So I was given a Leclerc Nilus that has been sitting in someone's shed for four years. After bringing it home I noticed that it has no treadles. The shafts are all there, as are the tie ups, but no treadles. Is there a reason why I couldn't just make treadles? Is there something special about their weight? Is there a place to find used treadles or parts for a loom?

TIA!

They supply a lot of LeClerc loom parts and may be able to help you find some treadles.

There's nothing magic about nilus treadles, they're basically just varnished sticks with holes drilled in one end for the axle and screw eyes in the other end for the tieups.  Search Google images for LeClerc Nilus to see some examples.  If you're absolutely sure that the donor no longer has the treadles (certainly worth checking) then go ahead and make new ones.

You should be able to make treadles if you have someone that does wood working. They may be sticks of wood, but you still need to know dimensions and also measurements for any hole drilling. Things have to line up and balance.

I have a Kebec with extra sets of treadles.  At this point, I'm not interested in selling any, but I think that most front hinged Leclerc treadles are the same.  They hinge from several inches in front of the loom.  If  you would like to make your own, I can give you measurements and pics.
