I am starting my first project on a floor loom that has 8 shafts and 10 treadles.  My current project will be woven on 4 shafts and the treadling draft requires the following sequence:

1 and 2, then 3 and 4 repeated 4 times.

next

2 and 3 then 1 and 4 repeated 4 times.

next

3 and 4 then 1 and 2 repeated 4 times.

and finally

1 and 4 then 2 and 3 repeated 4 times.

So it would seem to me that I need to set up just 4 treadles tied to 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4 and 1 and 4.

If I've got that right, I plan to tie 1 and 2 to the farthest right hand treadle, 3 and 4 to the farthest left hand pedal, then 1 and 4 to 4th treadle from right and 2 and 3 to 4th treadle from left,resulting in the following tie-up from left to right:

3 and 4, space, space, 2 and 3, space, space, 1 and 4, space, space, 1 and 2

Have I got it right?

And I tie-up my twills like this:  from left to right, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 1-4.  I do not leave untied treadles between because I do not want to have to stradle anymore space than need be.  I want my treadles next to each other so I can just slide my feet treadle to treadle.  It is what works for me.  As for the treadling order, that just works out as you go.  You will find a rhythm once you start into it.  If tabby treadles are needed, they get tied on the outside of the 4 that are tied up ie:  13 on the left, 24 on the right.

I would think about how you are moving your feet on the treadles.  Your tie would work (right-left, left-right, left-right, right-left)

3/4  <------------------ 1/2

           2/3 ----->1/4

3/4  -------------------> 1/2

          2/3 <------ 1/4

My preference would be to tie up  3/4, 1/4, 2/3, 1/2.

This would give a right-left, right-left sequence for the first 8 picks.  Then you will go left-right for the next 8 picks.

Whichever is easier for you to treadle and remember.  If this is a straight draw threading then the shaft weight is the same.  You don't have to leave spaces between treadles unless this makes it easier for you to visualize.  If you are using a jack loom and have to raise half the threads at a time for plain weave, then normally the outer treadles make the lifting easier.

Oh, and yes I would tend to tie up like teresasc noted because I'd probably have the tabby weave tie ups on the outside.
