Hi weavers, I am still a total novice and experimenting a bit before I go to a workshop for some hands-on instruction. I would like to try making a small rag rug with weft cut from strips of cotton fabric (on bolts). How do I determine how many yards of fabric for the rug?

It really depends on how wide your strips are and the weight of your fabric.  Usually I just wing it and keep track over time.  However, you can get a fabric of a similar weight, cut it to the correct thickness and then twist it hard and measure how wide it is.  From that, you can figure out your approximate picks per inch and multiply the whole thing out for the width of your fabric.

I run rag rug workshops and tell my students that for a 2.5x4 ft rug and a set of 4-6 placemats to bring 3-5 lbs of material.

Thanks for your great advice. I'll give it a try!
