Hello everyone

I have just bought a swedish floor loom, 4 shaft, the lady I bought it from had it in pieces and there were no instructions with it. I am a beginner to weaving, so although I have managed to put it up, where I have run into difficulties is in tying the shafts to the wooden pieces that fit between the shafts and the treadles, and then tying to the treadles. There are 6 treadles. It appears that the way the shafts are mounted you have to tie 1 and 3 together to lift at the same time, and the same with 2 and 4,

Can anyone help with telling me, how I tie them to the treadles to lift the shafts, and if I am right in thinking that the way this loom is designed you can only weave tabby, or is there some way I can get the shafts to lift independently so I can weave other patterns.

Thank you anyone and everyone

Tamara

If you go to the Glimakra website, Joanne has posted information about tieing up this type of loom.  I don't know the URL off-hand but a quick Google should give you the site.

cheers,

I am unable to help you with your question on tie-ups for floor looms as  I've only used table looms or a Dobby floor loom.

However, I think if you go to the weaving forum and post your question there, hopefully a more experienced weaver will be able to help you (sorry I can't work out which group you originally posted to).

I hope you get your loom all set to weave soon!

Hi Tamara,

Be assured that any four shaft loom can weave more than plain weave.  You just need to learn more about tie-ups.  I will send you some information that I am preparing to put up on our website on the page where used looms are listed.  It will give you some basic information that will be very helpful.  You might also want to purchase a copy of my book, Learning to Warp your Loom.

I second the recommendation for Joanne's book.  It is easy to read, instructions are clear and well described and it is a terrific resource.  I have warped my "new-to-me" Swedish loom about  15 times and I never do it without Joanne's book at my side.

Tamara, Laura is right. Go to GlimakraUSA and call or email Joanne(1-866-890-7314 or 1-406-442-0354) . She has a book on tying up a countermarch looms. You really need to get it. I got one and I'm really glad I did. The sticks between the harnesses and the treadles are called lamms. Good luck and have fun weaving.........Steve
