Looks a lot like rep weave, is it?

No, it's classic Acadian catalogne technique which is quite different fron rep weave but not totally un-related, I guess. They both produce thick & sturdy fabrics...

Notes

I have fond memories of cherished heirloom Catalogne & Boutonne' bed coverings in the linen closets of the family homestead in Canada.
When my life-long mentor Norman Kennedy offered a workshop on these techniques at Convergence in Atlanta in 1998, I jumped at the chance to learn more from this great master teacher & have been applying this time-honoured technique to woven placemats ever since… (Yes I know it’s supposed to be for floor/ bed coverings but I like to take traditional methods in different directions, & it makes for really nice placemats)
