What lovely rich colors. Can't wait to see this finished.

That's great work!  I've admired the graphics in that rug too.  Since you took a conference with Ms Tallarovic I was wondering if you can tell me why she likes to wind the fabric strips with both right sides facing upwards rather than back to bacK? Her explanation in the book doesn't make sense to me, back to back would seem to me to keep the wrong side from showing. Now that you've done this rug do you like the denser sett better than the more open setts? Cotton cones sit below the warping board ready for a rep weave table runner set so I've got rep on the brain!

I do not know why the strips are both right side up, but I do know that she instructed us on how to always fold the strips in half lengthwise so the right side of the fabric is showing on both sides. Although this is a slow process, it does produce excellent results. For the placemats I have made I have only used a single strip of fabric instead of doubling it. It has worked fine and made a sturdy enough mat, although I am sure that if I had doubled the strips, it would make them even sturdier.

A word of caution about the book (although you may already know this): There are quite a few errors. Interweave Press has a site with corrections that is worth taking note of. http://www.interweave.com/corrections/weaving.asp

I hope to see your project soon. I am sure you will enjoy it.

In her book she has a photo of laying the 2 strips onto her ski shuttle so I take it she folds the weft shot at the loom.  Several of the rag rug weavers on the Rugtalk forum wind balls & their shuttles with the cloth folded so that the fold becomes "pressed" in so to speak, that is the process I'm going to take.  And thanks for the heads up on the errata. It's a nice book but I wish she went into much more & clearer details on the designing process and less on the basics of loom warping.

How do you cut your fabric for the weft.  I just bought some sheets at the thrift store and now wonder how to get even and usable weft.

Lovely Rug.

The warp has 2 threads per heddle. I took a great ripsmatta workshop at the Conference of Northern California Handweavers in 2007 from Joanne Tallarovic. I was hooked and made several sets of placemats. We had just remodeled our bathroom and my husband insisted that he did not want to turn in his black bathtowel for the smoky blue one that I wanted to go with the tile. Joanne had this design in her book Rep Weave and Beyond. It was challenging more challenging than the designs I had been making. I used her colors and killed two birds with one stone: increasing my skill and satisying my husband's desire to keep his black bath towel.

This was made from many colors of carpet warp (for the warp) and 1-inch strips of fabric for the weft. (I don't seem to be able to enter these in the fields above.)
