I need to weave something at 28 ends per inch in 8/2 cotton. I have a good assortment of reeds, and would like to avoid reed marks. Which do you think will work better:  Sleying 3-4 in an 8 dent reed or 2-2-3 in a 12 dent? I did something similar  but in cottolin, using the 12 dent and did get reed marks which did not wash out, they weren't altogether objectionable though.  Thoughts?

Finer reeds give a better division of the threads and with less sticking of the threads.

That was kind of my thought.. glad to have it confirmed. Reed marks not withstanding, 4 ends to a dent seemed a bit much.  Thanks. Joanne....

What are making that you decided to set 8/2 at 28 epi?  I am making towels from 8/2, my first 8/2 project, and I'm trying to figure out a good set. It's a huck check with 3 end floats.

With huck you'll want a more open sett than normal plain weave, but not by much. Madelyn's book recommends 20 epi for laces with 8/2.

As to the 28 epi, if I had a 10 dent reed, I'd go 30 epi. Less chances of sleighing errors, and dense and open stripes. Must be a twill with 3-4 end floats? A year ago I could sleigh a reed with my glasses left on (near sighted), not now. And I'm only 47 with perfect health. I try to make sleighing as easy as possible. :)

The 28 epi is just the parameter I decided on for this particular exercise. It has no bearing on what I would do for an actual project.
