How did you wind the warp? Did you tie each one individually so that the colors fell in horizontal ikat-like bands? I'm brand new to weaving so many techniques and ideas are not yet intuitive for me.

Thanks,

Kathryn

I was glad you told about how using the smaller weight yarn in the weft will accentuate the warp threads, as well as not beating it "too closely."  I love experimenting, especially if I can use my stash yarns, so this is great information.

I think this is such a fun idea. As I told you before I am borrowing your picture for my backstrap WAL group...thanks :-)

This is wonderful!!  I love the way it turned out.   I have a space-dyed knitting yarn I've been wanting to use in a tapestry/wall hanging with a warp ikat effect and I've been struggling with how I was going to do it so that the yarn showed through all the way down.  Using a wider spacing in the warp and a thinner weft might just do the trick.  Thanks for sharing your work; we all learn so much from each other, don't we?

Thank you for the kind words.  I did a lot of trial for the weft yarn, putting in then pulling out just about everything in my stash to find the right yarn that showed the ikat. I can't wait to see yours when it is done.

Notes

I used Sensations Rainbow Classic Acrylic Yarn in Bright Multi Rainbow color to make a Faux Ikat Pattern in the Warp as an example for my Mom to see what Ikat looks like.  Since I had warped the loom with it, I decided to make this weaving as a sample of what a Faux Ikat pattern looks like. I used a 5dpi heddle for this yarn because it is very sticky and needs room to move.  I then decided to use a light weight crochet thread in a size 10 to do the weaving. I chose Aunt Lydias Classic Crochet Thread in a Burgundy color for the Weft Yarn. I also decided to use a this darker color so that the colors of the faux Ikat pattern would pop out...the color matched the darkest color in the warp yarn.   I didn't want to cover up the Ikat pattern with the weft yarn so beating lightly and leaving room between the weaving will allow the Ikat Pattern to be the focus.
