnographic museum in Split and a number of small regional museums and collections all over Croatia.

Thank you Toronto, I heard about the lace making. I was hoping to get to the Island of Pag, but I don't think it will be possible. I'm hoping that I'll be able to find the lace being sold in other cities. It's very good to know about the museums! Thank you, Cathie

Wow, that is gorgeous, thank you so much for sharing it! My grandma was from Croatia, so I'm always interested in seeing things from there?
