I'm not really sure there is enough shafts here for full fledged crepe, but I'm also using double weave and I have just 8 shafts. I also have opened the set from 16 to 8 epi per layer and beating lightly. I want an open weave is the idea behid this sample. So far so good. I wove in the ends 2 by 2 undulating the threads for 4 shots to close in the end of this tube like double weave. I'm seeing how stetchy this will be for a hat. It can't be tight on the noggen as anyone knows that hurts your head. Mine at least. And it has to shrink some to fill a little. So for now a real narrow piece to fool around with. :)

Hi Cheryl. It's not stretchy enough for what we are used to as a beanie or toque hat. I also tried two ply. A little more stretchy, but still not what your used to. What I'm going to try is felting the single ply for a felted hat. I have some surplus yarn here to play around with. When single is weaved up in this draft it makes a double walled tube. And ply gives 4 ply walls. No wind would ever go through either.

I have some other drafts I want to experiment on as wel.

that the weave of the yarn makes them act differently than when we knit.  I started in fiber as a knitter and yes, I can see how weaving would make the yarn less stretchy.  Being new to this is a learning experience every step of the way.  I really never thought how the yarns react with different structures.

to see what you eventually end up with - I love all this experimentation! Tina

Wondering how much stretch your crepe has on the bias?

ReedGuy

There is more streth diagonally, then straight across the width or length. And yes, I did go look at the knit webbing of different items and it's kind of like a wrist band of a watch compared to weaving. There are knitting looms, but not like we are using. ;)

I am new to weaving, so this is likely really out there, but would it be possible to weave a little bit of the elastic yarn knitters sometimes use in making socks, maybe almost the way people put a thread in for woven Shibori? Weave the elastic relaxed, then pull it a little once off the loom to get a tiny bit of stretch?

ReedGuy

I'm sure if you used nylon/wool mix you would get a stretchy fabric. It would be a lot more elastic. Would take some sampling to find out.

How's them for apples?

I need a little practice on making even seems, but didn't do too bad. Still, I like the feal of the hat when fulled using this weave structure. Not too tight on the noggen either. :)

Those are fine looking apples - uuhhh, hat and scarf. :)

I think I will stick to knitting hats however - I can get one knitted in about 2 hours so for me it is more efficient to knit - but give me a loom for a scarf an day! Love your color choices!

ReedGuy

It would take me for ever to knit one. Plus it's denser and fuller. :)
