I live in the boonies, and I want a pick-up stick NOW for my RH loom.  I'm going into town to the hardware store tomorrow, and want to get some wood molding to make my own pick-up sticks.  However, I'm so new at this, I've not seen a pick-up stick in person. (Sad, but true)  Quick:  what is the width and thickness of the wood?  I'm assuming the stick has to be as long as the width of what I'm weaving.  I've been looking at them on line, and I can see what I'll have to do with the wood, but need help with dimensions.  Thanks!  I think I'm bringing frugality and impatience to a new level...

About the size of a wooden yardstick, maybe 1" x 1/4".

Hello, yes as mentioned, think yard stick. They are usually well rounded on the ends.1/4" lath should be available at your local lumber co..The big box stores, Home Depot,Lowes, etc.usually have "hobby" boards in oak and poplar 1/4"x 1 1/2"-2"x 2'.Poplar is a good choice, as it has a close grain(less slivers).Frank- TheLoominary

Just the information I needed!  I made a stick shuttle from a larger paint stirrer, this will be pretty cool if I make the pick up stick from poplar!  Frank, I really like the new "make it yourself" group you started.  If anyone has ideas for small, beginner projects, accessories, etc., I love to see some of those.

Lowe's doesn't carry poplar in a size good for a pick up stick or shuttle, and the pine molding looked flimsy.  So, I bought several yardsticks.  They're under a $1.00, and I can practice on them.  Then, when I go to the BIG city, I'll get some nice wood at a woodcrafting store.  If the yardpick doesn't work, I can always measure something with it.

Hi illoominated, sounds like a plan, and you'll always know how wide the warp is! Frank.
