Hello all and thank you in advance for your assistance. I am new to weaving, have some experience on a RHL and have never used a floor loom. I just became the proud owner of a 48 inch Cranbrook 4/6. It needs some help so here are questions. The tie ups are chain, can these be changed to Texsolv everywhere? Can I change the chain from the jacks to the shafts also? Does anyone have a manual for probably mid-1970s for this loom? I have emailed the person mentioned in other threads who has the site with many old manuals but have not heard back from her yet. Does any one have a few pictures of this generation of the loom as I can probably figure it out from there? The metal on the side of the shafts is very rusty. Does anyone already have a solution for replacing those? Thank you! Linette

Does anyone know if the treadle bar goes with the bar to the top or toward the floor? Thanks, Linette

Hi, Linette, welcome to Weavolution, I was surprised no one had responded to your earlier post.  I can't help you with your cranbrook, but on the shafts you can try steel wool to remove the rust.  Maybe someone else here can chime in.

can be used for the tie-up.  Schacht makes these looms now and they have changed the tie-up to Texsolv.  It would help to make the treadling easier, as then you would not have to be moving the weight of all that chain.   Maybe Schacht can help you with your questions about the shafts.

Thank you to the people who have responded.

Joanne- If I decide to replace the tie-up with Texsolv, am I correct that I just need to maintain the same measurements as the chain?  Some of the chain is rusty so it is either replace the chain or install Texsolv.

Next question for the group-  The loom came with old string heddles which I am going to install just to get to play with it.  It also came with metal heddles, flat with a twist at the eye which do not fit over the wooden harness frames.  How do you install these?  Lastly, should I put Texsolve heddles on and what are the benefits to doing so?

Thank you for your expertise and time,

I am sooooo excited,

Linette

Cranbrook looms do not work with flat metal heddles - these are from some other loom. This happens often with purchases of used equipment. The string heddles are quite sturdy - I have a loom from 1975 and still use the original string heddles.

Those string heddles work nicely, wax the top of the harness shafts with beeswax and they will slide nicely. Unless they are soiled I'd keep them. The treadle bar that holds your treadle goes towards the floor. I am assuming you are talking about the rod that holds the treadles in place.

The loom is together, has made a sampler of plain weave and twill and I just completed my first rag rug. A huge "Thank you" to Sara who sent me a copy of the original instructions. I love my loom and am having fun learning the art of weaving! Linette
