Hi! My dad and I are restoring a Newcomb Studio Art loom. Has anyone replaced the metal rod/bolt tie ups to string or chain? Would you recommend it? Any other alterations we can make to improve function or just make my weaving life easier? Thank you!

I am anxious to find this out too because I have 2 of these looms that were my mother's looms and one 8 shaft version that my father built for me.

The loom I worked on had thread rod with nuts to tie the lamms to the treadles.  Thread rod is, well, threaded rod!  You buy it at the hardware store where they sell unthreaded metal rod.

My question really is: Can you replace the rods with texolve loop cord to make it much easier to change the tie up. Does this work well. i haven't tried because I fear it will be hard to get it adjusted right, especially on the 8 shaft homemade loom.

Try the tie-up with whatever's around the house and see if you like the flexible tie-ups.  The threadrod tended to abrade the holes in the treadles.  I converted a folding 8 shaft Minerva to Texsolv in order to make it more likely to get the shed even.  Worked like a charm.
