Hello, Just wondering what the standard reed height is for the Large Macs? (as opposed to the portable version) What would be the downside of using a 4" reed? (4 1/2 from edge to edge)

We use what reed we have on hand. The only thing is you may get a smaller shed opening.

Do you know what the standard height is? Anyone? Thanks! Connie

My reeds are from Gowdey Reed. They're 5" from edge to edge, and the opening is 3.5". They're just fine - nary a complaint here.

Connie I have a SS reed marked Macomber, it is 5 inch. We use reeds from 4", 4 1/2" to 5". Is 5" standard? I don't know.

Michael, On your Macomber reed that is 5 inches, is that from theoutside edges or just the length of the dents to the inside? This is a bit like figuring out how to measure heddles. lol Thanks! Connie

Thanks Debbie! It seems that different reed mfgrs have different size headers and that makes it confusing. The inside measurment is really what matters, I assume. You say that yours is 3.5", so that gives me a range of what works. I have a reed that is 4 1/2" wide from outside to outside and the inside dent length is 3 1/2". Thanks! Connie

That is 5" outside measurment. As I stated above any reed will work. No, a heddle "has" to be the right size. Any reed that fits in the slot of the beater will work. The beater is adjustable for that reason.
