I'm planning to make the 'Striped Hand Towels' from the book Favorite Scandinavian Projects to Weave by Tina Ingell (p73). These are hand towels appropriate for the bathroom. The draft is tabby background in plain weave cottolin with every third pick being pattern floats of thick cotton. It looks like the floats will make a plush, absorbent towel. I have a good handle on the cottolin - I have made many kitchen towels from it. But, the project calls for 2/2 cotton, 1600 m/kg (~800 ypp) for the pattern weft and notes 3 pattern and 6 tabby picks per cm. By my conversion, about 8 pattern and 15 tabby per inch. My question is what can I use for the 2/2 cotton pattern weft? I don't see this weight of yarn listed on the usual U.S./Canada weaving supply sites and I'm not sure what kind of knitting yarn this would translate to. I'm willing to sample but I haven't established a proper stash yet so I will have to buy yarns to sample with. What should I try/buy? As a new weaver I have gotten a ton of great advice from this site so I know some of you more experienced weavers can point me in the right direction. Thanks!

2/2 cotton is from Sweden. It is extremely soft. I suggest you double or triple a yarn that you like. If you want the 2/2 cotton, Glimakra USA can order it for you. Joanne

Thanks for the info.  I found a picture of it on the Borgs site and I can't recall seeing anything else similar.  It looks smooshy and soft and absorbent.  I'm guessing that this yarn is what really makes the towels, and that doubling something else won't be quite as good.  I'll be in touch!
