I am warping my Big sister loom for the first time and having a problem getting a full shed opening. I warped with 2 contrasting colors/strands of 20/2 warping thread at 9 epi to accomodate beading with the shedding device. I threaded the heddles on the top shedding device for the beads, alternating each thread so that the beads can lie within the shed and be locked in when changing the shed. The second shedding device below it is set up for yarns at 9 epi in which the above pairs from the beading shed go thru one heddle and alternate as usual for the yarn. First question is, In theory should this work or am I threading improperly for combining weaving beads with yarn that is slightly heavier?

The space between the upper and lower frame is 18". The shedding devices are set at 8" and 13" above the bottom frame bar. I will fiddle with the warp threads that are twisted but want to make sure that the way I have set up is not the  problem.

I look forward to combining different weight yarns - fine and medium, with tapestry beading and appreciate any advice.

Gratefully,

Mary

Hi Mary,

I cannot offer you any concrete help, I've never done anything like that.  But I thought I would reply to bump the thread so someone else will take over.  I find the folks here on weavo to be really helpful.  I do like the idea of beads in a woven item, and look fforward to seeing what you produce.

Queezle,

Thanks! I spent the afternoon untwisting warp threads and twining a bottom edge. It looks nice but did not help get that upper shedding device to show up as a shed opening in the weaving area. I know this can be done.

I looked at the instructions from Mirrix about warping with 2 shedding devices and the doubled threads are in the TOP device and the single threads are in the BOTTOM. Could this be the problem?

I think I have it the opposite. I need to find those instructions. Seems like when I looked, the beading and double shed info was separate. I will look again. Thanks!

Danteen,

You were right. The shed with the double threads is on top. Not sure how I navigated to the pdf but here it is for anyone else who needs this. http://www.mirrixlooms.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/doublesheddingdevice.pdf?utm_source=hs_automation&utm_medium=email&utm_content=14636008&_hsenc=p2ANqtz---wBcVeGvZ9kKVUXcYUgXNIoZ-pzV0LQ4_K75DBgfgovJZoN83QNauLAOf_JR_YfcgWawXTz6KahJ52u8p9i_sV--ywQ&_hsmi=14636008

Since bead weaving was covered in a separate tutorial, I will let you know how  this all works out with 2 shedding devices and 2 weights of yarn and tapestry beading:-)

Glad you got it straight.  I found those instructions on the Mirrix website.

Though sorry you will have to install heddles again.  I've used the Mirrix for tapestry and for beadweaving, but not for both at the same time.  Good luck.  Sounded like an interesting project.

I have the shedding devices set up correctly now...thank you! I have now woven a header 1 1/2" and find that the shed is quite narrow. I have checked the heddles for twisting/alignment and I also twined on the single threads 5 rows before weaving my header. Any suggestions? What is the largest space I should expect? Perhaps that is the way it is with double shedding devices.
